China Mobile deploys the latest Motorola GSM solutions to increase network coverage, enhance capacity and user experience

BEIJING, China–6th August 2008 – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) announced today it has signed multiple contracts worth US $431m with China Mobile Communications Corporation (CMCC) for its GSM network upgrades and expansion. The contracts were signed in the first half of 2008 and reflect Motorola’s position as a global leader in GSM network solutions. Approximately 50% of the revenue from these contracts was recognized in the first half of 2008.

Following the US $394m contracts over the same period of last year, these multiple contracts mark another milestone of the cooperation between China Mobile and Motorola. The cooperation will enable China Mobile to expand its network coverage and manage its GSM network even more effectively; allowing the company to maximize its investment returns and to provide subscribers with enhanced services.

Under these agreements, Motorola will supply CMCC with GSM network equipment and a range of services. The expanded and optimized GSM networks will then be deployed across 16 provinces and municipalities within the coverage area of CMCC, namely Beijing, Tianjin, Sichuan, Zhejiang, Henan, Hunan, Guangdong, Yunnan, Fujian, Hubei, Shanxi, Jilin, Liaoning, Jiangxi, Anhui and Guizhou. These contracts also enable China Mobile to deliver enhanced and value-added multimedia functionality and services.

Motorola has won a number of significant GSM network expansion contracts over the past few years. Motorola’s GSM is attractive for service providers in both new and mature markets. As a long-term strategic partner of China Mobile, we continue to provide China Mobile with a state-of-the-art GSM network that extends its network coverage, maximizes investment and delivers the most attractive communication experience to its customers.”

As the Chinese telecom industry is going through industry-wide restructuring, China’s telecom operators are undergoing one of the most critical changes in history. “No matter in what direction China Mobile moves forward after the restructuring, Motorola is well-placed to provide the best migration path for both the wireless network and the core network of China Mobile,” Ruey-Bin Kao continued: “Motorola would be proud to be a part of the industry growth story. As China Mobile strives to build the best-in-class future network, Motorola will make every effort to maintain and develop the long-term strategic relationship with China Mobile, doing everything we can to make our own contribution to the growth and expansion of China Mobile.”

China Mobile has been playing a leading role in the development of the mobile communications industry in China and holds an important position in the international arena as well.
Whether for people who are tired of scratching airtime cards or simply trying to figure out a better solution to keep their cell phone always ready to talk, the African manufacturer Psitek...

Whether for people who are tired of scratching airtime cards or simply trying to figure out a better solution to keep their cell phone always ready to talk, the African manufacturer Psitek Communications has announced a wireless device that comes with an integrated SIM card enabling subscribers to get airtime anytime without needing a physical card to scratch. Although in many countries it is possible buy airtime by means of an ATM of loading airtime online with funds of a credit or debit card, this option is not available for a large number of cell phone owners around the world, mostly people under pay-as-you-go plans or free plans that require an airtime scratch card to add electronic airtime to their devices.

Ryan Callis, Psitek Head of East Africa Region said “Scratch cards are an unnecessary headache and there is a global trend to phase them out.” With Timpa a telecommunication solution similar to the Rica, Jembi, and Adondo payphones, vendors can sell airtime using an electronic feed.

The concept behind Timpa is provide vendors with bank accounts where they can deposit money for as many airtime as they want loaded into a device. This airtime can be sold in small amounts to mobile subscribers and Timpa will then provide a receipt for the total amount of airtime each one purchases.

Psitek has already partnered with Celtel and Safaricom, service providers who will sell to the company bulk quantities of airtime to be stored in Psitek’s server to guarantee not only airtime supplies but real time process of every deposit received from a vendor using a patent system in agreement with banks, monitors incoming and outgoing transactions every ten minutes.

Scanning those transactions, Psited will be able to determine which vendor requires more airtime adjusting its stock accordingly, although they are just planning to start a two-year trial service before deploying the system throughout the African country.

Although Psitek keeps a realistic perspective of the market in the knowledge that people is too familiar with scratch cards to load airtime into their mobile device. Even though, the company is confident to increase the acceptation of Timpa as people understand how electronic loading works and find in this system a more efficient way to keep talking regardless they have an airtime scratch card or not.

Questioned about the success of the project Ryan Callis said “We anticipate that 50 per cent of airtime in the country would be sold electronically by June next year.”

Despite the release of Timpa is of regional importance, Psitek’s proposal is a model to follow for other countries in which electronic airtime loading is a service not yet available. In Africa, Callis procrastinates that it will take about five years to make scratch cards an obsolete airtime loading method.

Trial of the Timpa service are ready to go in Tanzania after the success of electronic airtime funding in Angola, Malawi, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo where this alternative service is been already used.

The 200,000 fisherman that work on Lake Victoria will soon have the opportunity to use mobile phones to call for help if they get into trouble on the world's second largest inland lake. Pan-Africa mobile operator Celtel, a subsidiary of Zain, and Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC), in an initiative coordinated by the GSMA's Development Fund, have committed to extend the mobile networks across the Lake Victoria region, fuelling economic and social development of the lakeside communities and potentially reducing the number of fishing-related deaths each year.

Zain and Ericsson are upgrading Celtel's existing infrastructure and building an additional 21 radio sites to provide mobile coverage up to 20 kilometers into the lake. This will take about six months and ensure mobile coverage to over 90 percent of the fishing zones, where up to 5,000 people die each year from accidents and piracy.

The project will use Ericsson's Extended Range software package to more than double the effective range of radio base stations and Ericsson's Mobile Position System, a location-based service that enables emergency authorities to triangulate the mobile signal of fishermen in distress. Ericsson's green site solutions, including solar and hybrid power* solutions, will also be utilized to provide electric power to the base stations in the more remote island areas.

The GSMA and Zain are working with the governments in the region and not-for-profit groups to establish a rescue coordination service to provide assistance to lake users, which in the longer term will be run by the EAC's planned Regional Maritime Communications Centre (RMCC). This initiative is helping to fulfill the objectives of the EAC Lake Victoria communications strategy, which was adopted in 2007.

Ericsson, Zain and the GSMA's Development Fund have spent the past six months investigating how to provide better communications for the 30 million people in Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda who live in the immediate vicinity of the lake. The move to extend the region's mobile network reflects the companies' commitment to corporate responsibility and to improving lives through communication, and is supported by a solid business case based on increased subscriber numbers and a higher volume of data traffic, thereby ensuring the sustainability of the project.

Dr Tom Okurut, Executive Secretary of the Lake Victoria Basin Commission says: "This is an exciting project that will contribute fundamentally towards the improvement of safety of navigation on Lake Victoria. It is the first major telecommunications infrastructure investment project that complements and aligns well with the planning and preparations coordinated by the EAC."

Zain also plans to provide value-added services, such as up-to-the-minute market prices, which will have a significant impact on local people's livelihoods. Academic research** in India found that using mobile phones can significantly boost fishermen's earnings by enabling them to find the best prices for their catch. The availability of mobile services is also expected to benefit the tourism, transportation and fish export industries and could be key to attracting further business development in the region.

Dr Saad Al Barrak, CEO of Zain Group, says: "Zain is committed to supporting the communities we serve making vital telecommunications accessible to all. This investment will be further supported by our One Network concept, which eliminates international roaming fees for our customers who cross regional borders."

Jan Embro, President of Ericsson in sub-Saharan Africa, says: "This project is an excellent example of how Ericsson's core technology can contribute to social and economic development. In this case there is a win-win situation: we are enabling the basic human rights of safety, security and economic development, while at the same time the project is supported by a sustainable business case."

Dawn Haig-Thomas, Director of the GSMA's Development Fund, says: "Mobile phones and mobile networks have played a critical part in saving countless people's lives in emergency situations all over the world. The expansion of coverage across Lake Victoria will extend this important lifeline to the thousands of people who depend on the lake for a living."

Notes to editors:
* Ericsson's hybrid power solution combines diesel with battery technology. Traditional off-grid diesel solutions consist of two diesel generators working alternately. With Ericsson's new hybrid energy solution, one of these diesel generators is replaced by a battery bank with specially-designed batteries that can handle a large amount of charges and discharges.

** "The Digital Provide: Information (technology), market performance and welfare in the South Indian fisheries sector", by Robert Jensen.
Ericsson's new hybrid energy solution for diesel and batteries has been selected by Celtel Uganda. The solution significantly reduces energy consumption in mobile networks outside the electricity grid, cutting network operating costs by up to 50 percent. Celtel Uganda is the first operator to install this solution.

Celtel in Uganda is now converting all diesel-driven radio base station (RBS) sites outside the power grid to Ericsson's new hybrid energy solution, which works together with all of Ericsson's outdoor RBS cabinets. More than 100 sites have been converted to date. A typical site consumes approximately 20,000 liters of diesel annually and this new solution reduces the need for fuel by 50 percent. With additional savings resulting from fewer fuel deliveries being made and from less maintenance being carried out, the total cost of ownership per site is lowered still further.

Around 50 percent of all RBS sites in Uganda are running on diesel continuously. Many high-growth markets are dependent on diesel as their main energy source, particularly where the electricity supply is unreliable or nonexistent, such as in rural areas.

Traditional off-grid diesel solutions consist of two diesel generators working alternately. With the new hybrid energy solution, one of these diesel generators is replaced by a battery bank with specially designed batteries that can handle a large amount of charges and discharges.

Ericsson's hybrid energy solution is a self-contained power solution that enables a parameter setting for the batteries' optimal charging and discharging levels, thereby extending the lifetime of the battery and the generator.

Siyabonga Zulu, Operations Director, Celtel, Uganda says: "We are rolling out Ericsson's hybrid solution in all our Ugandan operations. This new solution offers a more powerful battery bank in a cabinet with low-power cooling, and allows us to reduce our diesel expenses by 50 percent. The savings are dramatic, and will allow us to extend our network cost-effectively, providing coverage to people who have never before had access."

Strategic product manager for Site Solutions at Ericsson, Kent Westergren, says: "The customized solution has been positively received in the market as it significantly cuts operational expenses while providing an opportunity to reduce the network's environmental footprint. Often a site is too large to be economically viable for a purely solar power solution, so this solution is an excellent choice when an operator wants to cut costs or go green."

Ericsson's hybrid energy solution for diesel and batteries is the latest in a series of energy optimization innovations that the company is driving to help reduce total cost of ownership, while at the same time improving the environmental performance of mobile network growth worldwide.

In 2006 Ericsson reduced the power consumption of its latest generation of WCDMA base stations by 35 percent, and has pioneered the introduction of many alternative energy sources such as solar power and biofuels in the telecom sector, to make mobile telephony economically and environmentally sustainable in emerging markets.

Notes to editors

Sustainable energy use in mobile communication (White paper):
www.ericsson.com/technology/whitepapers/sustainable_energy.pdf

The Ericsson Corporate Responsibility Report 2006 is available from:
www.ericsson.com/ericsson/corporate_responsibility/index.shtml

Ericsson is the world's leading provider of technology and services to telecom operators. Nokia Siemens Networks will supply a full turnkey 2G and 3G mobile network, including core and radio networks, operations and business support systems, applications and a full suite of services, including managed services.

Under the terms of the contract, Nokia Siemens Networks will provide to Zain in Saudi Arabia the latest 2G and 3G mobile network technologies, including HSDPA and HSUPA, based on the latest base station design and distributed architecture for both radio access and core networks according to the 3GPP release 4 standard. With the distributed architecture of its mobile softswitch and multimedia gateway, Nokia Siemens Networks is able to offer Zain in Saudi Arabia a cost optimized core network solution with a fast rollout to enable new advanced services for subscribers.

Nokia Siemens Networks will deliver a full turnkey solution, including managed services for five years from a dedicated local network operations center. The US$ 935 million turnkey contract also includes network planning, implementation, project management, systems integration, logistics management, multi-vendor maintenance, field services and network optimization for the base station sites. The company will also provide a wide range of operations and business support system (OSS/BSS) solutions that will help Zain reduce operating expenses and manage the network and service quality for its subscribers. Nokia Siemens Networks will also provide Zain with its convergent prepaid solution, charge@once select, for voice and data.

Nokia Siemens Networks is the sole supplier of Zain Saudi’s core network, including the industry leading MSC Server mobile softswitch for cost-efficient voice and data services, as well as the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), which enables a wide range of rich communications services based on the Internet Protocol.

“This huge project will radically change the face of mobile communications in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and sets the benchmark for future mobile communications in the region.
