According to an anonymous source, Apple's iPhone will soon be sold at Wal-Mart. Boy Genius Report's insider says that sales will begin on November 15.

The truth or falsity of this claim will be a nice litmus test of either (a) how far retailers will go to accommodate Apple, or (b) how far Apple will go to conquer the world. Wal-Mart typically demands heavy compromises from its suppliers, including control over distribution and packaging. For Apple to agree to this would go far beyond demonstrating that it never wanted to be a "cult," or that it has no interest in maintaining an elitist image: it would mean the hot breath of The Other America on the back of Steve Jobs' neck.

More likely is that Wal-Mart has simply agreed to take iPhones the way Apple sends them, as Best Buy does, (and remember, Best Buy had to retrain staff and sell at close to cost, hoping to profit on accessories), or that the rumor is bogus.

They name November 15th as the date of arrival, which is just in time for shoppers to overlook it as they clear their local Walmart of cans of beans to prepare for the econocopalypse that's sure to destroy Western civilization as we know it. You heard it here first, folks: the hot gift this Christmas will be a can of Heinz baked beans.

Nintendo announced their new iteration of the Nintendo DS series. It’s called Nintendo DSi.

Kotaku: Nintendo Announce New DS: The Nintendo DSi

This version can no longer play Game Boy Advance games, but it has a huge list of new features:

It’s thinner than the DS Lite.

The screens are larger (3.25 inches).

A 0.3 megapixel camera and webcam (that’s 640 X 480 for all you folks from 1992).

SD memory card slot

Built-in Internet browser

The DSi Shop, where you can download games for the Nintendo DSi just like you can for the Wii.

The camera could introduce some intriguing game play. Just like the microphone and the touchscreen did for the original DS. I think I would have preferred a camera that faced toward ME while I’m playing the game. With that feature, game designers could program a way for me to see my opponents when playing online. Of course, that’s probably asking a bit much from a little handheld gaming device.

Honestly, the iPhone is seriously kicking butt on the “it’s already in my pocket” front. Since I don’t carry my DS around with me everywhere, I have found myself playing games on my iPhone a little more than on my DS.

The Nintendo DSi will be available in Japan in November and the rest of us will have to wait a while until it comes here. I’m not quite ready to give up my GBA games yet, so I’ll see what they do to entice me.

A 10-year old's driving services were requested by 43-year old Randy Lewis (that's actually him in the picture, he was really wearing that shirt) and Paula Elaine Evans because they were too drunk to drive themselves. Other passengers included another 10-year old and a 6-year old. However, the driver lost control of the van at 90MPH and flipped it, before it finally came to stop on its roof. Thankfully, the children were released from the hospital later with only minor injuries (the adults could have died for all I care).

When the authorities arrived on the scene, Lewis admitted to having consumed at least 15 beers as well as some alcohol while Miss Evans pounded down as many unidentified pills as she could before police arrested her.

Wow, making a 10-year old drive you home because you're wasted? That's just sad. I think we can all agree here that designated drivers should at least be 11½. You know, so they can reach the pedals.

So the BlackBerry Storm hasn't even made it onto Verizon yet, and in flies word that RIM is actually doing something other than resting on its laurels (and contemplating buyout offers from Microsoft). The Boy Genius has it from two independent sources that RIM is currently hard at work on a "super-phone" of sorts, complete with a 5-megapixel auto-focus camera, 1GB of memory and a "near-HD quality screen." In all seriousness, it's not too shocking to hear that the outfit is working up a formidable opponent to go against HTC's Touch HD / T8290, but it's not stopping there. We're also told that a second and third-generation Storm are already being whipped up in the design room, but it's pretty safe to say you won't be seeing those in the flesh for a good while. Regrettably, that's it for the details, but you can rest assured that we'll be keeping an ear to the ground for more.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

In fact, they were one of the first to offer a VoIP app for the iPhone. Geraldine Wilson said: "Truphone has clearly established itself as a pioneer of next generation mobile telephony with ground breaking applications such as Truphone for the iPhone. But every successful disruptive technology must eventually become the norm in order to truly succeed, so the mass market is where the future must lie for Truphone."

Previous CEO James Tagg, who originally invented and developed the Truphone service with CTO and co-founder Alistair Campbell, moves to the role of Chief Architect.

Are the blatant rockist tendencies of Guitar Hero and Rock Band ruining your enjoyment of those otherwise brilliant titles? Of course they are -- we noted your b-boy flava from two blocks away. But don't sweat it because Genius Products, 7 Studios and Quincy Jones III have your niche in their sights and will happily sell you Scratch: The Ultimate DJ when it hits the stores sometime in Spring 2009. With a game controller designed by Numark (known worldwide for its DJ controllers -- there's an example for you after the break), the game will be available for the Xbox 360 and PS3 and feature tracks by "many" (as yet unnamed) hip-hop artists. Trevor Drinkwater, President and CEO of Genius Products promises all and sundry "a cutting-edge game that captures the vital energy of hip-hop culture." And here we thought they were cynically jumping on the Guitar Hero bandwagon! We stand corrected.
Continue reading Scratch offers Numark-controlled Guitar Hero for hip-hop heads

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Part of what makes retro games so great is their history of battling simplicity. Relying on pretty graphics could only get you so far back when graphics were restricted to a few colors in slow-moving 2D. Bogging a game down with useless features for the bullet-points on the back of the box was harder when memory size and processor speeds were greatly limited. Instead, you needed a good solid game built on a basic fun concept, no smoke and mirrors allowed! Well, there's no mirrors but in today's retrospective they'll be plenty of smoke on the battlefield of Armor Alley for the PC and Macintosh!...

Armor Alley is an action/real-time strategy game that is actually the sequel to an Apple II game called Rescue Raiders. Armor Alley takes gameplay very similar to Choplifter and changes it drastically into a 1 on 1 RTS. I remember playing this game a ton a few years ago on a primitive monochrome laptop PC (a Toshiba Satellite, I believe) running Windows 3.11. This game supports video modes from CGA 320x200 to EGA 640x350, which makes it easy to run on primitive computers as well as modern systems!

The game has aged fairly well. It's still challenging, fast-paced and a whole lot of fun. The gameplay is built around 2 opposing bases facing off on a side-scrolling 2D battlefield. The player takes the role of a sole helicopter pilot also acting as battlefield commander. The enemy, whether controlled by a human opponent (multiplayer is supported) or the formidable AI in the single player campaign has an agile helicopter as well. The opposing sides must pilot their helicopters deep behind enemy lines, taking out as much of the enemy's front line while earning funds to purchase units.

Once sufficient funds have been raised, the player can purchase infantry, tanks, missile launchers, vans and even more helicopters (though only one can be flown at a time). The only way to defeat the enemy is to get a van all the way into their base. Vans are basically defenseless except for their radar scrambling equipment, so your best bet is to scatter them in convoys containing plenty of firepower. Convoys are the heart and soul of strategy in Armor Alley. Launching an effective convoy and protecting it with your helicopter will get you very far when done right. In addition, various battlefields in the game are covered in bunkers, AA guns, barrage balloons, etc., all of which can be captured using infantry.

Graphically, at the highest settings, the game is on-par with an early Genesis (aka Mega Drive) game and the visuals hold up rather well. The game has some nice but primitive physics with momentum effecting your helicopter and gravity causing bombs to accelerate as they fall. Things like that weren't necessary to the gameplay, but it's little touches like these that can make a good game into a great game. The game's only real shortcoming is it's rather sparse sound effects and total lack of music, but both PC speaker and Sound Blaster sound are supported, adding to the game's generous range of compatibility.

While this game was doomed to obscurity, the concepts have not been forgotten. The relatively recent Super Army War for Game Boy Advance and the more recent Glory Days 2 for the DS effectively act as great spiritual sequels. Fans of strategy games and arcade shmups alike have something great to discover in Armor Alley.
