This solar panel tie collects light and, through a process that even Scientologists don't understand, converts it to usable energy. The tie has a little pocket on the back that stores the gadget you're charging, and is completely impractical. I'm all for green shit (figuratively), but I just don't see these catching on. The majority of guys that have to wear ties (like me) work in fluorescent cubicle farms where this thing would get little to no charge. I mean, I can't even see a fucking window from here. We used to have one, but management boarded it up when they found out we liked looking out of it. What somebody needs to do is invent solar powered hard hats or something a landscaper would wear, like, I dunno, a suntan. Oh my God, I'm brilliant.

Hello, patent office? Are you sitting down? Good, now put this in your pipe and smoke it -- solar-powered suntans! I drew a picture and everything. Well, it's on a bar napkin, so I'll just tell you -- it's a really tan guy on a lawnmower charging a boombox. It's great, he's got a cord coming out of his belly button and everything. Hello? HELLO?

It only takes a glance to realize that Boston Acoustics' Horizon i-DS2 iPod boombox is merely a cleaned up version of the knobby Duo-i, but we must say, the new look is pretty sleek. Built to function with any dock-connecting iPod, this 60-watt speaker system includes twin 3.5-inch full-range drivers, a composite video output, USB connector and an auxiliary input for plugging in other DAPs / PMPs. The unit itself arrives in glossy white or glossy black, though users with an itch to customize can select from a variety of P.O.P. metal grilles. On paper, the unit isn't too shabby, but the $179.99 price tag is somewhat of a drag.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

A group of immigrant teens from Trinidad that now live in Queens, New York call themselves the Stereobike crew and add bad-to-the-ass audio systems to their bicycles. Systems that put the boombox I keep in my front basket to shame. The speakers, powered by car batteries and run through amps, output thousands of watts, capable of rattling the paint clean off my Prism. Just imagine, when these kids are old enough to drive and start buying their own cars -- they're gonna get broken into and their stereos stolen.

Audi meets audio…who doesn’t love a good pun? Especially when it is as good looking as this iPod inspired Audi designed by Ondrej Jirec, a design student from the Czech Republic. His concept Audi design takes the great American past time of making your vehicle into one giant rolling boombox to new heights. This bad boy features the mother of all audio systems with internet connectivity for downloading music onto the built-in 650 GB hard drive, a Bluetooth system for connecting two or more Audi O cars together, making for the largest rolling club ever. Best yet, it comes completely decked out with a couple of DJ decks and mixer. Look for this master blaster in the next installment of The Fast and the Furious Deaf Jam.

Designed by Andreas Kraeftner as part of his new GHETTOBASICS line, this simple rectangular foam pillow features an awesome black and white screenprint of a classic 1980’s JVC boombox. And while it doesn’t play music in any capacity, you can leave it on your couch at home or carry it with you on your shoulder wherever you go so that you always have a comfy place to rest your head. If you’re interested in getting a boombox pillow of your own you can contact Andreas directly via his website, but I have no idea what they might cost or if they’re even being mass produced.

Whenever my friends remember their lives in the 80's, they talk about MTV and bright colored futurist fashions, New Wave music, and the like. They seem to forget that the 80's were responsible for a lot of stuff that's not much fun at all like Paula Abdul (though her egomanical ravings these days are a guilty pleasure), Reaganomics, and lots of mauve... yes mauve.

For a while in the mid to late 80's it seemed like every institution I went into was splashed with mauve and grey - sometimes with brass appointments yet! I had never had an emotion about mauve before, but the mid 80's overexposure did it to me... I now hate mauve. Even consumer electronics of the time couldn't escape the creeping mauve. I had a friend with a walkman and boombox steeped in mauveness, but who could have predicted a mauve TV!

This Zenith TV is a stylish & compact 10 inch cube. The 9" CRT display is color, of course, though by now you probably sense that I wish it had one less color on it. The TV has a slick hidden handle, remote controlled digital tuner (still not totally common by the mid 80's), and remains a fine monitor for a classic Atari session today. One inch high LED's display the channel number - high tech aesthetic back then, annoying in a dark room now.

It's easy to forget how good the color can be on an older set. I hooked the Zenith up to one of those new digital decoder boxes, and got a lovely broadcast picture. Maybe if I keep my eyes on the TV show instead of the Zenith cabinet, I'll be able to bear to have the mauve mini-monstrocity in my house.

So whether you call it "dusty rose", or pronounce it the many ways people seem to, it's still just a pig-colored pigment to me. I like the TV too much to throw it out, it would just look so much slicker in any other color. Now... where's my taupe spray paint?
