The computer industry is hurting in the current economic climate globally. Even the largest PC makers like Dell have had a hard time maintaining the levels of profit common before the global economic crisis. One of the ways Dell is luring consumers who are shopping for new notebooks to its doors is with more customization options.

Dell announced today that its Design Studio now has more than 100 different design options for customizing its Studio 15 and Studio 17 notebooks. The Design Studio allows shoppers to choose any of the artwork from the catalog and view the notebook from all angles before they order.

Among the design choices are the previously announced (PRODUCT)RED artworks and works from other artists including Mike Ming, Bruce Mau and more. Some of the works are images while some are colors. Each of the custom pieces adds $75 to the price of the notebook and if a (PRODUCT)RED design is chosen $20 is donated to The Global Fund.

Your business card has far reaching implications that you will never think about (for those who are still wet behind the ears, of course), and having the right design and information on a card could very well separate you from your competitors when potential customers make a purchasing decision. EDG, pronounced edge, is touted to be the first digital video player in the world meant for business use. When purchased in bulk, the price will retail fro $17.50 to $29.50 (depending on the quantity) that allows companies to showcase their “custom audio/video or slide show information where it can be viewed on the card’s 2″ high-resolution LCD color screen”. Content can be loaded or changed repeatedly simply by replacing the file via USB 2.0. Plugging it to a computer will also recharge the card’s battery, making this one useful business presentation tool that truly stands out in recent memory. Perfect for folks who want to use it in a variety of ways, including a code-compliant (pharmaceutical) education tool, a destination souvenir, a frequent flyer membership card, a trade show giveaway, a direct mail video brochure, a product manual, a language learning device, and much more.

The first thing you notice when you open the box is that the Epson Workforce 600 is a nice looking machine. The sleek looking printer will fit in with the decor of most offices or it might even improve the decor of your office space. The Epson Workforce 600 is a feature rich printer at a very affordable price ($199). It can Print / Copy / Scan / Photo / Fax plus it has WiFi . Consumers will find that the user interface on the Epson Workforce 600 is very user friendly thanks to the 2.5″ color LCD screen that tilts for easy viewing. I tested the printer on a Mac and on a Windows XP system and the workforce 600 came out shining like a star.

Print
The Printer is a pure speed demon without compromising any quality. Epson is trying to entice small business consumers that are looking into laser printers for the office and they will succeed based on speed, price and laser quality . Epson claims the Workforce 600 is twice as fast as their competition and I believe it. The print outs are not as fast as laser but pretty damn close. It can print out 27 ppm of text or 19 ppm of color. I asked my international panel of judges (aka. my family) to look at 2 documents, one printed on the Epson and another from HP LaserJet P3005 Printer and none of them could tell which document was the inkjet printer. Pictures came out perfect. It has built-in memory card slots for PC-free printing. You can even crop directly from the printer itself. Epson uses DuraBrite ink that is smudge, fade, water and highlighter resistant. The 4 printers cartridges are all individual and you have the option of using a standard ($12.35 for color, $17 for black) or high capacity ($17 for color, $20 for black ) for any of the colors and a extra high capacity cartridge for the black ($28.50). The paper is loaded from the back and no issues with any printer jams. Another plus for this printer, it uses up to 3x less power than a laser printer. One downside, the double sided printing feature is not available for the Mac (yet).

Scan
Scanning was the only minor hiccup I had with the testing of the printer. It gave me an error when a started the scanner, stating the scanner was not detected. I tried to scan again and it would work perfectly. It happened once on the Mac and twice in Windows XP. The OCR that comes with the unit (ABBYY Finereader5) is your average preloaded Optical Character Recognition software, it works but it doesn’t have any bells or whistles. If you plan on scanning and editing, I would recommend upgrading the software or searching for better software that will meet your specific needs.

With scanning you have 3 options : home, office or professional mode, each with a range of options to satisfy the user. I scanned images and documents with various outputs selected and they all looked great. I was really happy with image quality from scanned images. Having the power to scan directly to PDF is another nice feature.

Fax
Sending and receiving faxes is super easy thanks to the 2.5″ LCD screen. It can store 60 fax numbers on speed dial and it can receive up to 180 pages in memory.

Copy
You can copy in black and white or color and everything is straightforward due to the great user interface and the bright display. Just load the automatic document feeder, enter your settings, hit start and before you even turn around the copies are done.

WiFi
I remember years ago setting up my first printer to work wirelessly, it took a bit of skill and a lot of time to pull it off. Now with built in Wifi, it makes setting up the printer to work on your network wirelessly child’s play. Just follow the setup instructions on screen from the included setup disk and your wireless printer network will be up in running in minutes. You can also connect via Ethernet cable or USB.

Price:$199

For detailed specifications, click here

Pros

Simple to use and setup

Nice looking 2.5″ color display

Fast printing and laser quality print outs

Uses 3x less energy than a laser printer

Built-in memory card slots for PC-free printing

Cons

Scanning software is mediocre

No double sided printing on the Mac

Summary
The Epson Workforce 600 is a perfect addition to any small or med-sized office. During this economic downturn where every dollar counts, you will be hard pressed to find a better printer for $200 that does everything this sleek looking printer can do.

Skyhook Wireless' WiFi positioning technology has already found its way into quite a few previously position-less places, and it now looks like it's added one more feather its cap, with Awareness Technologies announcing that it has added the capability to its Laptop Cop laptop protection software. In addition to pinning down a location (supposedly with a "higher degree of accuracy than GPS"), the software will also let you remotely retrieve or delete files, among other tasks -- assuming it's a Windows laptop, that is. If that's not a problem, you can grab the software on its own now for $50, or get it pre-loaded on the Dell laptop of your choice. We're assuming existing Laptop Cop users will also be able to get an upgrade, although it's not clear if that's available just yet.

The Acekard 2i is the newest version of the popular flash cart, just the thing for storing save files, using Action Replay codes, and running backups and homebrews. So don't fret, kids -- by the time the handheld becomes available Stateside, you'll be able to make music, take pictures and tweet to your heart's content. Why else would you purchase a game system? Just make sure you check out the video of the cart in action after the break.

[Via DS Fanboy]
Continue reading Nintendo DSi gets its first flash cart, courtesy of Acekard

Nintendo DSi gets its first flash cart, courtesy of Acekard originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 02 Dec 2008 17:17:00 EST. From 5:28 p.m....

Several TV channels viewable by Orange County residents will conduct a 2-minute test tonight to help viewers check to see if they are prepared for the nation’s transition to digital TV.

From 5:28 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Channels 2, 4, 5, 7, 18, 28, 30, 50, 52 and 58 will stop broadcasting an analog signal to simulate what TV life will be like after the Feb. 17, 2009 digital changeover deadline. Channel 9 will conduct the test from 9:28 to 9:30 p.m. A list of TV stations nationwide who are participating is available HERE.

Viewers will see an on-screen message informing them whether they are ready for digital or not. If they aren’t ready, they will be directed to www.dtv.gov, the government’s information site, plus a phone number where live calls will be taken.

Consumers who fail the test will need to get their TVs ready for digital or else be stuck with a useless box. They can either buy a digital TV or a digital converter box, or pay for cable, satellite or Internet-based TV service. The cheapest way to convert is to buy a digital converter box, which averages between $40 to $70. You can get up to two $40 coupons for converter boxes from the government at dtv2009.com.

Again, TV channels participating in 5:28 to 5:30 p.m. test tonight are:

KNTV-TV (NBC, Channel 1)

KCET-TV (PBS, Channel 28)

KCBS-TV (CBS, Channel 2)

KTLA-TV (CW, Channel 5)

It was HP who made the PC "personal again," but don't think Dell isn't doing its darnedest to make it ultra-personal... again. After seeing a number of Dell laptops get unorthodox paint jobs and hearing that it would make Art House machines CTO in 2009, we've now learned that Dell has swung open the doors to its all new Design Studio. Naturally, said studio was built to customize the outfit's Studio 15 and Studio 17 lappies, and it features an interactive gallery of original artwork commissioned exclusively for this initiative. Available for browsing right now, each unique image costs $75 to have "permanently tattooed into the laptop lid," meaning that you better heart that design a whole lot before pulling the final trigger.

Dell opens doors on Design Studio for jazzing up Studio 15 / 17 laptops originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 02 Dec 2008 15:07:00 EST.
