Why tear out the innards of your Wii, just to put an N64 inside? An SNES in a Wii would still be questionable, but at least that’s an SNES. This inbred Nintendo creation is dubbed the “Wii64″, and keeps the Wii’s blue lights lighting up whenever it is turned on. The Wii64 is currently on eBay, where bidding began with $49.99. It’s somehow up to $64. What we need are more console guitars.

It doesn't really make much sense to rip apart the innards of a current generation console and replace those with one from a couple of generations ago. Still, truth is often stranger than fiction, and this modder has decided to use the chassis of the Nintendo Wii to carry the innards of a Nintendo 64. This hybrid creation is dubbed the "Wii64", and retains the Wii's blue lights that light up whenever it is turned on. The Wii64 is currently being put on eBay, where bidding began with $49.99. Not something we would want to get though, but it is still an interesting hack to begin with.

T-Mobile’s Samsung Behold is now available in pink and “espresso” colours from T-Mobile, without so much as a press release. C’mon TMo, throw us a bone, here. Regardless, we’ve got a big ol’ roundup here of all the specs, videos, and pictures you need if you’re eyeballing the Samsung T919. With comparable stylings to the Omnia, the Behold won’t have any trouble finding a captive audience, it’s just a shame this thing is running a proprietary OS rather than Windows Mobile, or hey, even Android. Still, the draggable widgets and overall TouchWiz UI make for a pretty smooth experience. If you happen to be locked into another contract, AT&T is offering the nearly the same thing in the Samsung Eternity. If you’re ready to buy, the Samsung Behold is available for $149.99 on contract after rebates.

By Andrew Liszewski

I’m not entirely sure where the idea to develop a video game based around oral hygiene and dental care came from, but it almost seems like Commodore was trying to make up for the other… let’s say… ‘less educational’ titles available for the system. And this was 1982, well before video games became the scapegoat for the majority of society’s woes. As I recall, Tooth Invaders was included with certain Commodore 64 bundles since I’m sure it would have had a hard time competing with other more exciting titles on store shelves. I mean it’s hard enough to get kids to brush every day as it is, I can’t imagine too many would have been thrilled with the idea of doing the same thing in a video game.

But it turns out that Tooth Invaders was one of the first games my uncle actually had for his Commodore 64, and whenever I visited it was usually the best option. In the game you play a kind of an oral superhero who goes around brushing small parasites off a set of 8 teeth. You had to be fast though, as the parasites were spread by a small army of roaming green meanies who were quick to undo all the work you had done. Once you had a tooth completely cleaned you could call for a fluoride rinse which would permanently protect the tooth so you could concentrate on cleaning the others. Of course if you didn’t stay on top of things a tooth would quickly become so covered with parasites that it would basically fall out, and I’d be lying if I said it didn’t make an impression on a 5 year old kid who felt brushing was a waste of time. Though it did take our family dentist quite a few years to convince me that my mouth was free of those roaming green meanies.

Dell is taking advantage of the Core i7 release to build the Studio XPS, a powerful machine that costs around $1100 with a reasonable configuration. And by "reasonable", here's what we mean:

Vista 64

Core i7 2.66Ghz

6GB of RAM

500GB, 7200rpm hard disk

ATI HD 3450

We told you that the 2.66Ghz Core i7 would be a very interesting baseline. Also, while this could be an "OK" gaming machine (with better graphics), At this price, it actually is a great main system for an "enthusiast" - not a gamer. By enthusiast, I mean someone who would use digital content like photos and media, but not really play the latest games. The ATI HD 3450 graphics processor is just too weak. For an extra $200, you can get an ATI HD 4850 that is much more suitable for gaming. The 6GB of RAM are definitely a great compromise. I have 8GB, and I hate to admit that I rarely use more than 6. Good call.

This year's theme is one of flowers, illuminated in 64 billion colors that are reported to change color so quickly that they actually resemble a river more than a field of blooming plants.

Pretty, but we're not so sure. We really like our holiday lights to involve plastic figures, mismatching bulb sizes and, if at all possible, a MIDI rendition of Grandma Got Ran Over By A Reindeer. While titles like "world's fastest" and "world's largest" are fleeting at best, it's rare that we see such things taken down this quickly. Last week Cray delivered a big dish of braggadocio, talking up its 1.64 petaflop XT Jaguar supercomputer as the fastest (non-classified) machine in the world. Now, like some rocket skate-wearing coyote who's run out of thrust, it's been stymied by IBM's Roadrunner, deployed at Los Alamos. TOP500 is the authority on these matters and that list's latest rankings place Roadrunner in first place with a speed of 1.105 petaflops; Cray's Jag comes in second with a paltry 1.059. What about that 1.64 figure from last week? That was the hypothetical limit, and while it did deliver real-world performance of 1.3 petaflops for the folks at Oak Ridge, TOP500 relies on the Linpack benchmark for its ratings and apparently the Jag just couldn't deliver the goods there. Perhaps, Cray, it's time to make another call to ACME -- or AMD as it were.

Roadrunner beats Jaguar in TOP500 supercomputer rankings, cartoon antics strangely absent originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 17 Nov 2008 09:51:00 EST.
