We already got a decent enough look at Intel's new convertible Classmate PC when it made its debut at IDF yesterday, but if you're looking for a slightly more thorough examination of it, you may want to hit up Laptop Magazine, which got a chance to spend some time with the device and offer some initial impressions. As is even more apparent in these pics, the hardware is very much not finalized, with it sporting some mismatched parts and some components that may or may not make it into the final version. That said, they do seem fairly impressed by the laptop, with the built-in accelerometer working well, and the included "Quick Launcher" software shell making Windows XP considerably more accessible to students, and adults for that matter. Hit up the link below for the video hands-on and, of course, plenty more pics.

You could do all your computing on a lightweight MacBook Air, but a real manly man would use this computer that’s so beefy that it could smash your lightweight girly-man system into a fine pulp.

Hand-forged from steel by an honest to goodness blacksmith, Vulcanus is one bad mofo of a PC. Created by Czech builder Sergej, the Vulcanus will crush all other computers that stand in its way.

Inside and out, the PC is constructed from hammered steel parts that each probably weigh more than your measly little laptop.

I especially love the hand-hammered bolt details and oxidized metal finishes.

click to view this video clip

All told, the finished Vulcanus weighs in at over 110 pounds, or about 5 times the heft of your average full sized tower PC. The last time I remember a computer that weighed this much was the original Mac Portable.

Another new Centrino 2-based sub-laptop hits the Japan market. Coming from MSI, this one is called MSI PR201. It is powered by a 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 processor, an Intel GM45 Express chipset, and a 4GB of main memory. Sounds powerful, huh? But wait, to feed your connectivity hunger, the notebook is equipped with a Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, USB slot, and 802.11a/b/g/n WiFI. Last but not least, PR201 comes with a 250GB of HDD, a DVD Multi burner, an integrated 2 megapixel webcam module, a 12.1-inch (1280×800) display, and a HDMI out port.

Weighs 1.8kg, MSI PR201 laptop is retailed for around €1,000.

By Andrew Liszewski

It’s kind of hard to get excited about a landline phone these days, particularly when most of us are considering ditching them in favor of VOIP or strictly using a cellphone. But the OpenFrame platform designed by OpenPeak has enough eye candy to catch my attention. While many cellphone manufacturers are rushing to create handsets that emulate Apple’s iPhone OS, OpenPeak seems to be the only one trying to do the same thing for the home phone. The hardware, which consists of the ‘OpenFrame’ itself (the small tablet that looks like a digital picture frame) and a more traditional phone handset, will be manufactured by OpenPeak but made available to consumers through the telcoms with a price tag of about $200 to $300.

And like with the iPhone, the company will be encouraging developers to create third-party programs to complement the OpenFrame’s core set of applications like a calendar, local weather & news and even internet radio. While there’s no question the UI the company has demo’d looks slick, even I find it hard to justify such a device when I already get the same online services from the PC or laptop I sit behind all day. Not to mention the fact that I mostly only use my home phone for the uber-important task of buzzing the pizza delivery guy in.

Asus, the company who "invented" the small and ultra-cheap laptop has noticed that sales of 10.2" netbooks are off the charts so it is preparing a new offering for that segment. This time, it's not an Eee PC (this line has become more than confusing lately with one new model every week), but a new N-Series, which means that it will be more powerful, but also more expensive ($500-$650 range). But this new 10.2" laptop might also be a better choice than the Eee for users who want to use them as a simple, main computer: storage capacity will be as high as 320GB.

OpenPeak has unveiled the OpenFrame platform that hopes to bring a semblance of the iPhone OS to the home phone, an effort that is normally found on other cell phones without much success so far. The OpenFrame is a tiny tablet that resembles a digital picture frame, and will be accompanied by a traditional handset, where both are manufactured by OpenPeak and will be sold via telecommunications companies for $200 to $300. Developers are encouraged to come up with third-party programs including staples such as a calendar, local weather & news and Internet radio. Do you think the OpenFrame platform will catch on, considering similar online services are already available on the PC or laptop? I suppose it might be if the non-geek demographic were to pick it up.

I’m a HUGE Tokidoki fan, so I’m a little upset that Fujitsu is releasing a Tokidoki Lifebook U2010 only in Japan. Yes, dear readers, the company announced it on its blog, saying the FMV Loox is an eco-friendly, limited-edition computer that will be released exclusively in the Japanese market.

The pocket-sized mini-tablet, which packs an Intel Atom Z530 processor, a webcam, a 5.6-inch touchscreen display, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, a 60GB hard drive and sports Windows Vista, is launching next week August 29 in Japan so consumers can place their orders online. Pricing details haven’t been disclosed, but I’m betting it will be over $1,000 just like the U810.

Sadly, we don’t know if Fujitsu is planning to release a Tokidoki laptop in the U.S. but what we do know is that the U2010 is coming to the U.S. as the U820, so there is some hope.
