But what I don't love is lugging these heavy books around while I'm trying to admire the Champs-Elysées or while trekking across the Sahara Desert.

That's why I was thrilled to learn that Frommer's is going digital by offering iPhone and iPod touch apps available for purchase from the App Store in iTunes for $9.99. So maybe they aren't free, which would be nice, but you'd spend the same amount on a book and this way you don't get stuck carrying a heavy book during your travels!

To get the app, just click on the travel category in the App Store and you'll find the 2008 editions of Frommer's London, New York, San Francisco and Paris.

Nice mashdown.

Think outside the barbecue space.

From the website:

Barbecue Ball Cap

A backyard twist on a 400-year-old classic

Toque blanche, the French call this imposing hat, a mark of culinary mastery for 400 years.

While we admire the traditional design, we felt it wasn’t as functional as it could be for backyard barbecue usage.

So we created this Barbecue Ball Cap in 100% cotton twill — just as grand as the classic French version, but with a bill that shields your brow from the sweltering sun.

Band adjusts to fit the head of most any grillmeister.

Note: Many toques have exactly 100 pleats, supposedly the number of ways a chef can prepare an egg — we lost count of the pleats on ours at sixty-something.

Includes wicking sweatband.

While Red Toffee can be touted as the Ferrari of Media Chairs, the cleverly christened Matrix Unplugged chair surely gives a tough competition to some of the most unique chairs in the world. The inimitable chair, meant for the rich and crazy folks, has been crafted from the torpedo lifting jaws of a nuclear submarine. The best part is that it’s the original unit from a never-used prototype, so you won’t find any more of these anywhere. Crafted to perfection, the chair position is adjusted with the help of motorized hydraulics and moreover, there are a number of tiny adjusters that take care of your back perfectly. In case, you don’t like it coated in orange, Zoran Milivojevic will custom color the thing to suit your liking. Sci-fi movie buffs are, without doubt, going to admire the chair. An incredible feat of engineering and design, the Matrix Unplugged is a bargain at $37,000.

Some time in the future, we will discover an ancient yet technological race of druids who will have their own version of Stonehenge. Instead of a series of stones gathered in a circle as a calendar, this strange futuristic race of druids will have a robotic arm that will rearrange a set of numbered cards to indicate the current time.

The future is now. A clever designer who my source does not name has built the robot arm and the numbered cards for it. It appears that the cards are made of some simple foam with some neodymium magnets to make certain they are put back in the same place every time.

If you want to see this Stonehenge in action for yourself, feel free to watch the attached YouTube video after the jump.

As the video shows, it takes less than a minute to change from 12:09 to 12:10. Granted, that is two numbers that the robotic arm has to shift around, but imagine if it were four, like changing from 11:59 to 12:00? I suppose the user has to account for the time it takes to change the time when viewing this clock.

I suppose this clock is good for getting a good idea of the time, rather than the exact time. However, can you imagine being almost late and you need to know the exact time, and the Stonehenge is locked in a time change? “Come on, hurry up! What time is it for crying out loud!”

Still, you got to admire the designer for rethinking the idea of a clock. I can totally see it in some doctor or business waiting room, for aesthetic purposes only. Hopefully it will come available to the general market in some sort of kit or something.

Within this tiny little black orb lives a tiny little digital video camera. What makes the Camball unique is its totally self-contained digital video recorder.

All of the requisite electronics are crammed into a sphere that’s just a hair smaller than a ping pong ball.

The Camball can record 320×240 or 640×480 resolution video using MPEG-4 encoding. Since it stores everything on a tiny SD memory card, you can save up to 8GB of video with the appropriate card.

Alas and alack, this nifty little gadget is only available in Korea at this time, and there aren’t any plans to offer them stateside at this point. For the time being, you’ll just have to admire them from afar over at Korea’s Funshop.

Prices for the Camball range from 189,000 to 229,000 Korean Won (appx. $185 to $225 USD), depending on if you want the optional MP3 player capability.
