Verizon is the best cell phone company out there, with T-Mobile a close second. Who says so? The majority of 51,700 readers surveyed in September by Consumer Reports, one of the most consistently consumer-centric organizations in the nation.

In a new report, available in the January 2009 issue, cell phone companies are no longer considered unreliable as 60 percent of readers said they were “completely satisfied” or “very satisfied” with their cellular service — a category that had previously been among the worst rated by consumers. About 42 percent said they had no major complaints with their cell-phone company, which is up from 29 percent in CR’s previous survey.

However, in Orange County (Los Angeles area), the ratings for all the companies aren’t that great overall:

Locally, Verizon still ranks at the top among readers and connectivity. And while T-Mobile is the worst for connectivity, readers ranked it the second highest. In reader ratings, all scored above 60, which CR defines as “fairly well satisfied.”

——————————–

——————————–

Overall, the industry scored such high praise thanks to some big changes, such as improving call quality and having less onerous contract terms. Pretty much all offer pro-rated contracts now.

But still, the big complaint was cost.

The free phone, or deeply discounted one, also may not be such a big bargain. Companies manage to make quite a bit of money back on the monthly fees. For example, about $4.50 of a Sprint subscriber’s monthly bill in 2007 was devoted to repaying Sprint back for the phone — a detail CR unearthed in Sprint’s U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission filings. Over two years, that’s $108.

Worse, even after the phone is paid off, the monthly bill doesn’t decrease. Hence, “consumers continue paying for the phone as long as they hold onto it,” says CR.

(Other CR findings: $2.55 of Alltel’s monthly bill was for equipment while T-Mobile charged $3.29. AT&T and Verizon bury their figures, but both companies told CR their fee was similar to the $5/month reduction of their early termination fees.)

As for the best quality service? Verizon hands down. It not only won the hearts of its subscribers but it also won a case against AT&T for better service. CR says AT&T no longer runs two of its “More bars in more places” ads depicting better service indoors, after Verizon cried foul.

It’s a good report (the online version ranks phones, the print version includes service) that comes one week before I publish my own series of cell-phone stories. I’m researching the costs of family plans, pre-paid plans and who has the cheapest cell phone service period. Stay tuned for all that next week. In the meantime, feel free to e-mail me or comment below with any questions or concerns about cell phone services and prices.

The soap opera of would-be Mac cloner Psystar was already full of shady twists and turns, but there's a possibility Apple's legal team thinks there's some truth to a few of the wilder conspiracy theories out there -- a paragraph tacked on to an amended version of the complaint filed in California says that Apple believes people or corporations "other than Psystar are involved in Psystar's unlawful and improper activities." That could mean just about anything, of course -- we've always thought Psystar was being a little too cocky, and no one's ever figured out how a fledging company that couldn't even hold on to a credit card processor could retain such a hotshot law firm -- but chances are Apple's just covering its ass in case it wants to sue the major investors of Psystar individually or even the OSx86 hackers that unwillingly enabled the company's dubious business. Either way, with all of Psystar's antitrust counterclaims dismissed and Apple adding new DMCA claims to its lawsuit, we've got a feeling things are about to go boom in Florida pretty soon -- if machines really are still shipping, this is probably your last chance to grab a piece of (semi-functional) history.

[Via Daring Fireball]

Apple amends Psystar complaint, says someone's behind the curtain originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 03 Dec 2008 11:42:00 EST.
Designed to fit in the palm of your hand, the Bushnell 2.5 x 42 Night Vision Monocular features a built-in dual-power infrared illuminator that works in total darkness and low-light conditions. In total darkness, the monocular sends out an imperceptible ambient infrared beam that allows you to observe objects with no other light source. The low-beam intensity can be used when partial light is available.
Offering outstanding viewing clarity and versatility, the 2.5 x 42 monocular allows you to see in the dark without being seen and alerting others to your presence as with a flashlight. Ideal for hunting, scouting games, and security and surveillance, the monocular is lightweight and easy to hold with its included hand strap. The monocular is also equipped with a tripod mount. With a viewing range of four to 600 feet and a field of view of 79 feet at 1,000 yards, the monocular has plenty of power to illuminate the night. The monocular is water resistant and comes with a two-year manufacturer's warranty.

Uses:
Scouting games
Security and surveillance
Camping
Cave exploring
Nighttime navigation
Night fishing and boating
Wildlife observation
Hunting
Search and rescue

Specifications:
Magnification lens: 2.5 x 42
Viewing range: Four to 600 feet
Field of view: 79 feet at 1,000 yards
Built-in dual-power infrared illuminator
Water resistant
Includes hand strap
Includes tripod mount
Dimensions: 6.7 x 3.7 x 2.7 inches
Weight: 14 ounces
Battery: Two AA

My opinion goes against conventional wisdom that Blu-ray won't succeed, and that streaming HD using Roku/Netflix, and cable providers offering HD content is now closing the window of opportunity for Blu-ray. I'm not buying that theory. Additionally, several other articles, including CRN's Consumers Not Planning a Blu-Ray Christmas article and Register Hardware's 'A Blu-ray Christmas? Don't bank on it' don't believe my opinion that it will be a Blu-ray Christmas.

The most popular products on Black Friday - specifically look at #3, the Blu-ray player:

Nintendo Wii Console

Ugg Australia 'Classic Short' Boot (how about that!)

Sony BDP-S350 1080p Blu-Ray Disc Player

Samsung LN52A650 52" LCD TV

Nintendo Wii Fit

Panasonic TH-42PX80U 42" Plasma TV

Sennheiser HD 555 Headphones

Canon EOS Rebel XSi Black SLR Digital Camera Kit

Acer Aspire One AOA110-1295 Notebook

Canon PowerShot A590 IS Black Digital Camera

Out of all the possible gadgets in the world, a Blu-ray player ranks #3.

Also, as previously blogged, here are the Top 10 categories and percent growth over Black Friday 2007. Once again look at #3, which sports a 147% increase!

Women's Boots - 203%

Watches - 202%

Blu-ray/HD-DVD Players - 147%

Women's Sleep & Lounge Wear - 415%

Games & Puzzles - 151%

Women's Jackets - 110%

Music - 96%

Headphones - 103%

Women's Dresses - 107%

Women's Casual Shoes - 143%

As I mentioned yesterday, I'm l keeping my eye on Amazon for any Blu-ray specials. (see: Amazon Blu-ray player special prices).
Apple has just announced that -- in addition to shipping all new computers with the Mini DisplayPort -- they're offering no-fee licenses to companies that develop products utilizing the connection, hoping to create a de facto standard. Of course, the VESA-approved DisplayPort hasn't been widely adopted, so it remains to be seen whether its miniature sibling will ever take off. At any rate, it looks like the company might have learned a thing or two back in the day, when FireWire's steep licensing fees slowed its progress as a serious contender to USB. You hear that, hardware developers? You can be part of Apple's latest obscure connector revolution -- for absolutely nothing.

[Via Ars Technica]

Some experts are skeptical about whether consumers will buy Blu-ray DVD players this Christmas - I am not one of them. Many are saying it's going to be a "blue" Blu-ray Christmas. I disagree. I went shopping for a cheap Blu-ray DVD player on Black Friday, with one bargain special at Wal-Mart offering a $128 Blu-ray player. This was one of the biggest deals offered by Wal-Mart on Black Friday, and one was to wonder if this deal was part of the draw for the raucous crowd that stampeded and killed a Wal-Mart employee.

When I went to one Wal-Mart, then told me they sold out in 2 hours. I tried another one and they told me I just missed the last unit by less than an hour.

Wal-Mart was offering the Magnavox NB500MG9 Blu-ray Disc Player, a mid-range Blu-ray player. Today (Cyber Monday), that same Blu Ray player is going for $199 online.

Features of the Magnavox NB500MG9 Blu-ray player include Full-HD 1080 output (24 or 60p), 1080p DVD upconversion, Composite video output Component video output, Progressive scan video output for HDTVs, HDMI with audio output for Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound, Digital audio output (coaxial), Analog audio output (left and right), CD support, Jpeg photo viewer, screen saver and surround sound effects. However, the Magnavox NB500MG9 Blu-ray player only supports Blu-ray profile 1.1 and not the current Blu-ray 2.0 version. Thus, no BD-Live support for access to more special content via the Internet. Still, this was a bargain Blu-ray player coming closest to breaking the $100 barrier. I planned on giving it to my brother-in-law for Christmas since he was looking at upgrading to a 42" HDTV flat screen.

If the two Wal-Marts I visited are any indication that this will be a "Blu-ray Christmas", then retailers that sell Blu-ray players and Blu-ray discs should be very happy. In fact, I'm surprised with retailers haven't offered a $99 Blu-ray player for sale. Yes, they'd be taking a loss, but perhaps they could offer it as part of a bundle, such as buy 5 Blu-ray movies at $24.99 and get a $99 Blu-ray DVD player plus a coupon for 50% off your next Blu-ray purchase. They'll entice them to come back and purchase more Blu-ray titles, which should more than offset any profits lost on the low-priced Blu-ray player. Once they get consumers hooked on Blu-ray, they'll be paying nearly double what regular DVDs cost.

Retailers need a shot in the arm and one way of doing that is by getting a Blu-ray player in as many homes as possible and as quickly as possible - before HD-on-demand starts to take off. Personally, I prefer to own my movies rather than rent/PPV/video-on-demand. I like to build my movie library so I can watch any of my 500+ movies anytime I want without paying another dime. I think consumers are looking to escape today's harsh economic climate. Watching movies is a heck of a lot cheaper than going to the movies. People are going out a lot less, eating out less, but they still want some form of escapism and quality entertainment. For that reason, I think it's going to be a very "black" Blu-ray Christmas. I have a Blu-ray player on my Christmas wish-list. Crossing fingers Santa Claus thinks I've been good this year.

Also, since today is Cyber Monday, I'm keeping my eye on Amazon for any Blu-ray specials (see: Amazon Blu-ray player special prices). You should as well.

But let me tell you, it's neither one. In fact, it's pretty easy once you have the business tool these big-profit marketers have. And Michael Rasmussen's new "Get More Buyers" video course shows you how to get it.

Get More Buyers is a course about building your online business by building email mailing lists filled with buyers rather than freebie-seeking, unresponsive subscribers.

Here is Introduction:

This introduction lays the groundwork for the video, explaining why the “the money is in the list of BUYERS” not just in having a massive list of potential customers. The Get More Buyers video course will work not only for people selling their own products, but for affiliate marketers as well. With an emphasis on planning, thinking long-term, he clears up existing myths and provides a clear plan to learn new strategies, and fix old mistakes.

Strategy 1: Low-Cost Products (Length 6 Minutes, 49 seconds)

Michael Rasmussen explains the idea of further of creating your marketing funnel. Key concepts are selling an inexpensive product, offering 100% commissions, and quickly building a list of buyers at a price point that will make it an impulse buy for many.

Strategy Two: Run a WSO (Length 6 minutes, 34 seconds)

Explains how to create special offers for other marketers and joint venture partners to sell your OWN products. Key concept: Private Label Rights, Compelling Sales Offers, Customer Service

Strategy Three: Price Increase Sales (Length 4 minutes, and 14 seconds)

This section of the video describes how to create demand for your product through the threat of price increases, initially offering your product at a low price point and raising it as you go. Different triggers such as time and number of sales, identify the different types of sales. Key concepts: Fire Sales, Dime Sales, Nickel Sales

Strategy Four: Upsells and One Time Offers (Length 5:42)

Shows how you can expand your profits when you are offering something free as well. This chapter has some great real-life examples that teach the concepts very well. I found this chapter very informative and easy to understand. Key Concepts: Upsells, Increasing Buyers Through Compelling Offers, Impulse Buys

Strategy Five: Affiliate Promotion Bonuses (Length 4 minutes, 53 seconds)

Offer bonuses that are complementary to the product you are promoting. This will entice people to buy your product, and you can add them to your list of buyers. Key concepts: Offer Bonuses When You Promote, Builds on Previous Strategies,

Strategy Six: Thank You Page Promotions (Length 4 minutes, 49 seconds)

The topic covers how to promote yourself on another products Thank You Page, and tells the steps you need to take to do it, and how to pitch your promotion to your partner, and how to increase the sales of BOTH of your products. This is another great chapter, one of my favorites in the course, and has a lot of original examples and creative ideas. Key concepts: Promotions, Commissions, Partnerships, Back-end.

Strategy Seven: Contribute To an OTO (Length 6 minutes, 55 seconds)

Chapeter 7 shows you how to include your product in somebody elses one-time offer and why this is such a great idea that is easy to sell someone on. Explains the three levels of customers that you will run into for this strategy, and how to find the prospects for this type of offer. Key Conecpts: Niche forums, developing relationships with others like you.

Strategy Eight: Contribute to a Product (Length 4 minutes, 44 seconds)

This strategy focuses on how you find potential partners to include your product in their product. It shows how you can add value to someones existing product, and grow your list of buyers at the same time. It also helps you develop a list of contacts for future deals. Usually these types of deals are win/win so they are easy to sell. Key Concepts: Ideas for enhancing your partners products to help sell your own.

Strategy Nine: Holiday Promos (Length 3 minutes, 18 seconds)

Explains how to get involved in some of the big holiday promotions. Using this strategy, you can offer a free item in someone elese promotion, as well as a one time offer. This way you can build your list of buyers, as well as earn commisions for the products you sell! Key concepts: Explains why these are not bad to get involved in, contrary to popular opinions.

Strategy Ten: Cross Promotion (Length 2 minutes 29 seconds)

Shows variations on existing strategies for cross promotion. This is another win/win scenario for both people involved in this type of promotiom because bothe partners build their buyer lists with new buyers that neither previously had!.

Final Analysis:

Michael Rasmussen’s Get More Buyers is a great value at his initial offering price! If you have read this review then you understand that one the concepts of this sytstem is incremental price increases. Michael Rasmussen stands by this principle and always practices in his releases. Get in on this before the price goes up. The three componets of this course serve a unique purpose, and together they form the most comprehensive course on this subject available today. For more information, read this review of the 144 page Battle Plan here. There is a great wealth of information in this product and if you only implement one or two of them you will indeed build a massive list of BUYERS!

Get Michael Rasmussen’s Get More Buyers Here!

Adding to the already impressive pile of Vista-deflating features we're expecting to see in Windows 7 is WARP, a tech which will allow your PC's CPU to act as a graphics accelerator, possibly doing away with the need for integrated graphics hardware to render user interfaces and low-end games. Not-so-seductively described as a ‘fully conformant software rasterizer’, WARP requires nothing more than an 800MHz processor for complete—if comically slow—DX10 compliance.

At this stage WARP won't be intended as a gameworthy replacement for dedicated graphics cards, but it could help avoid another "Vista Capable" type debacle by standardizing essential graphics capabilities across virtually all hardware. That said, it's not that slow: Microsoft reports that when paired with the rather awesome i7, it runs Crysis faster than Intel's integrated DX10 solutions. Like, 42% faster. Granted, that's still only 7.36FPS on the game's lowest settings, but don't miss the point here: Windows 7 will run Crysis—or any other game—without a video card.
