He’s outdone himself this time however, with this one, dedicated to the Ingraham Cabinet Co., creator of radio cases in the WWII era. The Ingraham case mod is walnut-clad (though veneered) just like the originals he was inspired by, featuring a hand-built basswood frame layered on a mini-ITX SilverStone case.

Check out the polished chrome knob on the front from an Arlen Ness catalog, perched atop a final retro flourish: a Firewire 400 port. under the hood, things are less art deco and more modern: a VIA VB8001 motherboard, a 1.6GHz Nano processor, 4GB of DDR2 memory, and a 64GB SSD.

Great work. Jeff was clearly born in the wrong era. Luckily for us.

Last time we heard from Jeffrey Stephenson he had crafted an art deco-styled casemod that, spiritually at least, brought us back to the watery confines of Bioshock. He's back with another classic-looking device, dedicating this one to Ingraham Cabinet Co., creator of many a fine walnut-ensconced radio case in the WWII era. His Ingraham case mod is similarly walnut-clad (though veneered) with a hand-build basswood frame layered atop an otherwise mid-grade mini-ITX SilverStone case. The focal point is a finely polished chrome knob on the front that Harley riders might recognize from an Arlen Ness catalog, perched atop a final retro flourish: a Firewire 400 port. Inside (pictured below) things are rather more modern: a VIA VB8001 mobo, a (rarely seen in the wild) 1.6GHz Nano processor, 4GB of DDR2 memory, a 64GB SSD, and not a single vacuum tube.
Continue reading Jeffrey Stephenson impresses with another wood grained, retro casemod

Jeffrey Stephenson impresses with another wood grained, retro casemod originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 03 Dec 2008 10:53:00 EST. While still running light 1.6GHz Atom processors with 1GB of RAM, the systems now feature ATI Radeon HD 3400 series discrete graphics with 256MB of DDR2 memory along with HDMI output to play back high def video on an HDTV. And when you account for the Wireless-N networking and 160GB SATA hard drive, you realize that the the Eee Box could be a contender in the low end home theater PC market.

No word yet on pricing or availability, but the original Eee Box ran a palatable $300. [Asus]

Note: Image is of the original Eee Box.

Man, talk about maturing early. ASUS' Eee Box just hit the shelves here in America a few months back, and now the company is already pushing out a pair of successors. Both the Eee Box B204 and B206 retain the same overall design and processor (1.6GHz Intel Atom N270), but you will find a 256MB ATI Radeon HD 3400 GPU to complement the 1GB of RAM, 160GB SATA II hard drive, multicard reader, 802.11n WiFi, Windows XP Home, 10GB of online Eee Storage, gigabit Ethernet, four USB 2.0 ports, DVI connector and the freshly added HDMI socket. The B204 trumps the B206 (weird, right?) with the inclusion of Bluetooth and a built-in battery that acts as a UPS in case of power failure. We've already seen just how decently the B202 could handle 1080p playback; it's just that much easier with a dedicated HDMI port. As is par for the course with ASUS, there's nary a mention of price / availability.

ASUS Eee Box B204 / B206 grows an HDMI port, handles high-def material originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 03 Dec 2008 08:35:00 EST.
Onyko has just released its HDC-1L nettop audio PC that will sit nicely in most living rooms without looking out of place. Features of the HDC-1L include :-

Intel Atom 1.6GHz processor

Intel 945GC Express chipset

Windows XP Home Edition

1GB RAM

160GB SATA hard drive

DVD SuperMulti drive

Six USB 2.0 ports

Ethernet connectivity

Now this -- this is an interesting character. Part nettop, part HTPC, the Sotec-branded HDC-1L series is a unique mixture of components that are traditionally found in either a diminutive desktop or a media center PC (but rarely both). First and foremost, this little bugger relies on a 1.6GHz Intel Atom 230 CPU, and it only packs 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, Windows XP, Ethernet, audio in / out, VGA, slot-loading DVD drive, a few USB ports and a remote input. Sadly, there's no integrated TV tuner to speak of, but with a starting price of just ¥59,800 ($640), we suppose you could add one and still come in well under the cost of most pre-fab HTPCs. The box should be available in Japan as early as tomorrow, and it'll purportedly be sold with a number of upgrades and extras for those fond of the bundled approach.

[Via Impress]

Gallery: Onkyo's HDC-1L straddles the fence between nettop and HTPC

Filed under: Home Entertainment, Media PCs

Onkyo's HDC-1L straddles the fence between nettop and HTPC originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 02 Dec 2008 13:31:00 EST.
MaxData of Germany has launched its 10" netbook known as the Belinea o.book 1XS, which is rather hard to roll off the tongue. Still, as the Bard once iterated, a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet - in this case, it would perform just as well (for a netbook, of course), thanks to the following standard features :-

Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz processor

10.2" display at 1,024 x 600 resolution

1GB RAM

160GB hard drive

802.11b/g Wi-Fi connectivity

Windows XP

With a 3-cell battery, don't expect this to last too long before you scurry over to the nearest power supply. The Belinea o.book 1XS is priced at 339 Euros and comes with a 2-year warranty.
