Epson has recently announced the release of their newest home theater projector the EH-TW4000. This model comes from the company’s Dreamio line that can only be found in Japan. The TW4000 features 1600 ANSI lumens, full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution, and an impressive 75000:1 contrast ratio. The exceptionally high contrast ratio is paired with Epson’s DeepBlack Technology that has been improved significantly for this projector. The TW4000 will not only present dark black levels and clear whites, but it will also give three dimensional images a greater sense of depth. In addition, the TW4000 comes with a variety of input connections, including two HDMI ports, an s-video, RCA, component, and a RGB connection. The projector weighs only 16.5 lbs, which makes it portable for family trips and light enough for easy mounting. The TW4000 is expected to retail for about $3700, but unfortunately there is no information as whether or not this projector will be released globally.

Deal spotting: I’m in the midst of trying Restaurant.com for the first time because of this incredible deal posted on FatWallet offering an 80 percent discount on the company’s gift certificates. Use FatWallet’s link to get to the site and then type the code “SURPRISE” to get 80 percent off your purchase. The special deal ends today.

I just tried it and the code works. As for Restaurant.com, we’ll have to see. The Arlington, Ill., company has a strange business model. It sells discount coupons to local eateries. Restrictions vary based on the restaurant.

Example, at Cask ‘n’ Cleaver in Orange, you would pay $10 for a $20 coupon off $35 purchase. Restrictions are the coupon can only be used Sunday to Thursday and dine-in only. Alcohol and beverage are extra. Also, for all restaurants, you’re supposed to use a coupon only once a month per restaurant. I bought one for Cask ‘n’ Cleaver, and paid $2. (My co-worker, Fast Food Maven, wrote about the site last year.)

While I’d often perused Restaurant.com for information — they offer menus to many restaurants — I never bothered to buy a coupon. It just felt odd to pay for a coupon. But the FatWallet deal did me in. I got a $100 coupon for a local steakhouse for $8 (instead of $40). Now, hopefully I’ll bother to go to see if it really works out.

For those wondering, the issues with the company vary. In FatWallet’s forums, comments mention the unreliability of the site when trying to order and that restaurant owners don’t get a cut of the money (!!). Over at XPBargains, commenters remind users to read the fine print. But for the most part, people do say Restaurant.com works. I’ll post an udpate after I’ve actually experienced the whole process.

I know this isn’t a typical Gadgetress post, but in keeping with the Alt+Save theme, plus it’s an online site, I figured, why not share the bargain with readers?

Doro, the IDEA award-winning phone design company from Sweden, announces the availability in the U.S. of mobile phones designed by experts in ergonomics and in communications technology to meet the needs of consumers seeking design simplicity and functionality in mobile handsets.

Two Doro HandleEasy models available in the U.S., the HandleEasy 330gsm and the HandleEasy 326i gsm, are GSM-compatible, include large easy-to-view display screens and keypads, features that baby boomers and active seniors use most, and none of the complicated features that often go unused.

The palm-sized Doro HandleEasy 330gsm features a high-contrast color screen, text messaging, FM radio, a variety of ringers, a speakerphone, and easy access to phone directories stored on the user’s SIM card. Doro HandleEasy 326i gsm features a conveniently larger keypad, four prominently positioned speed-dial buttons, a phone directory, a speakerphone, and a special coating that creates an easy-grip surface on the entire phone.

Jerome Arnaud, CEO of Doro, explained, “Many senior citizens still believe that mobile phones are difficult to use with complicated functions and therefore are reluctant to buy new ones. In contrast to other mobile phones on the market, we carefully design our phones according to the needs of active seniors and combine ergonomic demands with functions and simplicity. Baby boomers and active seniors don’t have to adapt their lives to our technology; we’ve already adapted it to their needs.”

HandleEasy 330gsm

“Finally, a phone that is intuitive to use and uncomplicated,” declared John Donnelly, a 65-year-old business management consultant based in New York and a Doro HandleEasy 330gsm user. “I turned on the HandleEasy 330 and began using it immediately without having to read through the manual. From the first minute I turned-on the Doro phone, I could easily navigate through the large, brightly colored screen, look through my phone book without reading glasses, check voicemails, and I especially like the cool, sleek design. It’s much nicer looking, lighter, and easier to use than the three-year-old phone I was carrying around.”

Eighty-two-year-old Manuel Machado – who lives in Modesto, Calif., travels extensively in retirement, and has limited vision from a medical condition, macular degeneration – said of the Doro HandleEasy 326i gsm, “This is a phone I can actually use! I can read the screen, see the directory, and easily make calls. This is the first phone I’ve had in several years that I will use more frequently.” Dr. Steven A. Machado of Los Angeles, Manuel’s son, explains, “Macular degeneration can be especially frustrating for patients like my father because it puts a blank spot in the center of their field of vision, making it nearly impossible to see details right in front of them, like when dialing a phone. So, this phone from Doro is a godsend for Dad.”

HandleEasy 326igsm

A fixture in most every household in Sweden for 35 years, Doro is well known for innovatively incorporating the latest technologies while maintaining simplicity of design and functionality. Doro HandleEasy 330 and 326i are the company’s first products available in the U.S.

Doro HandleEasy phones are currently available at all Centennial Wireless retail stores in six states (www.centennialwireless.com). “We are thrilled to offer Centennial customers Doro mobile phones designed especially for baby boomers and active seniors,” said Philip Mayberry, President of Centennial Wireless. “Doro’s long history of design innovation in Sweden is legendary in the telecommunications industry and now Doro’s user-friendly phones are popular all across Europe. Centennial is proud to be the first place in America that Doro phones are available.”

Doro’s U.S. Representative, Christopher Lundstrom, further explained, “Doro’s goal is to make its products available through a national delivery model in the months ahead, we want everyone to have the opportunity to enjoy Doro products. We are very pleased and fortunate to have Centennial Wireless offering our products in the U.S. market, Centennial created an excellent custom rate plan for the HandleEasy 330. This is a very attractive offering for both baby boomers and seniors alike, a tailored rate plan is key for this demographic and the overall customer experience.”

This time they have a big news to report - iPhone has surpassed Motorola RAZR to become the #1 device used worldwide on their network, with 37% of requests coming from outside of the US.

The ability to access the internet with a device that is always with you offers new and exciting opportunities. Unlike a desktop PC, an internet-capable mobile device allows you to access all kinds of fun and interesting services, on the spot, wherever you are. You can search for retail locations, cafes, or restaurants, and find information on your resort. You can read the news and communicate with friends and family via the web through email, IM, and various social networking services. With an internet-capable device you can also easily share photos and videos with those close to you.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 180px; height: 160px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_h5hOmDEy1n4/SSRroJlNqBI/AAAAAAABAHM/pk9VGXrCwd8/s320/s60.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5270455801441265682" />

Internet in mobile is not only for fun – it can also provide you with help when you need it most. It’s useful to be able to look up maps on your home PC, but when you’re lost and running late for an interview, having search and mapping functionality on your device is invaluable. On a business trip or in a client meeting, closing a successful sale might depend on you having real-time access to your company’s pricing or stock information.

S60 5th Edition takes the internet experience to the next level, integrating it seamlessly into your daily life and providing a new kind of user experience with a touch-screen user interface.

Complete web experience

The S60 web browser, based on the open source Webkit browser engine, delivers full web content (HTML, JavaScript, CSS) compliance and performance, and provides you with an enjoyable, desktop-like browsing experience. Comprehensive support for both web and mobile internet technologies means that you can access both categories using the same browser.

The S60 browser's user interface has several innovative features, allowing a desktop-like user experience on small-screen devices. A "Page Overview" function with fast zoom support makes it easy to navigate between and around your favorite webpage. Visual history shows a thumbnail of previously visited websites, making it easy to identify the page you want to return to. The browser also supports multiple open windows, pop-up blocking, URL auto-complete, password manager, and a toolbar for accessing the most frequently used functions. Interactive forms built with AJAX, complex CSS, or Javascript are all accessible with the S60 web browser.

The internet is more than just a browser: Make it personal with web applications

S60 Web Runtime (WRT) combines the power of the web with the power of the smartphone platform by turning standard web technology into a powerful environment for creating mobile applications. Content owners can use these lightweight web applications to deliver instant, optimized access to the web-based services and content that you use most frequently. You can take advantage of web applications and personalize your mobile device for internet use. You can connect directly to the information and services that matter most to you, without having to open a browser, type an address, or carry out a search.

In S60 5th Edition, developers can use S60 Platform Services to add personal data and context awareness to their web applications. Web applications can combine web-based data with the S60 platform’s powerful capabilities, such as GPS location information, calendar, camera, sensors, and more.

As an S60 user, this development brings a new level of convenience and personalized services to your mobile device. Applications that integrate personal data, such as your current location, will make internet services even more powerful and relevant, offering a clear advantage over desktop-based environments.

Integrate web 2.0 into your daily life

S60 5th Edition also keeps you connected to online communities such as Share on Ovi, Flickr, VOX, and many more. With S60 5th Edition device you can take a photo and instantly share it with friends and family in your favorite community – it’s as easy as sending an SMS.

Many social media sites also offer a S60 mobile client to enable easy status updates. These clients can be found for example at the individual sites, where you can download and install them easily.

The power to browse the web is only one touch away

With touch-enabled products powered by S60 5th Edition, the internet experience is made even more convenient with the ability to scroll through webpages and interact directly with content by touching with a finger or using keys or a stylus. The experience is further enhanced with touch-optimized toolbars that provide easy access to browser and internet application options.

Nokia is committed to leading the evolution of the web in the future and making it a more mobile environment. We are also dedicated to offering you all the experiences available via internet-connected PCs – and more.

London, UK, - LG Electronics (LG) , a worldwide technology and design leader in mobile communications, and PRADA, world’s leading fashion brand, announced the global launch of the highly anticipated successor to the PRADA Phone by LG. In the outer peripherals, new handset preserves the same original minimalist exterior that has now become a key design inspiration of touch screen handsets worldwide. A defining modification for the new handset involves a set of aesthetics keys that slide out to form a more professional look that not only grazes an elevated level of sophistication, but is also a highly efficient communication tool that complements the latest PRADA Phone by LG’s technology.

The handset’s user interface also receives a powerful improvement with LG’s latest active flash UI technology and haptic feedback on touch input enhancing the experience of the phone’s exclusive contents offerings. Dynamic upgrades to the software is well complimented by hardware extensions that include 3G capability with HSDPA up to 7.2 Mbps and advanced 5 megapixel camera featuring slow motion video recording and DivX playback. Other features include Wi-Fi, full HTML browser, and video calling capabilities.

Reinventing the most exclusive form of mobile sophistication and style, the latest version of the PRADA Phone by LG magnifies the heritage of the predecessor with exclusive PRADA elements including ring tones, wallpapers, and video clips that are carefully selected for users to fully experience the handset inside and out. Each of these unique contents displays PRADA’s extraordinary artwork dedicated to the company’s visionary design philosophy. Contents include the PRADA Fall/Winter 2008 Lookbook, new PRADA animation films dedicated to the PRADA Phone by LG, and wallpapers illustrating principal themes from PRADA’s annual design collections dating back to 2001.

This time around, LG and PRADA reinvents mobile trend with another stunning offering, the ‘PRADA Link’ (Model: LG-LBA-T950). Expected to release with the new handset, this sleek and elegantly packaged digital timepiece is a Bluetooth device that can remotely monitor phone calls as well as read full SMS text messages without having to extract the phone from a bag or pocket. Extending the handset’s luxurious exterior beyond the device itself is a new wearable type accessory; the PRADA Link not only revolutionizes the conventional methods of mobile communication, but adds practicality and convenience to a fashionable statement.
The new PRADA Phone by LG and the PRADA Link will be available with a starting price of 600 Euros and 299 Euros, respectively. The products can be purchased through major mobile dealerships in the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, and other countries in Europe.

For the second time in 10 years our cabin in the Pennsylvania mountains was struck by lightning. And for the second time in 10 years walls had to be opened and the house rewired before it could be usable once again. Not fun at all. (And that is WITH a lightning box installed!)

This time, unfortunately, it wasn’t just the wiring that suffered. The casualties were numerous.
The stove has cooked its last omelet. The dishwasher has seen its last dirty dish. The washer and dryer have seen their last load of laundry. In all, the damage was both extensive and expensive.

The one bit of good news in all of this is that I had the smarts to put a heavy duty power surge strip in the media cabinet and, as a result, the TV, stereo, and a WiFi router survived.

A few weeks ago Tributaries sent me two of their power strips to review. My mountain-top experience has made me truly appreciate these unsexy devices and I am impressed by the company’s ability to take such a boring item and come up with a significant innovation. So many of today’s electronics have such massive adapters that they often block a significant portion of the available plugs on any given power strip. What good is a ten outlet strip if only 6 of them are actually usable?
