ExpressGate is the Asus-branded version of Splashtop, a pre-boot operating system (a slimmed down version of Linux) that your computer can boot into faster (around 10 seconds) than if it was Windows. It gives you access to basic applications like Skype, Firefox and so on… Asus is already using ExpressGate in its motherboards and laptops. It’s been confirmed that the Asus Eee Box B202 will also feature it. If your computing needs are basic, it looks like a computer than you can turn on and off without having to hand around, waiting for the boot. To give you an example, I recently installed Windows Vista on a very fast machine and it took about 35 seconds to get to the login screen.

Nokia’s has just launched is new mobile for the Arte series of “jazzed up” cellphones with the 8800 Carbon Arte.

The old slider phone now has panels of carbon fiber in its front and rear faces, along with titanium and stainless steel.

Internally it looks like the phone is pretty much unchanged, though now its storage has been bumped up to 4GB from 1GB.

Its a tri-band GSM phone and Nokia expects it to hit the shops in Europe by the end of the year for around $1,600

We know it's been a tough few days since the last Eee PC launch, but ASUS has now thankfully come through with four more ever so slightly different models to feed your questionable appetite, this time for Taiwan. Those include the 1000HD XP, 904HD XP, 901 XP and 900 XP (16G), each of which, obviously, run XP, and at least two of which (the 901 and 900) come in some of the same eye-catching colors that Korea got a taste of the other day. Somewhat curiously, only the 901 XP is listed as having an Atom processors, while the others are simply described as packing an "Intel Mobile" processor. Otherwise, you can expect the usual range of specs found on countless similar models, with prices coming in at the local equivalent of $444 to $539.

[Via Slash Gear]

Just days after FCC approval, the IdeaPad S10 netbook just popped on Lenovo's retail site tossing a big Chinese wrench in ASUS' plans for global Eee PC domination. At least we think so -- the S10 wasn't expected to hit the US until October (China September 5th). Availability says "ships within 2-3 weeks" but clicking on the "customize and buy" link results in an "Exception Occurred" error -- pretty much on par with Lenovo's US retail launch routine. Anyway, for <s>$399</s>, er $429 (thanks again dollar) you'll take home 512MB of memory and 80GB worth of hard drive, a 1.6GHz Atom N270 proc, Windows XP, and a paltry 3-cell Lithium-Ion battery. Annoyingly, the progression from the base-model black color to white or red costs an extra $10 without any appreciation in specs. While ASUS' is approaching the netbook market like attrition warfare, it might just be a few, well-placed products with stellar support that wins over the netbook market in the end.

[Thanks, Kevin]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Trust Asus to roll out four more Eee PC models in Taiwan - the 1000HD XP, 904HD XP, 901 XP and 900 XP (16G). There is no confirmation as to whether the four models mentioned here will ever make it out of Taiwan and into Europe as well as the US, so don't go hyperventilating just yet. You can tell by the "HD" suffix in the model names that those will feature a hard drive, while the "XP" suffix suggests that Windows XP will be the operating system of choice. Are you going to jump onto the netbook bandwagon just yet, and if yes, which model would you gun for?

Asustek Computer have come to an agreement with Orange to make available a free Eee PC bundle - only in the UK market. Once you decide to set aside good money for a 2-year 3.5G online service contract with Orange, you will get a free Asus Eee PC 900 for your daily portable computing needs. The cost for this deal averages out at approximately £25 monthly. Sounds pretty good to me if you’re a heavy data user as the Eee PC 900 is no slouch.
