Well, here’s some great news that we’ve FOUND ants that can eat electronics, including your household computer, microwave, and anything with PCBs in it.

Why is this a good news?

Well, think of the electronics that cannot be recycled!  If we can control and colonize these electronic-eating ants and use them to destroy old electronics, we can prevent the lead parts from electronics going into the earth and wala, we have a solution to the biggest problem in the electronics industry, the crazy rasberry ants.

With most countries around the world going lead-free within the last couple years, having these electronic ants will only mean a “miracle” solution to a worldwide problem of disposing old electronics with lead.

It sounds like the plot of a farfetched science fiction movie. Unfortunately for the residents of Texas, it is very much a reality: billions of tiny reddish-brown ants have arrived onshore from a cargo ship and are hell-bent on eating anything electronic.

Computers, burglar alarm systems, gas and electricity meters, iPods, telephone exchanges – all are considered food by the flea-sized ants, for reasons that have left scientists baffled.

One of the commenters suggests trying a nerve stimulator needle, which is further insulated and only conductive on the tip (they’re for buzzing individual neurons and the like). This is getting kind of weird, folks. Soon we’re going to have a Existenz-style techno-biology freakout, shooting teeth out of a bonegun and stuff like that. Well, maybe not, but using medical technology like this is kind of freaky.

There’s a rumor currently making the rounds suggesting that Apple could release a multitouch keyboard for Apple TV. The Bluetooth keyboard, as the above mock-up shows, looks a lot like the company’s standard issue aluminum keyboard, but with an expanded area on the right side—the multitouch surface.

The multitouch pad would be totally programmable, and would be able to function as anything from a simple number pad to an iPod-like click wheel to a whatever-else-you-have-in-mind. That’s the rumor, at least.

The real surprise here is that people care enough about Apple TV to create sophisticated mock-ups.

At the moment, these cards have no way of functioning in OSX because there are no compatible drivers. That can be fixed quickly by Apple and Intel, and my guess is that a driver release is how we’ll find out whether the new MacBooks will have ‘em.

Scientists in Taiwan, China have developed a electroencephalogram signal-monitoring device that fits inside a baseball hat. Hence, absolutely hilarious headlines like “A baseball cap that reads your mind.” They went to the trouble to develop the kit in order to make it easier to study people’s reactions in various situations. For example, to study people’s driving behavior when drowsy. How it works:

The cap contains five embedded dry electrodes on the wearer’s forehead, and one electrode behind the left ear, that acquire EEG signals. Then, the EEG signals are wirelessly transmitted to a data receiver, where they are processed in real-time by a dual-core processor…. Next, the processed signals are transmitted back to the cap, where the data can be stored, displayed in real-time on a screen, or be used to trigger an audio warning, if necessary.

A tremendously exciting development, no doubt, but I do wonder how the 3G iPhone relates to all this.

Firefox 3 is now in the release candidate stage, with RC1 now available to download. The release notes can be found over at Mozilla, but the biggest new feature over FF2 (aside from the new default UI theme) is the address bar. It’s no longer simply an “address bar,” but has be re-christened the location bar. It searches URLs (including page titles) and bookmarks and “remembers” your most visited sites. So whenever I type “e” Wikipedia is the first site to pop up (for en.wikipedia.org). It absolutely will take getting used to, and I’ve read here and there that people hate it to no end, but I’ve grown to tolerate it.

If no other significant bugs are found, RC1 will become the final version, which is scheduled for a June release.
