The Goverment-backed NDS scheme is to get broadband to the 10% of the population that can’t get Internet services i.e. those in remote rural areas. Whilst the contract should be sorted out in the next couple of weeks, rollout may actually complete sometime in 2010, or even 2011.

It’s a good win for 3 Ireland, and even more than that, a great intiative by the Irish government - those who are geographically marginalised shouldn’t be marginalised in terms of access to key services these days. So it’s smiles all-round I guess. Apart from those bidders that didn’t win the contract. They probably aren’t smiling.

Here is the list:

Cozy Feet Microwavable Foot Warmers

Cozy up and cozy in. Your feet are two of the most useful, if sometimes unsightly, appendages you own. Should they freeze, your ability to stand, walk, run, and kick will be severely inhibited. Solution: Cozy Feet.

Features:

With proper care they’ll continue defrosting toes for years

Can be reheated thousands of times

Cozy Boots can also be frozen to treat sprains, bruising and swelling.

One size fits all.

Not suitable for use by Diabetics

Colours may vary.

Coin Sorter

Put yourself and your money at the centre of your universe. Carefully empty the contents of your piggy bank into the Coin Sorter funnel. The Motorised Coin Sorter will swiftly start work organising all your loose change into neat little tubes of £2, £1, 50p, 20p, 10p, 5p, 2p, and 1p.

Amphibious R/C Tank

Transforming from powerful, road-going tank to impressive ocean-going assault boat in the merest blink, this cunning device takes 4WD R/C (that’s 4-wheel-drive remote control) to a new level, loosing-off whole squadrons of BB bullets at your command.

Sturdy and imposing on land, with full 4-wheel drive capability to tackle the most arduous of, err, rockeries, this changeling of a device is equally at home in the briny. On activating the transformation device deep in the heart of the unit, powerful twin propellers take over from wheels, providing rock-solid forward motion in the water.

Features:

6 channel radio control

Control distance 30-40m

4 wheel drive on land, twin propellers in water

360 degree spinning ability

Ability to carry 4 standard drink cans

Propulsions 4-Wheel-Drive on land, Twin Propellers in water

Air Hogs R/C Zero Gravity Micro - Black

This 1/43 scale Radio Controlled car has modern sports styling, full function IR control and superior manoeuvrability. And to fuel your competitive streak there are two styles of car with different frequencies for head-to-head racing action. The cars can run for a spiffing 10 minutes run time per 30 mins charge and even have working headlights for night time cruising.

Set includes 1 car, 1 rechargeable Lipo battery and handset.

Features:

Race on the ground, walls and ceiling

Modern styling

Cars run for 10 mins per 30 minute charge

Working headlight!

i-Bird

Ready to fly straight from the box, the i-Bird is easy and rather joyous to control. With flapping wings, complete manoeuvrability, a stabilising tail and glowing eyes to boot, they’re a dream to zoom indoors. Or take your i-Bird outside and have it befriend the local bird population. And don’t be fooled by its innocent looks - this radio controlled bird is ultra tough and designed to survive all mannerisms of hard landings and collisions.

Features:

Super wide infra red control.

Mimics bird flight.

Recharges through its transmitter.

Colours may vary.

Considering the fact that Elon Musk, mildly successful space invader and the owner of the company, had admitted just a few weeks ago that the company only had about $9m in bank, this new investment probably means the difference between customers getting their cars on time and Tesla, well, dissolving.
The British police force will soon be equipped with handheld fingerprint readers thanks to the Mobile Identification At Scene (Midas) project that enables your friendly, everyday policeman to capture a fingerprint on his rounds to identify that person in a snap. This project has cost anywhere from £30m to £40m to date, and while it might help them solve cases or identify criminals in an easier and speedy manner, there is the nagging question of the invasion of privacy on ordinary citizens. After all, isn't the price of freedom eternal vigilance?

Microsoft's been touting its "fastest annual revenue growth since 1999," which resulted in a princely $60.42 billion dollars in its last fiscal year, but the number that has us rapt? Vista licenses sold since launch about 18 months ago: 180m. Damn, not too shabby a clip -- especially considering that they moved 20m licenses moved in month one, 40m licenses moved after the first 100 days, and 140m licenses by last April. But at roughly 10m licenses per month, that means Vista's still a couple years out before it surpasses XP, and with a bit of luck, by then we'll have already moved on to Windows 7.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

London Heathrow airport's latest building, Terminal 5, launched last month after almost two decades of planning, $8.5 billion dollars in cost, and 100 million hours in manpower. It is a glass and concrete and steel marvel, the largest free standing building in the UK, with over 10 miles in suitcase moving belts, and was supposed to be a cure for the Airport's famous congestion by way of massive automation. On its opening day, and it just did not work right. This week, British Airways' plans to move its long haul operations from the crowded main terminal to the new terminal were pushed back til June. Much of the press was quick to say that tech was the source of the failings in parking, luggage handling and check in, but here are the details I can find on what exactly caused endless lines and delay for so many passengers of Terminal 5.

Parking
Road signs pointing to garages were said to be misleading, and some signs inside the garages were inaccurate. Furthermore, there were complaints about problems paying for parking and exiting the structures.
Check In
On day one, check in counters were not open at 4am, meaning some ticketholders had to start lining up, causing a backlog that certainly didn't help the launch. By noon, 20 flights had been canceled because of baggage handling problems.

Baggage
Here's the heart of the issue at Terminal 5's launch. The luggage system was designed to be streamlined as a checkpoint for travelers, on the way to the plane.

BAA also enthuses about technology like the baggage drop, which hoists suitcases to an underfloor belt, enabling passengers to walk forward to departures rather than turning around. "It's on the way, not in the way," quips Ms. Kearney.

The 10 miles of belts are capable of handling 12,000 items of luggage in an hour. But on day one, workers, presumably understaffed, were unable to clear incoming luggage fast enough, causing +2 hour delays at baggage claim. On the other side of things, the system reported to handlers that flights that were awaiting luggage had already left. Instead of loading suitcases on planes, they took them back to the terminal for the next flight. So, a few planes took off with empty cargo holds.

Exaggerating all of this, the belt system jammed at one point. Sometime on day one, the airlines had no choice but to only check in those without baggage.

To add insult to injury, the Terminal 5 system has also lost the luggage of a passenger who died traveling back from Hong Kong, who is a son of an ex British Airways employee. He said, "To lose the luggage of a dead person is unforgivable."

In the end, British Airways has claimed responsibility for 15,000 bags were stranded at Heathrow. There is speculation that this number may have been has high as 20,000.

Flight Control
Not much went wrong here. Thank god. Last I checked, there were weather related delays, but that's not something you can plan to avoid. But the problems with check ins, resulting from lines and baggage problems, did result in 34 flights being canceled on day one.

Security
"Twenty security lanes promise speedier passage, though domestic travelers will now be fingerprinted."
Since people couldn't get through check in and baggage handling issues, security was probably not taxed.

Testing

Being nerds, you'd be right to suspect that all of this could have been caught by beta testing. Thorough runs of all systems, from the "toilets to check in and seating" took place over 6 months before opening, including 4 full scale runs, using 16,000 volunteers from September 2007 to March 2008. That leaves not much time at all to deal with major issues, since it launched that month.

In truth, they'll get this stuff ironed out. Eventually.
