AT&T is selling SIM cards (for $5 after a $5 discount, with free shipping) without phones, for those among us who want to go a la carte on its GSM network with our own unlocked phones.

Everyone is saying that you need a two-year contract unless you pre-pay, but the checkout does not let you select a pre-paid option. And if you call instead of using the online site, you won't get the discount or free shipping.

It's nice that ATT is taking on all-comers, but that $5 SIM will cost you at least a grand over two years: if you're going to indenture yourself to a carrier, why not just take a free phone (with a removable SIM card in it)?
