As if RIM’s BlackBerrys weren’t secure enough, they’re initiating a takeover bid for Certicom, a security firm based out of Mississauga, Ontario. Certicom has worked with RIM in the past to provide public-key and elliptic curve cryptography technology to BlackBerrys, but they’re holding onto upwards of 350 juicy security patents, ones used by even the American NSA. RIM plans to be paying out $1.50 per share, amounting to a $66 million buyout, which is a fairly generous offer considering their current stock price. If you’re looking to get rid of some Certicom stock at a good price, the take-over starts on December 12th.

Triband GSM (900/1800/1900 Mhz), GPRS/EDGE connectivity on 1st SIM card

Dual band (900/1800 Mhz), GPRS/EDGE connectivity on 2nd SIM card

Bluetooth 2.0 and USB

Dimensions: 115 x 48 x 16 mm

Weight: 140 g

What, no 3G? Wi-Fi? GPS? Anything? It’s not a bad camera at least, and the DuoS is pretty cool, but I guess these things are more about being pretty than anything else. Will it be able to compete with Vertu? Maybe, but I don’t think it holds a candle to the Motorola Aura. This will cost around EUR 1200, or $US 1500 when it’s available.

Nearly every desktop PC on the planet makes use of the same peripherals. The mouse and keyboard have been with computers almost as long as computers have been around. In the world of peripherals, there are a few big names in mice like Logitech and Microsoft.

Logitech announced today that it has now shipped its one-billionth mouse. Logitech shipped its first mouse, the Logitech P4, in 1982. By 1996, the company had shipped one million mice globally. By 2003, Logitech had shipped 500 million mice and a mere five years later Logitech has doubled that amount to one billion mice shipped.

Logitech builds a whopping 376,000 mice per day and 7.8 million mice every month. Those figures are mind boggling to most of us. Consider that there are currently over a billion people worldwide using computers and it’s easy to see how large the market for mice is. Logitech has its eyes on shipping its second billion mice. Analysts expect the next billion people globally to begin using computers by 2014.

GiftCertificates.com is joining the iPhone wave with the launch of the free GiftCards application. Their unique pitch? Allow users to select, personalize, and purchase gift cards without the need to go to an outside website.

Developed in partnership with by Trillusion Media, the GiftCards app features all GiftCertificates.com’s categories such as clothing, department stores, electronics, entertainment, health and beauty, home, kids and toys, jewelry, restaurants, shoes & accessories, specialty, sports, and travel — as well as “browse by brand” categorization.

Both physical and e-Gift cards can be purchased from the app, and each one can be personalized using contacts from the address book. The GiftCards application also utilizes the built-in GPS receiver of the iPhone 3G to show the nearest location of a vendor’s store.

Commenting on the announcement, the company’s CEO Gary Krow said: “By making it easier for our customers to access the GiftCertificates.com marketplace, the GiftCards application enhances our customers’ online shopping experience and positions us to better serve them in the mobile future.”

Interested? You should be - the holiday shopping season is well under way. Here’s the link to AppStore.

Eric Archer mods old 8mm cameras to record sound instead of light. He chose vintage movie cameras because of their amazing design, and because the 8mm format fits well with semiconductor light sensors.

He starts by removing the film transport and shutter, leaving just the optics, "My standard modifications include a battery-powered preamp with
audio line-out (1/4″ mono jack) + a viewfinder-mounted LED that
indicates sensor overload, and a headphone amplifier (1/8″ jack). I’ve
prototyped an accessory mount that holds the sound camera steady along
side a video camera, focused on the same point for audiovisual
recording.

Looking through the viewfinder, you see a normal image. The light
sensor’s active region corresponds to a tiny spot in the center of the
viewfinder; sweeping the camera across a scene can reveal different
sounds, and their source can be pinpointed easily."

So how does it sound? Weird. Some recordings are like eavesdropping on a robotic mosquito's dream, while others evoke a microphone stuffed into a bucket of sand or the roar of escaping steam.

CEO David Hill dropped the info during the 3D Entertainment Summit, acknowledging plans to bring the 3D feed to CES (finally, we won't have to miss the big game this year -- like we'd ever watch an SD feed stretched on cheap hotel plasmas) and select movie theaters, but balked at pushing technology forward. Citing costs absorbed by broadcasters in switching to high definition, he's looking towards consumer electronics manufacturers to turn over HDTV profits and start another round of upgrades for early adopters. While they argue over who picks up the check we don't expect more than a few demos here or there, but with Panasonic, LG and others already taking the baton it's just a matter of time, maybe when ESPN takes over things full time in 2011?
Filed under: CES, HDTV, Home Entertainment

BCS Championship game live 3D broadcast coming to CES, movie theaters originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 03 Dec 2008 06:22:00 EST.

After my Atari 2600 sent hordes of blocky robots after me in countless games, I shouldn't be so surprised that Atari was working on a real robot that could be the henchman of the humble brains of the VCS. The image above is a Polaroid of a mini Androman (later renamed Atariman) that would interact with a 2600 game. The moves you made in the game would control the actual Androman robot's course on a 3D map. You scored points for the fastest and most efficient programs.

You may recognize this robot as part of a series of robots developed by Nolan Bushnell's (Atari's founder) Androbot company. Androbots were designed as educational add-ons to Apple II computers, but eventually Atari computers could control them as well. I don't believe that this mini version ever existed as a retail product (the photo is from Atari's prototyping lab), but it sounds like it could have been a viable product considering the amazing feats the 2600 is still performing today.

It's been a long time since I've seen a robot programming kit packaged as fun and educational. The only thing I can think of outside of Lego's Mindstorms is the cheesy robot that came with the mid 80's Nintendo system. Am I alone in still wanting a home robot to be my best friend? I just don't see myself snuggling up to my Roomba.

Thanks to the Atari Museum for uncovering the photo.

related:

HE-RObot: the next generation of Heathkit HERO robots
Tomy Omnibot 2000 - your very own household assistant
Rob Fulop's Final Atari Game To Be Released
Robot Fan - NES R.O.B.'s twin brother?
Verbot: 1980's voice controlled robot
2-XL - robot or 8 track tape player?
