Worms aren’t exactly positive stuff when it comes to the world of computing, but SanDisk has decided to name its latest SD card as the SD WORM card. The main reason behind the acronym? WORM stands for Write Once Read Many, and will target professional uses including police investigations, court testimony, electronic voting and other applications where it is imperative that data files must be protected from alteration or deletion at all costs. After all, it is much easier to modify analog recording media such as film and audio tape (which are going the way of the dodo by the way, if they haven’t yet done so already), leading to a rise in demand for a suitable solution where digital devices are concerned. Unfortunately, standard rewritable memory cards do not live up to legal requirements to prevent data tampering, hence the need for the SanDisk SD WORM card.

According to SanDisk, any digital data written to SanDisk SD WORM cards are effectively locked the moment it is recorded; leaving absolutely no physical way to alter or delete individual recorded files. Good thing you don’t need another card adapter to read this since any conventional SD memory card reader is able to do the job. SanDisk SD WORM cards also come with a 100-year archive life under appropriate storage conditions, of course. Some of the more interesting applications for the SanDisk SD WORM card include :-

Police photography and witness/suspect interviews, where courts require proof that photos and audio recordings are genuine

Court proceedings, such as trials and depositions

Electronic voting, where recorded votes must be tamper-proof

Cash registers which record transactions for tax collection purposes

Event recorders, such as security cameras and “black box” flight-data recorders

Medical devices which retain individual patient treatment data

Personal digital assistants (PDAs) and similar devices used by physicians and other health-care professionals to track patient interactions

SanDisk SD WORM cards are readily available in 128MB capacity, although it is widely expected that the paltry amount of storage space will be increased in due time.

Until now. A new site called iRoticNET.com offers a $9.95 subscription for absolutely unlimited porn direct from their site, featuring over 200 titles at launch next week on July 22. Our hands-on verdict? It's wankalicious.

Even over 3G and not Wi-Fi, the video quality was remarkably good for something you're watching streamed live. You can seek to any part of the movie using the default iPhone movie playback controls—just like the kind you see in any embedded Quicktime movie. Audio quality was good and the 200 movies gives you a fairly ample selection that will only grow as the site matures. For $9.95, it's a pretty damn good deal if you're a frequent traveler or if you need to hide your habit from your wife. "Favorites" support even helps you get to your preferred scenes as quickly as humanly possible.

In our opinion, it's probably the easiest way to get porn on your iPhone without loading it up in iTunes beforehand. A few weeks ago, we covered Creative’s latest Portable Media Player (PMP), the Zen X-Fi. Believe it or not, Creative has already rolled out another PMP with the Zen Krystal.

The Zen Krystal looks like the Zen Stone Plus with Display (a PMP which I highly recommend), but has a more rectangular look. It appears to only be available with 4GB worth of memory, which is enough for about 2,000 songs. Songs and other audio files are easily downloaded with the drag and drop function with no drivers to install.

In addition to its 10 hour battery life, the Zen Krystal has a lot of other nifty features like a voice recorder and a radio with 32 preset stations. It even has some nifty motion-sensitive games programmed on it like Hurdle Race, Catch & Dodge, and Dice Roll.

It appears that the Zen Krystal is targeted for the sports and fitness crowd. It has a pedometer built-in, which is a first for Creative. It allows you to track your calories burnt, and you can use the stopwatch for your workout with the included bundled wrist strap.

The Zen Krystal just appeared on Creative’s Hong Kong site, and so there is no real word as when it will become available or price.

In addition, the KS360 comes with touchscreen dialling, a 2MP camera and MicroSD card slot.

Jeremy Newing, head of LG mobile marketing, LG Electronics says, "We recognise that manufacturers need to develop a variety of handsets that cater for different segments of the market.

Everyone knows how gratifying a heartfelt scream can feel. But we all know how neighbors don’t like waking up to auditions for Tarzan. Enter the shouting vase, courtesy of Japan Trend Shop:

The vase supposedly uses some patented (or not) technology to convert screams into soft whispers. You scream into one end, and the silenced audio comes out the other. We can’t really believe that such an acoustic feat is possible, and like Popgadget writes, doesn’t part of the release involve hearing your scream echo throughout everywhere?

In this week's Wired Gadget Lab Podcast, Dylan Tweney, Daniel Dumas, and Jose Fermoso, talk about atomic watches, and no, these have nothing to do with bombs. They're especially interested in the automatic synchronization with atomic clocks around the world, as well as the other cool, high-tech features like shock resistance, solar re-charging, and altimeters.

In addition, they discuss the latest contender in the mini-notebook royal rumble, the HP 2133 Mini Notebook. They decide that along with its ample hard drive and sleek appearance, the best thing about it is its comfortable, full-sized keyboard.

Finally, they'll quickly go over the iPhone 3G's early launch-week problems, including a few buggy apps.

It's not that Electro Box's miShake PMP looks especially like anything else we've seen, but it sure takes an awful lot of cues from, shall we say, more popular brands. We won't even bother explaining the miShake name, but what is important to note is the 2.4-inch touchscreen, "explosive external loudspeaker," 4GB of internal memory, miniSD expansion slot and support for a multitude of audio / video file formats. Oh, and don't even bother fiddling through that questionable user interface to change tracks -- just give it a good jerk (you know, like Sony's Shake control) to hear the next jam begin abruptly. So much merriment for just £119.95 ($240).

[Via Pocket-lint]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

I'm not sure should we trust the image above or not, but apparently the upcoming low-end Sony Ericsson J132 will come with the standard 3.5 headphone jack. Maybe it's me, but I do want to believe the Swedish-Japanese company will finally opt for the logical way and join other handset makers which have been shipping phones with 3.5mm audio jack for years.

A month ago when it was announced, Sony Ericsson hasn't mentioned such a feature in the official release. It's good to see them going this way, and we can only hope they'll do the same thing with all of the upcoming Walkman phones. After all, it's only natural to sell music-centric phones with standard 3.5 headphone jack, don't you think?

Apple has introduced a new iPhone 3G dock to the Apple Store. Like the previous version, it features a scooped-out front section so you can reach the home button, and it has a couple of grill-covered audio conduits to route the sound from the speakers and enable speakerphone calls. Also, like the original model, there is no remote control support, so the $30 accessory is strictly for charging and syncing (and, of course, for holding the iPhone at a jaunty angle). The new dock will not work with your old first generation iPhone.

But, we ask, why bother? It's likely that, when the next iPhone is released, this dock will be as useless as its predecessor is now. Better, then, to just spring for the new $9 iPhone 3G insert for the Universal Dock, of which you probably have one or two lying around. Sure, you lose the speaker conduits, but you gain an infrared eye.

Interestingly, right now the Universal Dock is not listed as compatible with the iPhone 3G. That will surely be remedied soon enough. Worse is the fact that there is no plastic dock adapter in the box with the iPhone 3G. That really smacks of nickel and diming.

If you do opt to buy these model-specific docks, we suggest you keep the old and useless ones, along with your old iPhones, in the back of the closet. When you have kids, you'll be able to save money on those fit-the-plastic-shape-in-the-hole toys and just let the kids try to do the same thing with the iPhones.
