Nikon today introduced its new top-of-the-range D-SLR, the D3X. Building on the reliability, handling and durability of the award-winning D3, the D3X offers an imaging sensor with far higher resolution than its counterpart, breaking new ground in imaging quality. The all-new 24.5MP CMOS sensor makes the new camera eminently suitable for the broadest range of shooting situations, both in the studio and on location, and will be especially appreciated by uncompromising photographers in nature photography, studio work and fashion. The Nikon D3X shares the same ergonomics and handling as the D3, which have been designed to enable anyone to get to work quickly and efficiently. The bright, uncluttered viewfinder features 100% coverage and comprehensive illuminated displays, while the high-definition, 3-inch, 920,000-dot VGA TFT monitor enables outstanding playback quality for on-the-spot image assessment.

The Nikon D3X boasts a specially-developed FX-format CMOS image sensor with 12-channel readout, gapless micro lens array and on-chip noise reduction. It delivers class-leading levels of continuous shooting speed and noise management at higher sensitivities without sacrificing detail. The D3X supports a broad ISO range from ISO 100-1600, extendable down to ISO 50 and up to 6400 equivalent with up to 5 fps continuous shooting at full resolution, or 7 fps in the 10MP DX-crop mode. The acclaimed Multi-CAM3500FX 51-point autofocus system enables extremely accurate single-point accuracy with outstanding dynamic tracking for fast moving subjects in low light.

The Nikon D3X DSLR also delivers a superb response rate, with a start-up of just 12 milliseconds and 40ms shutter lag. The Kevlar/carbon fibre composite shutter has been designed for intensive professional needs and tested to 300,000 cycles.

The Nikon D3X’s magnesium body, which is sealed for moisture and dust resistance, also supports Nikon’s wireless system (the WT-4), HDMI output, offers a dual slot for CF cards and is compatible with the new GP-1 GPS unit.

Nokia warned us that something was coming today and here it is: the N97 is Nokia's latest smartphone that has both a 3.5" touchscreen display and a full QWERTY keyboard. You will recognize the Nokia touch in the design, but it is definitely more edgy than previous models . It is of course a 3.5G (HSDPA) phone that also has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. We can't wait to see how web browsing feels on this device. Notice how the homepage can be customized with widgets. We went through the marketing stuff and here's what's important:
Highlights

It's been a long time coming, but after dabbling with touch on the midrange 5800, Nokia has finally brought a touchscreen to its brand new flagship S60 smartphone, the N97.

But it's not quite a full dive into touch—there's still a horizontal QWERTY keyboard hidden below the 3.5" 640x360 resistive touchscreen and accesable via a smooth 30° flip mechanism. The N97 will run an even further touch-enhanced Symbian OS, S60 v5, which features the 5800's quick contacts bar and adds an assortment of customizable desktop widgets that can pipe in your Facebook info, RSS feeds and the like, much like those found on Nokia's internet tablet OS. The widgets will be open to third party developers and available via the traditional "Downloads" Symbian app "for now" says Nokia—so not quite the App Store equivalent fans would hope for, but customization via software add-ons is definitely the route being pursued here.

But alas, the downsides. Characteristically for Nokia, the N97 is aimed at Europe and Asia first. So big ballers in Moscow and Macau can expect to be toting an N97 sometime in the "first half of 2009," with a U.S. release (with the appropriate 3G bands) to follow "soon after." In Europe it'll run a hefty €550 ($695) unsubsidized.

The model we briefly handled tonight in NYC was, of course, the Euro version, with no U.S. 3G (and, sadly, no Wi-Fi). Its handlers were keeping it close to the vest, and with no connectivity there wasn't much testing to be done, but we can say that the hardware is indeed pretty—befitting a $700 Nokia piece. The desktop Symbian widgets look nice, but the drawbacks of a resistive touchscreen (there, as always, to ensure character recognition via a stylus for Nokia's Asian market) were immediately noticeable when dragging widgets around the desktop.

Rounding out the gaudy specs are 32GB of on-board memory (with 16GB more available via microSD), A-GPS with Nokia's refreshed Maps 3.0 app, 5MP camera with Zeiss lens and LED flash and N-Gage support.

Full press release follows:

Desktop. Laptop. Pocket: The era of the personal Internet dawns with the Nokia N97

Tilting touch display, QWERTY keyboard and personalized home screen - a true mobile computer.

Barcelona, Spain – Nokia today unveiled the Nokia N97, the world’s most advanced mobile computer, which will transform the way people connect to the Internet and to each other. Designed for the needs of Internet- savvy consumers, the Nokia N97 combines a large 3.5” touch display with a full QWERTY keyboard, providing an ‘always open’ window to favorite social networking sites and Internet destinations. Nokia’s flagship Nseries device introduces leading technology – including multiple sensors, memory, processing power and connection speeds – for people to create a personal Internet and share their ‘social location.’

“From the desktop to the laptop and now to your pocket, the Nokia N97 is the most powerful, multi-sensory mobile computer in existence,” said Jonas Geust, Vice President, heading Nokia Nseries. “Together with the Ovi services announced today, the Nokia N97 mobile computer adjusts to the world around us, helping stay connected to the people and things that matter most. With the Nokia N97, Nseries leads the charge in helping to transform the Internet into your Internet”.

The Nokia N97 introduces the concept of ‘social location’. With integrated A-GPS sensors and an electronic compass, the Nokia N97 mobile computer intuitively understands where it is. The Nokia N97 makes it easy to update social networks automatically with real-time information, giving approved friends the ability to update their ‘status’ and share their ‘social location’ as well as related pictures or videos.

The home screen of the Nokia N97 mobile computer features the people, content and media that matter the most. Friends, social networks and news are available by simply touching the home screen. The 16:9 widescreen display can be fully personalized with frequently updated widgets of favorite web services and social networking sites. The Nokia N97 is also perfectly suited for browsing the web, streaming Flash videos or playing games. Both the physical QWERTY and virtual touch input ensure efficiency in blogging, chatting, posting, sending texts or emailing.

The Nokia N97 supports up to 48 GB of storage, including 32 GB of on-board memory, expandable with a 16 GB microSD card for music, media and more. This is complemented by excellent music capabilities, full support for the Nokia Music Store and continuous playback time of up to 1.5 days. The Nokia N97 also has a 5- Megapixel camera with high-quality Carl Zeiss optics, 16:9 and DVD quality video capture, and support for services like Share on Ovi for immediate sharing over HSDPA and WLAN.

The Nokia N97 is expected to begin shipping in the first half of 2009 at an estimated retail price of EUR 550 before taxes or subsidies.

Nokia, once King of the Mobiles, has been dragging its heels of late. It's almost like the Finnish company was having a party and the iPhone turned up, ate all the cake and started playing hide and seek with the girls. Nokia threw its toys from the pram and refused to play until the iPhone went home.

One zillion iPhones later and Nokia has realized that nobody is listening to its cries anymore. Today we see the company's new N97, a touchscreen and QWERTY equipped "multimedia computer" (remember, Nokia doesn't make phones anymore) that is a clear answer to Apple's precocious device. What's inside?

On paper, it's a solid iPhone-beater. In fact, it should probably come with a dirty white undershirt and half a bottle of whiskey. The camera is a Zeiss lens equipped 5MP model with an LED flash and a video mode, the phone sports a huge 32GB of memory, boost-able to 48GB with microSD cards, 3G comes in HSDPA flavor and there is Wi-Fi in the shape of 802.11b and g.

In addition, there is real and faux GPS, just like the iPhone, and an accelerometer and a compass (like the G1 Googlephone). But take a look at it. Fitting in all that gear has made the N97 a little chubby. There's another problem, too -- the handset won't be available for another six months, time enough for the rest of the world to move on. How much? €550, or around $695 in today's dollars.

Nikon today introduced the long awaited D3x DSLR camera. It is a 24.5MP(CMOS Sensor) DSLR that is able to take pictures in 6048 x 4032 resolution with the EXPEED™ Image Processing System that shoots about 5 frame per seconds, and 7 fps in DX crop mode. Priced at €6300, the camera also boasts an ISO sensitivity from 100 to 1600, expandable to 50 (Lo-1), and 6400 (Hi-2). Other features include a 3-Inch LCD screen, and HDMI output. What makes the Nikon D3x more special is that it is also compatible with Nikon’s GP-1 GPS receiver, and is able to capture up to 4400 shots per single charge of its lithium ion battery.
The BlackBerry Storm is getting held up at the border, but it sounds it’ll be crossing over very soon on both Telus and Bell. The iPhone’s getting unlocked for OS 2.2, while rumours of a Microsoft competitor based on the Zune continue to wriggle their way to the blogospherical surface. Samsung’s going all business with their BizBee brand, potentially following up on some BlackJack lookalikes. Lastly, the Omnia hit Verizon this week, to the gleeful cheers of many a gadget geek. Will got sucked into a Black Friday shopping vortex this week, but should re-emerge laden with discount consumer goods for next week’s episode.

Nikon Pro has obtained the official specifications of the Nikon D3x (from this blog):

5fps of continuous shooting at full resolution

ISO 100-1600, extended to 50-6400

16-bit colors EXPEED processor

There's no video-capture capability and photographers like Seb Rogers think that it's pretty late in the game, but I'm sure that Nikon fan will point out to many positive points. I don't know for other people, but I'm just an amateur with a taste for DSLRs and these days, the only thing that I want from my next camera is much better low-light shooting capability. What about you?

10 Million doesn't sound like much, but Samsung is talking about phones with a digital camera that snaps 5 Megapixels (and more) photos. Seen like that, it's not bad at all!

However, when I see numbers like that, I have to ask: what's the usage like? Do people buy these phones because of the camera or do they buy it for something else and it happens to have a 5MP+ camera?

Right now, it doesn't matter how many Megapixels (MP) phones have - the lens is pretty crappy, so pictures tend to be bad, with some notable exceptions. it's a bit like Bluetooth (BT). By now, BT is practically everywhere, but yet, a large majority of phone owners don't use it on a daily basis because it's not all that great - it just happens to come with the phone.

Congrats to Samsung for their milestone - we're looking forward to seeing the 150 phones or so that they will build on 2009.
