Polimaster Gamma Radiation Indicator Watch is a watch that indicates how many damaging gamma rays a person is exposed to. The makers of the watch suggest that frequent fliers pick one up. In reality, the only people that are likely to fly enough to absorb problem levels of gamma radiation are airline staff and pilots; who have no real way of escaping it as an occupational hazard unless they quit their jobs.

In the event of a nuclear apocalypse, there might be a use for a gamma ray detecting watch, but barring that, I don’t see much use. If you are wearing one of these then it probably goes well with your tin foil hat.

With the Polimaster Wrist Gamma Indicator watch, you can be sure that the resident nerd will appreciate this gift since it not only boasts Swiss-made quartz clock movement (that’s secondary), it features the ability to monitor radiation levels of both the wearer and surrounding environment. Who knows, you could be living with an alien masquerading as your wife all this while without you realizing it. Would you fork out $370 for such a watch? I suppose if you’re living near a nuclear plant this would come in handy…

I guess President-elect Barack Obama must be the Messiah, since he's already creating miracles and he hasn't even been sworn in yet. Or it could just be that credit card loving Americans just don't know when to quit spending & charging.

Check this out:

NRF Survey Finds Black Friday Gets Holiday Season Off to Energetic Start
-- Great Bargains, Pent-Up Demand Drove Shoppers to Stores, Web

Though the holiday season is far from over, retailers across the country are breathing a collective sigh of relief after shoppers headed to stores and websites in droves over the weekend. According to the National Retail Federation's 2008 Black Friday Weekend survey, conducted by BIGresearch, more than 172 million shoppers visited stores and websites over Black Friday weekend, up from 147 million shoppers last year.*

Shoppers spent an average of $372.57 this weekend*, up 7.2 percent over last year's $347.55. Total spending reached an estimated $41.0 billion.

"Pent-up demand on electronics and clothing, plus unparalleled bargains on this season's hottest items helped drive shopping all weekend," said NRF President and CEO Tracy Mullin. "Holiday sales are not expected to continue at this brisk pace, but it is encouraging that Americans seem excited to go shopping again."

Friday was clearly the busiest day of the weekend with 73.6 million people hitting stores and websites for doorbuster sales. Though traffic did subside after Friday, retailers were also buoyed by two-day sales as 56.9 million people shopped on Saturday, up from 48.3 million last year, while another 26.2 million people planned to shop on Sunday. Thanksgiving Day also continues to increase in importance as the number of people who shopped on Thursday was up 48 percent over last year (16.2 million people vs. 10.9 million people).

Those who shopped on Friday lived by the adage that the early bird catches the worm. The survey found that 23.3 percent of shoppers were at stores by 5 a.m. while more than half (57.6%) were at stores by 9 a.m. Bargains appeared to be so good that people have more of a jumpstart on shopping.

According to the findings, Americans have completed slightly more shopping than they had one year ago (39.3% vs. 36.4%), indicating that traffic and sales over the next several weeks will moderate.

"Though retailers should be encouraged by strong traffic and sales over the weekend, consumers are still being cautious," said Phil Rist, Executive Vice President, Strategic Initiatives, BIGresearch. "Weekend shoppers indicated that they are still sticking to a budget and thinking carefully before making any holiday purchases."

Though retailers in all categories were featuring big bargains, a majority of shoppers visited discount stores for holiday deals. According to the survey, more than half (54.7%) of this weekend's shoppers visited discount stores. Nearly half (43.0%) shopped at a traditional department store, up 11.1 percent from 38.7 percent last year. About one-third of shoppers visited specialty stores like clothing or electronics stores (36.0%) and shopped online (34.0%).

As expected, many shoppers (50.9%) purchased clothing and accessories over the weekend while 39.0 percent bought books, DVDs, CDs and video games and 35.9 percent purchased consumer electronics. Toys were also big sellers, as 28.5 percent of shoppers bought a toy. Gift card purchasing dropped ten percent with 18.7 percent of shoppers purchasing a gift card over the weekend, down from 21.0 percent last year.

NRF continues to project that holiday sales will rise 2.2 percent this year to $470.4 billion.

About the Survey

The NRF 2008 Black Friday Weekend survey was designed to gauge consumer behavior and shopping trends related to the winter holidays. NRF defines the weekend as sales from Thursday, November 27 to Sunday, November 30. The survey, which polled 3,370 consumers, was conducted for NRF by BIGresearch from November 27-29, 2008. The consumer poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.7 percent.

BIGresearch is a consumer market intelligence firm that provides unique consumer insights that are gathered online utilizing very large sample sizes. BIGresearch's syndicated Consumer Intentions and Actions survey monitors the pulse of more than 8,000 consumers each month to empower its clients with unique insights for identifying opportunities in a fragmented and changing marketplace.

The National Retail Federation is the world's largest retail trade association, with membership that comprises all retail formats and channels of distribution including department, specialty, discount, catalog, Internet, independent stores, chain restaurants, drug stores and grocery stores as well as the industry's key trading partners of retail goods and services. NRF represents an industry with more than 1.6 million U.S. retail establishments, more than 24 million employees - about one in five American workers - and 2007 sales of $4.5 trillion. As the industry umbrella group, NRF also represents more than 100 state, national and international retail associations. www.nrf.com

Via NRF

Gamma rays. Gamma rays are awesome. They give you super powers. But what if you already have super powers, like I do? Heroes like me have to be careful not to get re-exposed to gamma radiation, since it might alter my spectacular ability to be marginally witty even at 2 in the morning. The Polimaster gamma indicator watch sits slickly on your wrist and monitors ambient radiation and dose rate, and will alert you if you’re about to melt into a little puddle. Good thing it’s waterproof, too.

Polimaster specifically recommends this watch for frequent fliers, since you get significantly more radiation exposure at altitude. For what it’s worth, you get significantly less than you would from an x-ray at the doctor’s, so if you’re trying to develop powers of your own, I’d recommend breaking into the nearest hospital as opposed to taking lots of plane flights. It would be cheaper, too, and you’ll need the extra cash, since the Polimaster PM1208 will cost you $370.

Don't want to turn into the Incredible Hulk? Well, perhaps Bruce Banner should have picked up the Polimaster Wrist Gamma Indicator if he knew what's good for him. This $370 watch is Swiss-made (as with all good watches should be) and comes with a quartz clock movement. It is able to monitor radiation levels of both the wearer and the surrounding environment, although by the time things get nasty you might be too late to make a break for it already.

Yet, perversely, despite the wretched economy and crushed consumer confidence, this Black Friday also appears to be the least OMFGtastic ever, making the real deals harder to tease out, so you don't know if standing for hours in the cold and losing the ability to produce offspring is really worth it. So just like last year, we've rounded up and sorted through all of the real deals for you, broken down by category and merchant.
We already caught a brief glimpse of Tomy's Zink printer-equipped Xiao digital camera earlier this month, but with the Friday release date now upon us, we finally have a few more details about the would-be Polaroid successor. That includes word of a price for both the camera (¥34,800, or just under $370), and the paper you'll need to actually print photos which, at ¥880 (or about $9) for 20 sheets, likely won't have you plastering your walls with the 2x3-inch shots, even though they do actually have adhesive backs. Interestingly, you can also use the camera to print photos from any IrDA-equipped cellphone, but unfortunately not via WiFi or Bluetooth, which would be a tad more welcome. If that's got you intrigued, you should have a slightly easier time picking one up when it launches internationally next spring, although by then it'll likely also be competing with Polaroid's own Zink-equipped camera.

Remember the Sonim XP1? It was dubbed the toughest phone in the world. But will the toughest still be the toughest if the predecessor claims to do a lot better? Meet the Sonim XP3 Enduro that claims to be the first “full submersible” GSM phone. And by “fully submersible,” I mean this little toughie is perfect for those who have a predilection of taking their mobile phones swimming.

According to source, the Sonim XP3 Enduro can withstand even more drops and shocks than even the tough original Sonim phone. And its keys – tested to be able to endure beyond 500,000 pushes. It can even operate under extreme temperature conditions as long it doesn’t go past the -20 degrees and +60 degrees Celsius marks. The battery is also replaced with a more powerful 1180 mAh battery and regarding the software itself; the phonebook can now be synchronized with MS Outlook. All the upgrade in toughness does come with a (small) price though – from a thickness of 22mm, the phone is now 24.6 mm thick. The Sonim XP3 Enduro is first available in Sweden, the Netherlands , Germany, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Australia this November for US$370. The rest of the world gets it by the first and second quarters of 2009.
