Looking to put those dust-collecting tools of yours to use here on Independence Day? Then we've excellent news, you introvert you. Rather than grilling up some red meat (or chicken, or tofu, whatever) and handling highly volatile explosives, we have no doubt that modder "darkeru" is spending his day playing with his brand new toy: a Nintendo Entertainment System... crammed within an NES cartridge. We'll be honest, this one does feel a little incestuous for some odd reason, but we greatly appreciate the ingenuity. Hit up the read link for more pics.

[Via MAKE]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Check out the World’s smallest fully functional bot known as the i-SOBOT. A compact hobby bipedal humanoid robot that is only 6.49 inches tall and weighs only 350g! (through the development of a proprietary compact servo motor, but who cares about that?) This tiny bot broke the Guinness World Record for being the smallest advanced humanoid robot.

The micro-sized high-tech i-SOBOT is equipped with 17 servo motors provided throughout the body and also a gyro sensor. It is capable of making different kinds of smooth motions while automatically balancing itself.

It features five operational modes: (1) remote control mode; (2) programmed mode; (3) special action mode; (4) voice control mode (for dictating simple actions); and (5) dance mode. It i-SOBOT IR Remote Controllercan also move while outputting words (speaking vocabulary of over 200 words and phrases in English), sound effects, music, etc. from a built-in speaker.

The i-SOBOT remote control has a built-in LCD display with intuitive icons for easy motion sequence entry. The controller/robot communication is done using a well known IR format similar to television remote controls. The i-SOBOT can play music, dance, and respond to applause and other user actions. The bot can also make its own punching and kicking sound effects, so we can imagine some entertaining robo-duels with a pair of these things. By the way, have you ever seen a toy robot that can do push-ups? Or get up on its feet by itself without you having to lift it up? Watch the video. It’s awesome!

The Tomy i-Sobot is available to buy online for $199.99.

While every major sport has caught on in the virtual world as a video game, the holistically competitive Sumo from Japan has remained sparse, if not absent altogether. If at all any Sumo video games have been developed, they have not made it to the limelight because of sheer difficult to capture the spirit of Sumo through the regular button input and vibration feedback. A potential improvement for Virtual Sumo is on the horizon, due to an innovative input and feedback systems that lets the virtual sumo warrior tap into the mental and emotional intensity involved in Sumo. The technology in this Sumo simulator is several eons ahead of the wood casing it it contained in. It features a hi-tech bio-feedback mechanism that is sophisticated enough to read the players’ emotions through electrical signals received from the finger tips. This ‘arcade’ machine may not be aimed at gamers, but even they must respect the coolness of the technology.

The strategy to this game is that one must remain as calm and collected as possible. This is a contrast to the need to get hyped in regular games. This difference makes this a perfect game for the gamer turned big-boy, so he can play in a more mature setting, where being relaxed is key to success. I expect this to catch on as an executive toy for the same reason. The bio-feedback technology used here is a leap towards a new direction of virtual activity, and those who can shell out the wads to purchase it will find it is a nice way to relax while having fun.

If you have a preschoolers and am not sure how to keep him/her entertained, how about these Interlocking sound cylinders? They’re each loaded with samples via software and can be combined in a stack to create a cacophony to drive you and your family mad or used individually. I wonder what are some of the other more practical uses, but with parents always looking out for the next big thing, the Interlocking sound cylinder would make for a pretty good toy.

Pigs are smart creatures. And mean. Some speculate that pigs in captivity can develop a poor disposition because they're bored, making Sharon Geschiere's "Wroezelaar," a play toy for swine, an essential accessory for an emotionally healthy abattoir environment.

Having been chased down by one-too-many 1,000-pound free-range sows on my uncle's farm, I'm not entirely convinced that pigs aren't genetically predisposed to orneriness. But since I also believe that the best thing we can do for livestock before slaughtering and eating their bodies is to give them a happy, healthy existence, I'm can't help but support piggy entertainment. Might I also suggest weekly showings of Babe and Charlotte's Web?

There's no denying that pig on the left looks super stoked. May he smile all the way to my plate.
