Pocket Informant is one of my most favorite PDA apps. I’ve been using it since version 2.x; and that takes me back to 2001…wow. I feel old. Anway, Alex bought himself an iPhone 3G, and has been busy recently. He’s pulled together a version of PI for the iPhone that is really kinda cool.

This is exactly the type of product that you may have once seen at an EPCOT exhibit or a future-looking tech documentary, but the difference is this is real. NetLinc is an INSTEON Central Controller that allows you to schedule and control your INSTEON home automation network from the Internet, via a browser on a PC, your Web-accessible smartphone or PDA.

The main NetLinc controller simply plugs into your existing INSTEON network, and from there, you can configure it with your computer network to grant you control from outside your home via your broadband Internet connection. NetLinc even support IP-based cameras so you can view those cameras in real-time from wherever.

This is super-cool application for your iPhone or iPod Touch. If you want to see NetLinc in action, take a look at this video.

I don’t use a Blackberry though I wonder how many BB owners use their device for more than just push email? I was surprised to see so many Medical titles for the Blackberry on Pocketgear. Many of the titles are from Skyscape which seems to be pushing support for multiple platforms as are many PDA vendors these days. I guess that’s the trend since there isn’t exactly a dominant platform these days. Good in that means there’s plenty of choice for we consumers but I guess that’s bad for developers!
If you are a Palm Treo or Centro user I don’t think we miss out on Push email. ChatterEmail for instance is an excellent Push email client for the Palm. Coupled with all the Palm medical software available I think we’re still ahead of the Blackberry users

I've been lucky enough to not do it myself, but I know what a pain it can be.

This Mobile Superhero software from YouGetItBack.com helps mitigate some of the pain caused by this. Install the software on your phone. If it is lost or stolen, the phone can be remotely locked from the website. You can also back up your phone contacts to their secure server.

If someone finds the phone, they can use the phone to report it lost or stolen. That's it. The phone is inaccessible. I did find that on a power cycle, the Nokia N95 I was testing with was briefly accessible until the security software activated. However, it's about as locked down as it gets.

Mobile Superhero can be downloaded for free and it supports a number of Blackberry, Nokia, and Samsung handsets. After the 30 day trial, it costs $19.95 a year. You can also opt for physical asset tags for $9.95 that are good for three years, but they do not protect the access to your phone. The tags can be used on any item, though.

The fact that it’s a Linux device should not put you off – it’s easy to use, configure and very intuitive.

As the name intimates, the N810’s primary function is web browsing and in this respect it’s pretty much on the money as far as mobile devices go. The Mozilla based browser is quite speedy with support for Flash, and the large 800 x 480 pixel screen allows web pages to be viewed in full without having to scroll around like you would on a PDA or phone. In this respect it is light years ahead.

As you would expect for an internet-enabled device, connectivity is excellent with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth v2.0 built in (no bluetooth stereo audio though). There is support for WEP and WPA-PSK encryption for secure wireless connections and setting up a connection to a hotspot or your home network is easy with the ability to have several configurations available. Equally simple is establishing a bluetooth connection to a 3G mobile phone for go-anywhere internet access. Rather surprisingly the N810 like the N800 seems to have an uncanny ability to hold onto a Wi-Fi signal for far longer and more reliably than any Windows pc I have ever used.

Out of the box there is no decent PIM application other than a rudimentary contacts manager, but to be fair Nokia makes no claims regarding PIM functionality.

As a media player the N810 is competent and possesses some excellent features such as an internet radio application and the ability to play media streamed from a server. The built-in media player is somewhat basic, but it does a reasonable job of things and there’s good support for a wide variety of audio and video formats including mp3, WAV, AAC, WMA, WMV, MPEG 1-2, mp4, avi etc.

Sound quality is good and on par with a decent mp3 player. Quality headphones enhance the experience further. Video playback is superb: smooth and sharp on the large screen making it much better than any mobile phone or PDA. Watching an entire movie is a reasonable proposition. Occasionally, playback can stumble on high resolution video files but transcoding to 400 x 288 pixels soon sorts that out and Nokia provides a free utility for optimising videos.

The email application is fairly basic, but allows multiple POP3 and IMAP4 mail accounts. I found that it does slow noticeably with large volumes of mail.

There is no sim slot and therefore the N810 can’t be used as a standalone mobile phone, nor can it access the online world without a hotspot or phone to hand. For some people this is a major omission. For me it isn’t an issue. With excellent Wi-Fi performance to rely upon free Skype-to-Skype calls were of decent audio quality with minimal lag.

Physically, the keyboard is what differentiates the N810 from the N800. It slides out smoothly from the bottom of the unit and locks into place. It adds a new dimension to the device that makes data entry less of a chore than it is on the N800. Writing mail, short notes and documents, and instant messaging becomes more realistic. However, you will struggle to touch type on it or write a lengthy document.

Nokia N810 in the open position

Inevitably, the addition of the keyboard has forced some compromises upon the o/s in terms of navigating the user interface and on occasions when I found myself using it, I was still forced to resort to the stylus. Getting a satellite lock was slow and the maps seemed to be quite low on detail compared to dedicated GPS units.

Nokia N810 closed position

Conclusion

Has the 810 moved things on and would I recommend one? Not much and almost is the answer.

You really have to want an internet tablet to be able to reconcile cost against performance and convenience. If you are looking for a laptop replacement and for something that can be used for regular web access then you are probably better off looking at a sub-notebook such as the Asus Eee PC which is much more capable and cheaper.

If you are like me and don’t like to be carrying several devices, then it’s tantalisingly close to achieving that nirvana as an all-in-one replacement for a PDA, mp3 player and mobile phone. This in itself is worth paying good money for.

Review by: Nigel

[Post tag(s): smartphone news, Pocket PC news, Tracy & Matt, Nokia, N810, Internet Tablet]

It is called the D-Link SecuriCam Pan/Tilt/Zoom Network Camera (DCS-5610) and pricing is around $770.

The D-Link SecuriCam Pan/Tilt/Zoom Network Camera (DCS-5610) is designed to let you pan and tilt with it so you can view a wider area. It is IP-based, offers an auto-start motion detector that can be configured to send an email alert when triggered and is capable of streaming live feeds to an Internet-ready mobile phone or PDA.

Features of the DCS-5610 include power over Ethernet support, video storage on a NAS device, digital/optical zoom and management via a Web-interface. It is available now.

For the gadget-equiped traveller, security has become a nightmare. While I was on vacation, I saw business travelers have to unpack a laptop, projector, cell-phone, PDA, MP3 player and all the required cables and place them into those gray tubs of doom. For those of you in a similar situation, the Transportation Safety Administration and MobileEdge are working together to relieve your pain. They have introduced TSA friendly laptop cases.

MobileEdge's ScanFast collection for laptops and other gadgets features a backpack, messenger bag, and briefcase that have been designed to be easily searched and X-Ray'd by TSA agents. The benefit here isn't just piece of mind that your gear and gadgets won't get lost, broken, or stolen, but the new gear bags should also serve to speed up security screening lines.

The bags, which are actually pretty attractive, are set to be released by the end of the summer. If you travel with gadgets, check out the bags. They might be just what you are looking for.

Source.

3 is launching a few new treats under their banner this winter, not least of all the hotly anticipated Sony Ericsson Xperia X1.

The Xperia family represents a new step for Sony Ericsson away from the S60 platform and into the world of more advanced browsing via Windows Mobile. The X1 is the first of the line and comes with a 3" WVGA touchscreen, stylus and slide-out QWERTY keyboard as well as Wi-Fi and USB connectivity.

Rather than a fully-fledged PDA, the X1 comes with a decent 3.2-megapixel camera and operates with easily selectable widgets, or "panels" as they call them, to navigate between your nine favourite functions without too much fuss. It's also very good for looking at pictures of penguins.

It's 3G with HSDPA - as all good handsets seem to be these days - and it'll be hitting the shelves in November along with a £30/month contract of thereabouts. If you like the idea of a smarter phone without too much of the added bewilderment, then the X1 could be the model for you.

source
