I am familiar with the company ZAGG. It makes some interesting products like the InvisibleSHIELD film that is laser cut to exactly fit gadgets of all sorts form Mac notebooks and the iPhone to various Blackberry devices. In fact, I use their film to protect the screen and body of my iPhone and it works great.

ZAGG has announced a new line of products called ZAGGaudio and the first product from the line is the Z.buds earphones. The earphones retail for $79.99 and feature a microphone built-in to allow users to place and receive phone calls.

Two color options are available including black and red colors. An inline control for volume, music, and phone calls is integrated. Zagg promises that its headphones will sound as good as sets costing twice as much. At $79.99 the Z.buds are one of the more costly sets of earphones out there, so they had better sound good.

I say "proposed" because, like everything else about Windows 7, this is all alpha and subject to change. But these features are very cool, and really should be included. One more thing: These screens were projected on a wall in a well-lit room, so they look horrible, but anyone familiar with Media Center (and Microsoft has shipped like 100 million of them, so that should be plenty of ya) will have a good idea of the pleasantness to come. Or you can just drink in the following prose descriptions:

• Shows appear dissolved behind menus - When you're watching something and want to pull up a menu to add a new show or browse the channel guide, or even go into another area of the Media Center, the current show stays on, not as a picture-in-picture, but tastefully dissolved into the background.

• Chronological turbo scroll for channel guide - When you're looking at the channel guide, but want to go from Tuesday to Sunday in a hurry, you just hold down the arrow button on the remote, and the days start to whip by. Listings become a blur, but the days of the week, and the portions of the day, appear floating over the listings to give you an idea of when to stop.

• Live thumbnail forward and rewind - During HD video playback, you might want to jump around. Grab the time marker and drag it forward or back, and as you do, you see a miniature version of the show playing backwards or forwards at the same speed.

• Launch TV from Start menu - Media Center can occupy a pole position in the Start menu, and when you hover over the MC logo, a list of recently recorded shows pops up, along with other frequently used MC features.

• Floating Media Center gadget - Not only can you access shows from the Start menu, you can browse MC features from the desktop with the gadget. I am not clear whether or not you'll get to have actual video playing in it, but for people who need MC at their fingertips, this appears to be a nice, subtle execution.

• Alphabetical turbo scroll for music - The chronological turbo scroll on the channel guide is cool, but this one will come in more handy for me: As you scroll through the countless artists in your music collection, the names become a blur but your location in the alphabet is denoted by two letters, probably so that those longer letters like J, M, R and S can be broken up better.

• Drifting cover art grid - When you're playing a song, the album art for that track appears with some basic metadata, and all the cover art for every other track you own materializes and drifts in the background. The primary cover art jumps from side to side and top to bottom, so that everything is in constant, fluid motion.

• Scattered photos picture show - As you're playing music, you can opt for a photo show that essentially reaches into a folder, grabs a handful of shots, scatters them evenly around the page, and then zooms in on one at a time. A nice touch: In the wide angle, all the photos look like desaturated black-and-whites, but as each shot gets its own screen time, it magically becomes full color.

• Copy remote content - If you are browsing multiple libraries or Media Center PCs and come across a show you like, you can watch it or save it for later by hitting "make a copy." As long as there's no broadcast flag or some other DRM, the vid will flow over to your local HDD so you can watch it when you've left the network.

• Virtual channels without TV tuner - One of the new Media Center's central concerns is the new popularity of internet-based video, not just YouTube clips but whole TV episodes like those shown on Hulu. DVR functionality is key to making the most of an MC, but at launch there will be loads of virtual channels with shows you can watch just as easily. Microsoft demoed a special MSNBC channel that had clips and full shows; it's of course feasible for them to build similar channels for third-party web video services too.
Again we have Sony Ericsson quietly releasing an existing device in new color. We really wouldn’t mind to have an official release. I do understand it would be kinda dull to read about the new color option, but it would help websites and blogs spread the word more easily — it’s always a good idea to get information right from the horse’s mouth.

Anyway, it’s the T700 model, which is now available in additional color - “Shining Black.” We’ve no idea where you can buy the newly colored T700, but we like the way it looks. The black is always a viable option as you can mix it with whatever you’re wearing. We also don’t have any information about the price, but we guess it’s in the line with the original device’s pricing…

We discovered a very full-featured, high performing, affordable printer for home and/or small businesses, with the particularly attractive feature of being wireless. Read on for the full review.

Setup

Straight out of the box, the WorkForce 600 immediately impressed with its sleek, all black design and curvy lines. Its base footprint is approximately 15% wider and longer than a legal sheet (11″ x 14″) which is about as small as they can squeeze it considering that it has an 11×14 flatbed scanner.

It took less than 10 minutes to peel off the protective packing plastic and tape, and instinctively extend the various trays as well as angle out the front control panel which also hosts the 2.5″ color LCD screen. Installing the 4 printer cartridges (3 color, 1 black) took only a few minutes.

On the other hand, setting up the various drivers and programs on a Windows XP system took seemingly forever. In actuality, it took over 20 minutes on a pretty fast system. I was disappointed to find that I wasn’t offered too many choices as to which programs were installed or given much of an explanation as to what they did. I came to find out that at least one of those applications was used for easily setting up scanning options and then pulling down the result to my computer. I would have rather known this up front when I installed everything. So Epson can do with sprucing up the installer and providing checkboxes so the user can decide what to install.

Photo Printing

I immediately wanted to test out the photo printing capabilities and quality. I snagged a USB stick with some photos of various resolutions and plugged it into the USB port on the front. The 600 recognized the drive and started scanning for photos. It was quite easy to go through the menu options to decide what I wanted to do with the photos. The 2.5″ screen made it easy to pinpoint which photos I wanted to print and how. One of the features that I had never thought of as ‘needing’ in a printer was the photo proof sheet which was a nice way of printing off thumbnails of lots of photos to help you identify the few good ones.

I ran a couple of tests, and was really impressed at the quality of the photos printed. There are 2 quality levels for photos - normal and best. While you can see the difference when you observe them carefully side by side, unless you’ve got quite an artistic eye, the normal quality is still excellent. I printed some portrait photos on glossy paper and could see distinctions such as stray hairs and subtleties in eye color. I’m probably going to frame one of these printed photos. Now you do pay (in time) for the better quality - a full-color 4×6 photo took just over 1 minute at normal quality but over 3 minutes on the ‘best’ setting.

Of course it also support PictBridge so you can print straight from your digital camera.

Printing

The WorkForce is no slouch in the printing department with speeds up to 38 pages per minute (ppm) in black and white. As with photo printing the quality is very good - black text on white paper is crisp and has very little smudge factor. The WorkForce printers all use special Durabrite Ultra ink which is a type of thermal ink, and Durabrite is quick drying and smudge proof. I intentionally tried smudging newly printed color and b&w printouts with little luck. I was also pleased to see that there was no ink bleed through or wrinkling with cheaper, thinner paper.

Scanning

Here is another area where the Workforce 600 excelled. I tested scanning a page that I had ripped out of a glossy magazine and that had sat in my laptop bag for weeks, getting crumpled in the process. I smoothed it out as best as I could and laid it on the flatbed scanner. The result looked brighter and crisper than the original while staying faithful to the original. That’s in all likelihood due to the magnification and brightness of my monitor, but human visual perception being the most important factor here, the scanner performed very well. Given its 2400×2400 dpi resolution, you’ll be hard pressed to need much more for day to day tasks.

Copying & Faxing

While I live in a cell phone only household and could not test the fax function, I was able to test the copy function which is one of the main components of faxing. I was not quite as thrilled about copies as I was with scanning as the pages don’t go through the same scanner the way that much larger copiers tend to function. However, this is not to say that the copies were inadequate, but I did find that my both b&w and color copies lacked the same punch and crispness as the original.

As with other multifunction printers, you can copy straight to a USB stick or other compact memory card. Of course, this works for scanning as well.

Connectivity

Now here’s the feature that I think is the icing on the cake: WiFi connectivity. No longer do you have to sit your printer near your computer, network switch or run a ridiculously long Ethernet or USB cable across your office. Setting up WiFi was also very easy using the setup utility. I am yet to have any issues with the network connectivity to the 600. It supports 802.11b/g and is n-compatible.

If you would rather be wired, then you can go with either the 10/100 Ethernet jack or USB 2.0 connection.

Conclusion

It doesn’t seem that long ago that Epson was the world’s brand of choice when it came to home printers, having mastered the dot-matrix market. HP, Canon and Lexmark seem to have had better brand recognition in the recent past, but Epson is set to reclaim some of their former glory with these fine new all-in-one printers.

A watch phone is one piece of convergence consumer electronics that I don’t really agree with - it looks plain weird talking to your wrist (hence making a Bluetooth headset essential), and the screen is way to small to be of any productive use. Still, that hasn’t stopped people from coming out with a range of watch phones, and the sWAP is the latest in a long line.

The sWaP Watch has turned the tables on our plucky pocket phone friend and has stolen all of its coolest functions. It not only tells the time, but the wearer can pop in their SIM card to transform the watch into a wrist communicator a la Dick Tracy. And there’s more. Built into the strap is a 1.3 megapixel camera, so you can sneakily snap all of those top secret government documents you keep finding left on the pub table - or you could just take pics of your mates. The memory card slot allows you to insert a T-Flash card to upgrade the already impressive 128MB memory to a whopping 2GB. With all that memory you’ll have no problem storing all your MP3s and you can even watch MP4 movies on the 1.5 TFT color touch screen. You can access WAP sites, bringing the world wide web to your wrist and the watch is Bluetooth enabled, so if you’re sick of getting tangled up in your hands free kit you can banish the wires forever.

You will be able to pick up the sWAP watch for £249, and it makes for an interesting Christmas present.
