"Smart Lighting" is a concept being developed at the university of Boston. The idea is to use LED lights to not only brighten the room, but also to send data to various devices in the light's line of sight. LED lights can flicker (hence creating 0 and 1 necessary to transport digital data) fast enough to be imperceptible by human eyes. The research team working on this project believes that wireless speeds of 1Mbps to 10Mbps can be expected when they get it to work. There's probably no real demand for this on the computers front, but other non-connected devices could be made to be connected this way. Think of it as Infra-Red data transmission with added "LED cool". [via cellularnews]

As its name indicates, the LaCie 5big can receive up to five 3.5" drives to reach a total capacity of 7.5TB (5x1.5). It can be configured in seven different RAID modes, among them RAID5 and RAID6. Most people will use a half the capacity for redundancy (in case of a hardware failure on one of the drives). It is a network attached storage (NAS), but it also has a USB 2.0 and three eSATA ports (eSata is as fast as internal HDD). The 5big comes with an administrative interface that makes it possible to create user account accounts to manage "who can access what". It costs between $900 (2.5TB) and $1900 (7.5TB).

Just in case you thought that blogging was the domain of humans only, along comes Midori-san - a Sweetheart Hoya that is able to use a sophisticated botanical interface system to blog its thoughts for all and sundry to read, from the comfort of its bowl at Donburi Cafe, Kamakura. This new plant interface system is the brainchild of Satoshi Kuribayashi at the Keio University Hiroya Tanaka Laboratory, relying on surface potential sensors to read the weak bioelectric current flowing across the surface of the leaves. This natural current has been found out to fluctuate depending on the changes in the plant's immediate environment, ranging from temperature to humidity, vibration, electromagnetic waves and even nearby human activity. The algorithm coded will translate data into Japanese sentences that are then constructed into daily blog posts. Can't be too exciting to be a plant, IMHO, but it would definitely be adept at picking up office gossip on who's sleeping with who.

Willcom took the opportunity to roll out the Willcom 03 device at the recently concluded CEATEC 2008 in Japan, and this slide-n-tilt smartphone is powered by none other than Windows Mobile 6.1. Some of the other features on the delectable Willcom 03 include :-

3" display at 480 x 800 resolution

1-Seg support

Wi-Fi connectivity

Bluetooth 2.0 support

2 megapixel camera

microSD memory card slot

You will be able to get around 420 hours of standby time and 360 hours of talk time on a single charge - while I find the former figure realistic, the latter is clearly out of the question, perhaps they meant minutes? No word on whether this 50mm x 116mm x 17.9mm device will be hitting any country other than Japan or not.

I didn't know that Gucci actually made cell phones, but one look at this Made in China product is all the confirmation I need that this ain't no bona fide luxury handset from the fashion label but is a pure ripoff instead. The Gucci G800 dual SIM handset will come with Bluetooth connectivity, a built-in NES emulator and standard audio/video playback. Don't see any point or reason in getting this unless you want to be ridiculed by your friends and family alike when you whip it out to answer a call. Hideous!

If you think Wi-Fi connectivity is the next best thing since sliced bread, think again. The Boston University's College of Engineering is working on a new program under a National Science Foundation grant to develop next generation of wireless communications technology based on visible light in lieu of radio waves. Imagine being able to send data back and forth via low-power light emitting diodes (LEDs), essentially allowing you to communicate with your computer, iPhone, TV, radio and thermostat simply by flipping on the wall light switch the moment you step into a room. This development also eliminates the hassle of making modifications to your current home, and is not affected by electromagnetic interference at all.

Microsoft Surface's software developer kit is finally out, and will be made available to those attending Microsoft's Professional Developer Conference later this month. It would be interesting to see Microsoft slowly but surely opening up the Surface's development instead of restricting it to a selected group of companies only. Interestingly enough, multitouch will be part of the Windows 7 interface, so it would be nice to see how the SDK's release will affect the mobile operating system to go up against the iPhone's operating system.

Just when you thought Nikon made nothing but cameras, along comes the Media Port UP300x headphones that support multimedia playback on a single device, coming in a headset form factor. Sounds pretty futuristic, eh? Well, I've got news for you buddy - it looks far out as well. The Media Port UP300x comes with a built-in motion sensor that provides hands-free operation, while the videos watch are simulated in a manner as though you were sitting right smack in front of a 50" display. Other features include :-

8GB flash memory

Wi-Fi b/g connectivity

USB port

Supports WMV9, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MP3, AAC and WMA9 formats

Internet capable

I'm not sure how comfortable you'd be watching video using just a single eye, but it will definitely be the most realistic Borg attachment to date.

This is new - a gaming mouse from a non-traditional gaming peripheral company. The Silverstone Raven gaming mouse won't have the highest sensitivity around, but I still don't see the point of using anything higher than 3,200 DPI at this point in time (the Razer Lachesis can hit 4,000 DPI in case you're wondering), capable of switching down to just 400 DPI when the situation calls for it. Like most other dedicated gaming mice in the market, the Silverstone Raven is connected via USB and has on-the-fly DPI switching thanks to a rotating thumb button. It comes encased in a mixture of shiny black plastic and carbon fiber, boasting 11 programmable buttons in total. One the Raven itself lies a 128 x 32 resolution OLED display that shows the current DPI resolution.
