NEC demonstrated the use of its PaPeRo home robot as a human machine interface (HMI) for inputting information, such as the destination and purpose of an outing, into a car navigation system and other devices. According to NEC, the purpose of utilizing PaPeRo as an HMI is to improve user convenience through the use of a home robot equipped with voice recognition and camera functions, instead of using a touch panel or other devices, which are usually used to input information into a car navigation system. For example, when a user in house tells the robot that he is "going to Yokohama on a date," the robot recognizes that person's voice and uploads the information to the server via wireless LAN, etc. The server performs an arithmetical operation on the uploaded information in consideration of the dialogue history between the robot and the user, the knowledge information inputted to the robot, the season, the time, etc.

Then, information on the best route for the user to go to Yokohama on a date is calculated, and the result is sent to the user's car navigation system, etc and displayed on the screen. Therefore, the user only has to get in the car and talk to the robot to reach his destination by the best route. The demonstration was performed at AT International 2008, which runs from July 23 to 25, 2008, at Makuhari Messe in Chiba Prefecture, Japan.

One month and change after DP Review gave the Sigma DP1 a so-so review, David Pogue now offers his two cents. Like DP Review, Pogue likes the SLR-in-a-point-and-shoot’s body, but says it’s not the end-all, be-all for the concept.

The Sigma DP1, in case you don’t remember, essentially puts an SLR sensor inside a point-and-shoot’s body, to mixed results.

While Pogue admits that the camera is a technical marvel, it doesn’t deliver as well as we might like. The lens doesn’t zoom; it’s too slow for proper action shots; the RAW files don’t work with PhotoShop; there’s no viewfinder, and the LCD washes out easily; and there’s no lens cap, for Pete’s sake.

Best advice: tread lightly with this one.

The new Finepix Z20 digital camera from Fujitsu is so cool that it’d make social network lovers drool. Why? Because the company has built a social network community — based on Ning — for Z20 owners called ZSpotNow.com. On that site, people can join the currently-running Z20 logo design contest, video-making contest, or the pro skating competition. The site sounds good, but unfortunately, the camera itself only has Bluetooth connectivity, which means you still have to manually transfer the photos / videos to your PC and upload them to ZSpotNow. If only Z20 comes with built-in WiFI capability…

Other interesting feature is a single-push button for converting the movies into smaller size (works perfectly for your blog). Nice. But again, if only Z20 comes with built-in WiFI capability…

Voyager GPS camera. It is a really smart/interesting merge of different technologies. The GPS logs your location, accelerometer senses danger, video camera lets you playback upto 10 seconds before and 20 seconds after the event, and the SD card records all of this. It costs $450.

The idea is to protect yourself from unfair insurance claims and false accusations. We’re not sure how this would help if this is on your windshield as shown. More than likely it’ll record how you rear-ended some poor old lady with your SUV. We suggest you install it on your rear window :)

Anyhow. As far as specs you’ve got a 1.3MP CMOS camera with 30IPS 1280 x 960, Mpeg4 320 x 240 (QVGA) or 640 x 480 (VGA) recording ability, G-Sensor, emergency record button, and integrated GPS.

It comes with car charger, windshield mount, 1GB SD card, and the necessary software…via

“Power Vampires” take the shape of all kinds of things; your mobile phone charger, digital camera charger, iPod charger, my mother….these items steal energy from you even when not being used for their intended purpose, like making me a sandwich. To combat this massive amount of wasted energy, designer Paulo Oh has come up with a simple plan; unplug them. Not satisfied with simply unplugging them, he also designed this handy outlet called “Hang On Outlet”. It is a basic power outlet with a little extra lip to hold on to your lose plugs, keeping your power management neat and tidy.

Where did it emerge from? Well the FCC spotted it and it's our duty to mention it. The EM330 Motorola handset will be known as the Motorola Ischia in the future. Motorola seems not to be giving up their fight. They aren't doing that great in the mobile business lately but they keep sticking to it. More and more models are rolled over.

The Ischia is an entry level clamshell phone. Looking at the specs we see a VGA camera, support for microSD memoru cards, FM radio. Not exactly the smartphone here but the Ischia will definitely run applications like calendar, alarm, calculator and various Java Games.

The FCC has just approved the Motorola EM330 also called the Ischia. It’s an entry-level clamshell phone which reminds me of a toy phone model I got off of the corner store. Still, Motorola claims it’s a “music phone with a sleek design that’s sure to get attention.” Uhu, sure.

The Motorola Ischia is a tri-band GSM phone with EDGE and GPRS connectivity. Having no 3G in this era is a bit of a disadvantage, although it could be an unexpected hit in its target market which is China. Being a music-oriented phone, it has a music player, FM radio, 3.5mm jack for headphones, and dedicated music keys both on the inside and the outside of the flip device. Other features include a VGA camera with recording capability, Bluetooth and miniUSB connectivity, and a microSD card slot. Price and availability for the Motorola Ischia EM330 aren’t known yet, but I’m pretty sure you’re not holding your breath for them.
