Japan are known to be the land of the rising sun and also the land that uses future technology even before the western world get to know about it. These helmets are created to protect the citizens of Japan from their eternal nemesis: earthquakes. However, I don't think that it will surprise me to see bikers and hikers wear these on their ever endangered craniums. The helmet is flat and at the same time really very tough. It overcomes the most annoying limitation of most helmets. This one is easily collapsible (since it is flat) and doesn't really cause you problems as far as compactness is concerned.
