As you’re about to see, both devices are quite capable and it’s hard to pick the favorite one. At the end, it’s a matter of personal preferences. Which form factor do you prefer - dual slider or a candybar?

Here’s the Nokia N79 promo video:

Along with N85, Nokia also officially announced the launch N79 cell phone in UK. Comes in a fresh green color, this candybar handset offers three smart covers on the bundle, along with the ability to change its theme to match the cover. Nice.

Being the successor of N78, the phone sports a 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optic lens, geotagging function, and dual LED-flash. Imagine what a wonderful photo you can take, huh. Once you take the shot and store the pic inside its 4GB microSD card, you can share it with your friends via Bluetooth. Not just the photo, you could even share the music on the car radio, thanks to the available FM transmitter module.

Other features include direct access to Nokia Music Store, up to 24 hours of music playback with dedicated music keys and 35mm earphone jack for non-stop music on your ears, and built-in GPS navigation with Nokia Maps 2.0.

Nokia N79 cell phone is expected to be available in UK market next month.

Well, they're here. Nokia's latest and greatest N-series devices just hit the market like a trio of well-aimed bricks -- or at least that's what Nokia's hoping. We got to spend a little bit of hands-on time with prototypes of the new devices, and while we came away slightly impressed, we were nowhere near E-series impressed. Here's our biggest problem with the lineup: the only one worth talking about is the N85. Other than minor screen size disparities, the 16GB built-in memory of the N96 and the fresh candybar form of the N79, these three phones are pretty much exactly identical on specs, and yet the N96 manages to be inexcusably bulky, while the N79 sports an inexcusably terrible screen -- we're hoping that was just the prototype being funky, but we saw two versions with the same problem. The N85 isn't exactly the pinnacle of thinphoneness, but its amazing OLED screen and more refined design make the N96 look like more of a rough draft than a sibling. On the interface side, the phones are much more responsive to S60's new motion and transitions, but Nokia has oddly chosen to disable the Navi Wheel scrolling in all three phones -- a weird move, but we can't say we blame them, we haven't had a single good experience with Navi Wheel since Nokia introduced it. In all, we're not exactly thrilled about Nokia's prospects for winning over the masses with this new series of devices. Sure, Nokia will protest that it's going after the high-end users, but 5 megapixel cameras, GPS and WiFi are no longer the differentiators they once were, and users have begun to expect thinner, sexier devices at prices far below the N96's gargantuan $895 pricetag.

Gallery: Nokia N79, N85 and N96 hands-on

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Looking for the Touch Pro in a slightly less conspicuous package? HTC (who else?) thinks it has the answer in the S740, a pretty thorough revamp of the S710 of old. The basic concept is the same -- wrap Windows Mobile Standard into a candybar package with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard -- but the S740 takes design cues from the Touch Diamond and Touch Pro for a thoroughly 2008-ish look. The feature list has naturally been refreshed, too, with 7.2Mbps HSDPA on the 900 and 2100MHz bands (read: screw you, North Americans), quadband EDGE, a 3.2-megapixel fixed focus cam, WiFi, GPS, and a 2.4-inch QVGA display. And, you know, if all that isn't enough to impress your snobby friends, just slide open that keyboard, say "boom," and watch the jaws drop. Look for it to filter across Europe starting next month.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Our friends over at the UK get first taste of the new Nokia N-series phones, N85 and N79. The Nokia N85 smartphone is geared towards gaming and music, equipped with all the right features for its type. The N85 slider is an N-Gage phone and has built-in gaming controls for the service.

In the music front, the N85 comes pre-bundled with an 8GB microSDHC card so users can swap it for a bigger capacity if they want. The device has a 2.6-inch AMOLED screen which doesn’t just give you brighter colors; it also saves energy consumption so you can enjoy 28 hours of music playback on just a single charge. Other features include 5MP camera, GPS for geo-tagging, HSDPA, and WiFi.

The Nokia N79 phone which replaces the previous N78 model is touted as a fashion phone. The phone’s back covers can be swapped to fit the tastes of the owner. The candybar phone has a 5MP camera with dual-LED flash, 4GB microSD card, GPS, 3G, and WiFi. Although it can’t match N85’s 28 hours of playback, it still does well with 24 hours.

The Nokia N85 and Nokia N79 smartphones will be available in the UK next month.

The image associated with this post is best viewed using a browser. We've had eyes on both of these for a while, but Nokia today has dropped a couple new N-Series phones into the official UK chute, and they are expected to follow stateside soon. The N85 slider (left) appears to be replacing the N81, and the N79 candybar does the same for the N78 (even though it only dropped in the US a few months ago). Gaming and music seems to be the focus of the N85, which adds N-Gage support and ditches the built-in storage in favor of an 8GB micro SD card. An AMOLED screen reduces power consumption for up to 28 hours of music playback. The N79 bumps the N78's camera up to 5MP and adds an LED flash and swappable faceplates. All feature Wi-Fi, GPS and 3G across the board, but the rumored US 3G support we're still waiting to hear for sure on. Just as we'd envisioned, the Invision candybar (if a phone this stubby can, in fact, be called a candybar) from LG is now a reality for AT&T. The phone becomes just AT&T's third to support its MediaFLO-based Mobile TV service, taking a similar line to Samsung's Access by stuffing a landscape display, 1.3-megapixel camera, and HSDPA into a squarish case that's sure to make minimalists and traditionalists swoon; what's more, it also takes the honor of being AT&T's smallest Mobile TV-equipped handset to date. It's available today for $99.99 with a $50 rebate and two years' worth of commitment -- just be sure to factor the cost of the Mobile TV add-on into your budget.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
