Virgin Mobile had roled out a new Tarif for daily InterWeb surfing - it’s called the casual users tariff, and will be available for both contract and PAYG customers. The daily limit is 25MB, although it remains to be seen whether Virgin would enforce this.

As Tech Digest neatly point out, for those that are just checking Facebook or similar, this could be an ideal tariff - those going large on net access each day could probably find a better Tariff to put themselves on.

Virgin is also offering a new mobile portal to try and entice users online, after research they did showed that only 7% of users are accessing the Mobile Web (maybe it for reasons like this?)

Anyhoo, the new casual user tariff will be available from 8th December, after which you should be able to find a lot more info here.

This unique 32GB SSD brings together both eSATA and USB connectivity, making this one-of-a-kind where performance and universal compatibility are concerned. This dual-interfaced drive is capable of drawing juice from an eSATA port despite functioning as a USB flash drive. Apparently AO-Lab (the company behind this device) has touted top data transfer speeds (theoretical) of 75MB/s and 25MB/s for read and write capability, respectively. As for USB, you get pretty decent 24MB/s read and 16MB/s write readouts.

How much space do 400 hours¹ of digital video need? About 7-cubed inches if you get Western Digital’s new storage box with 4-terabytes of capacity.

Announced today from the Lake Forest hard drive company, the WD ShareSpace is also fast — with transfer speeds of up to one gigabit per second when connected to a gigabit-Ethernet network. Translation: It’ll take 37.6 seconds to transfer a loaded DVD to the drive (ideal conditions, of course).

The system stands out because of a few features: It has WD’s GreenPower, so it uses up to 33 percent less power than other systems.

And you can add up to four desktop hard drives so if the current storage fills up, just take out the full drive and slide a new one in. And when drives get larger, it will accept the bigger sizes.

However, Western Digital says that if you add a non-WD hard drive to the case, it won’t work. There are software issues, says the company.

Such drive enclosures aren’t new for the industry — D-Link and Netgear have offered one for years — but this is rare for a Western Digital Product.

Lots of details on WD ShareSpace features and specs HERE.

The 2 TB version is $699.99, the 4 TB is $999.99. Both are available but the 4 TB is sold out at Western Digital’s online store. It should be available next week.

1. From WD’s site: The DV format, regardless of its mode (miniDV, DVCAM, DVC-Pro) has a data rate of approximately 25mb/s (mega-bits per second). In storage terms, this translates to approximately 3.5MB/s (Megabytes per second) or 13GB/hr (Gigabytes per hour)

USB Stick Beer Bottle Opener

The amount of utilities being added to USB sticks these days is astounding, we are no longer happy with just having a simple USB memory stick that does one job, none of them are as useful as the USB Stick CO from Trekstor.

The Trekstor USB Stick CO has it’s very own built in beer bottle opener, as well as being able to open your favourite brew, it can transfer data at 25MB/S.

The best way to liven a party is the add some karaoke and watch your guests eyes light up. The iKaroke is an accessory for your iPod that sends the music from your iPod to your stereo without the lead vocals. This means that no matter what style of music you’re into, you will never again be confined to the old karaoke backing tracks of Abba. By simply pressing a button, the iKaraoke quietens the frequency which carries the vocals, leaving only the backing track for you to sing along to. Perfect for your next get together!

Who says that geeks don't know how to live the good life? TrekStor is offering a USB flash drive that comes with a bottle opener, allowing you to down a cold one after a long hard day at the office. Of course, you can also have some beer during your work time, but I don't think that your boss will be too happy about it. The TrekStor CO USB flash drive comes with read and write speeds of 25MB/s and 12MB/s, respectively, and will function on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux platforms. Depending on your budget (anywhere from 6.99 Euros to 49.99 Euros), you will be able to pick from TrekStor CO USB flash drives of 1GB to 16GB in size. They'll arrive this October, so start saving up!

Samsung has begun sampling low-density, higher-performance solid state drives (SSDs) that are only 30 percent of the size of 2.5-inch SSDs and highly cost-efficient to manufacture. With the introduction of these smaller, low-capacity SSDs, Samsung now offers an attractive replacement for existing hard drives used in low-cost PCs. Available in densities of 8GB, 16GB and 32GB, the new multi-level-cell SSDs will be mass produced beginning next month.

Press Release after the jump

The low-density Samsung SSDs use the same high-performance SATA II controller technology as that being used on Samsung’s just-introduced MLC-based 128GB SSD. Samsung’s new MLC-based SSD at 32GB capacity will read data (sequentially) at 90MB/s and write it (sequentially) at 70MB/s – performance levels much greater than low-density SSDs on the market today. The 16GB reads at 90MB/s and writes at 45MB/s, while the 8GB reads at 90MB/s and writes at 25MB/s.

Seoul, Korea – Aug. 27, 2008 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world leader in advanced semiconductor technology, announced today that it has begun sampling low-density, higher-performance solid state drives (SSDs) that are only 30 percent of the size of 2.5-inch SSDs and highly cost-efficient to manufacture. With the introduction of these smaller, low-capacity SSDs, Samsung now offers an attractive replacement for existing hard drives used in low-cost PCs. Available in densities of 8GB, 16GB and 32GB, the new multi-level-cell SSDs will be mass produced beginning next month.

“We’ve refined our manufacturing techniques and redesigned our low-density SSDs to get what the low-priced PC market is looking for in the way of improved cost, performance and availability,” said Jim Elliott, Vice President, Memory Marketing, Samsung Semiconductor, Inc.

Samsung incorporates four individual 16 gigabit (Gb) MLC NAND chips in its 8GB SSD, as well as four dual-die packages and four quad-die packages of 16Gb NAND for its 16GB and 32GB SSDs respectively. Furthermore, by including a 32MB DRAM as the buffer and four-channel system for the new low-density SSDs, these solutions are better suited for high-speed reading environments.

Samsung has expanded its SSD market offerings since it introduced its first SSD in 2006 in 16GB and 32GB capacities targeted at the Ultra Mobile PC market. This was followed by the announcement of the 64GB SSD in 2007, a 128GB SSD in 2008, and sampling of a 256GB SSD in the second half of 2008.

With increased sales of low-cost PCs and recent efforts by most major PC manufacturers to develop their own low-cost PC offerings, the market for lower density SSDs has been experiencing explosive growth. By unit sales, the low-density SSD market is expected to increase annually by 57% until 2011, with SSDs for low-priced PCs being the main driver of market demand.

The SATA II drives will be just 30% of the size of 2.5-inch SSDs, based on the same muti-level cell technology as the earlier 128GB devices, and will come in 8, 16 and 32GB versions. The 32GB version will even have pretty good access speeds: 90MBps to read data (sequentially) and 70MBps to write. Since the devices are "highly cost-efficient to manufacture" you should expect the pricing to be attractive—just the thing for your cheap netbook, perhaps—when they go in to mass production next month.
