If you were a bit taken aback by the £40 ($59) monthly tariff required to take the G1 home for free, apparently you weren't alone. T-Mobile has hacked that requirement down to £30 ($44) per month, and while the carrier itself has said that it's not a reaction to poor sales, industry analysts are saying otherwise. In fact, a company spokesperson even states that it has chosen to "offer the device free with a £30 contract to make the pricing more competitive in light of recent device launches," even though it is "well on track to achieve [its] sales forecasts." Whatever the agenda, we're all about getting phones into hands for less, so three cheers all around. Except for you early adopters... bummer, eh?

[Via Pocket-lint]

T-Mobile lowers price of G1 admission in the UK to better compete originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 03 Dec 2008 07:44:00 EST. Inrix is stepping up their game and partnering with Networks in Motion the white label provider of navigation and now traffic by Inrix to millions of subscribers to mobile phone users. The service is well known as VZ Navigator from Verizon, as well as others in a long client list, including, AAA Mobile® on Verizon, AT&T, Sprint,

Networks in Motion cites traffic as the most asked for feature, and Inrix is now providing that to these users who can check the routes and traffic impacts from just about anywhere.

Inrix has hundreds of thousands of GPS probes out there giving them a read on traffic conditions on nearly a million miles of roads. One has to wonder if in providing the traffic service to NIM, Inrix might have reciprocal access to the millions of users of the service giving Inrix a more powerful service. I don't have any confirmation; just wondering.

Full Press Release after the jump.....

Networks In Motion (NIM), the award-winning wireless navigation, hyper-local search and location-based services (LBS) company with the largest mobile phone navigation subscriber base in North America, and INRIX®, the leading provider of traffic information, today announced a premium data partnership. NIM will use Total Fusion Traffic data from INRIX to enhance its AtlasBook Navigator™ application for mobile devices, empowering the AtlasBook user with the most accurate ETAs, optimal route recommendations and timely traffic alerts available on the market.

AtlasBook Navigator is a white-label navigation software platform available to wireless carriers for GPS-enabled mobile phones featuring local search and other LBS applications. With maps, local directories and turn-by-turn directions with voice guidance, AtlasBook Navigator transforms the mobile phone into a personalized travel guide.

"Traffic is one of the most requested features from our mobile navigation customers," said Doug Antone, president and CEO of Networks In Motion. "We're excited to now offer INRIX's unique, routing-optimized traffic service to our carriers and partners, which will further improve the customer's experience, enhancing AtlasBook with INRIX's broad market coverage, high quality and collaborative approach."

The combination of INRIX Total Fusion Traffic with AtlasBook's turn-by-turn routing application provides speed information on 800,000 miles of roadways, including busy city streets and arterials, in addition to freeways and highways across the U.S. INRIX's unique, routing-optimized traffic intelligently produces highly accurate traffic data by combining real-time information from the largest GPS probe network in the world - featuring nearly a million GPS-enabled taxis, service vehicles, airport shuttle services and other commercial vehicles as well as consumer cellular GPS-based devices - with traditional road sensor information.

NIM has the largest mobile phone navigation subscriber base in North America, surpassing three million paid users. Navigation applications powered by Networks In Motion are currently available through major wireless carriers in North America to customers who purchase a GPS-enabled mobile phone and subscribe to the navigation application, which is commonly branded by the carrier.

"Millions of consumers rely on the information provided by Networks In Motion before, during and after their commutes," commented Bryan Mistele, president and CEO of INRIX. "We are proud to partner with NIM - a clear leader in the industry - to provide compelling solutions to help ease commutes all over the country."

By Ravit Lichtenberg (blog)

Zlango, a presenting company at the AlwaysOn Venture Summit’s has an application that allows users to create their own avatars and icons to communicate in a visual language in IM, SMS, and email. The application is a full SMS client—at the moment it requires a download but in the future, it plans to become integrated in the SMS platform. Zlango’s business model relies on licensing deals with carriers and mobile operators, and on partnership with media companies, merchandising and branding, and ad revenue. Zlengo is also considering a flat monthly fee for the use of its application—similarly to a flat caller ID or other features landline phone carriers have been offering. The company has deals with carriers in Israel and Europe and has been in advanced discussion with additional players in the mobile manufacturer and carrier industry.

A natural audience for Zlango is the tween and teen market who, for about $1 price point would find this a highly compelling way to communicate with their friends. Asia is a great fit for that. In addition to its existing icon-based language (I have in my hands the 10 commandments in Zlangauge), Zlango is also built for user-generated content: users can create their own icons and avatars or even their own secret community language.

The greatest challenge Zlango is facing is choosing a starting point from the many opportunities it has. A solid market entry strategy while maintaining its long term vision, is going to be key. Zlango is just entering the US market—it’ll be a very interesting company to watch.

Then you may have occasionally encountered the problem of what to do with your kid when you're out in public and you're the one that needs to go potty. The makers of the BabyKeeper have a solution: hang your toddler on the wall. The BabyKeeper is a carrier seat that unfolds to become a harness that you can hang on a bathroom stall. The two straps have large metal hooks within them, covered with non-slip safety webbing.

The 'Keeper is made for babies 6 to 18 months old and can do double duty as a shopping-cart restraint as well. For $40, it seems like a very practical idea with just one downside: It looks ridiculous.

Canadians will finally be able to get their hands on the Nokia E71, and surprisingly this phone will retail for a mere $49.99 with a 3-year contract and minimum monthly voice and data plan of $45. That's pretty cheap (the purchase price), considering the fact that we were prepared to fork out $99.99 for it from the beginning. Would you make a beeline at Rogers Wireless to pick up the thinnest smartphone in their line-up, or would you rather give it a pass since you can't bear to remain stuck with that carrier for three years?

Samsung has recently unveiled a new low-end clamshell - M3110. The somewhat stylish handset is designed for mass market, and the Korean giant priced it accordingly. It will be sold for about $180 and that’s without any carrier subsidies.

As for the specs, there are two screens (external - 96×96 pixels and internal 128×160 pixels), 1.3 megapixel camera, standard 3.5mm audio jack, and possibly Bluetooth. Available colors include purple, blue, green and lemon-orange.

And that’s about all we know at this stage. We’ve no idea whether some carrier in Europe or U.S. will pick it up, but the Samsung M3110 certainly looks like a best-seller, especially if offered for less than 50 bucks on a contract…
