Ora Unica tells time with changing scribbles

With the availability of cool mobile phones, some people no longer bother to have a watch since they can just look into the screen of their phone and see what time it is. Presently, though not in general, wearing a watch is more of a fashion material used to make one’s appearance more stylish than a gadget used to indicate time.

This scenario is seen by Denis Guidone and it gave him the idea to design a watch. He called his work Ora Unica which means “one hour” in English. The watch is not like the watches we usually know. It does not have hour, minute and seconds hands and it is also not digital. All it shows is a quirky scribble. According to Guidone, time can be distinguished just by looking at the single line drawn on the two circular faces where one is inside the other. The image shows the faces resembling gestures that change as time goes by.

This design was recognized at the Adamo Eva International Design Competition. It was awarded as the first place.

I have to say, it might be tricky telling the correct time using this watch.

Judging by the amount of mods already available for Acer's contribution to the netbook world, we'd say there's a fair amount of things folks would like changed on the Aspire One. Of course, that's not to say the machine isn't worthy of praise as-is, but there's nothing wrong with a little dreaming. Would you have preferred a 6-cell battery right out of the box? Is that touchpad a touch too small for your chubby fingertips? Would you rather it run a little less like Zune Guy and more like Usain Bolt? With the sudden surge in competition in this sector, there's really no excuse for a poor showing -- let Acer know exactly what you really wanted from the tiniest Aspire.

TSMC to replace PHS with 3G for internal communication

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is planning to change its internal communication system, replacing the currently used PHS system established by NEC with a 3G system to be selected based on an open bidding. Leading telecoms carriers in Taiwan are preparing to participate in the competition, according to industry sources.

TSMC has neither confirmed nor denied the speculation.

The 3G system needed by TSMC should be low power in order to minimize electromagnetic interference, the sources indicated. In addition, the supporting 3G handsets are required to not have a camera or memory card interface, the sources noted.

TSMC's open bid is expected to be very attractive to telecoms carriers. Winning the bid with the semicon giant will open up business opportunities from other potential customers.

Nokia lowers its third quarter 2008 mobile device market share outlook

Espoo, Finland - Nokia today updated its mobile device market share outlook for the third quarter 2008. Nokia now expects its mobile device market share in the third quarter 2008 to be lower than in the second quarter 2008. This compares to Nokia's earlier estimation provided in the second quarter results announcement on July 17, 2008, when the company said it expected its mobile device market share in the third quarter 2008 to be approximately at the same level sequentially.

Nokia continues to target an increase in its market share in mobile devices for the full year 2008.

Nokia expects the overall mobile device market in 2008 to be impacted by the weaker consumer confidence in multiple markets. However, Nokia continues to expect industry mobile device volumes in 2008 to grow 10% or more from the approximately 1.14 billion units Nokia estimated for 2007. Nokia also continues to expect industry mobile device volumes in the third quarter 2008 to be up sequentially.

Nokia's current estimate that its mobile device market share in the third quarter 2008 will be lower than previously expected is due to multiple factors. These factors include Nokia's tactical decision to not meet certain aggressive pricing of some competitors, the overall market competition, including the entry markets, and the temporary impact of a slower ramp-up of a mid-range Nokia device. Nokia's strategy is to take market share only when the company believes it to be sustainably profitable in the longer term. Nokia has not broadly participated in the recent aggressive pricing activity - as it believes that the negative impact to profitability would outweigh any short term incremental benefits to device unit sales.

We expect the product launches and start of shipments to be on track during the remainder of the third quarter and the fourth quarter 2008. Driven by its new products and services, Nokia continues to believe its product portfolio will be very attractive for the rest of the year.

Nokia will report its third quarter 2008 results on October 16, 2008.

Poker Bots have the skills in poker you might wish you have

Has your luck in poker run out already? Well, with the Poker Bot, that will never be a problem.

In Texas, a program focusing in poker has been made and it is called Polaris. It is a hold ‘em poker playing program which was developed by a computer poker research group at the University of Alberta. The Polaris program is composed of several robots like HyperBorean07 which is the winner of the limit equilibrium series held in the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence Computer Poker Competition. The Polaris software also has defeated professional pokers such as Nick Grudzien and Ijay Palansky.

The software in the poker bots contain variations of fixed poker strategies and an adaptive component that lays out the play of the opponent and picks the best strategy to be used against the opponent. In the poker competition which the Poker Bot joined, each match was comprised of five hundred hands and the Polaris received the cards in a room while the professional players received the same cards in a separate room. That set-up is called the duplicate system where the aspect of luck is lessened and skill is the main determining factor.

GSMA Announces 2009 Global Mobile Awards & Mobile Innovation Global Competition

The GSMA announced that entries are invited for the 2009 Global Mobile Awards and the penultimate round of its Mobile Innovation Global Competition, both of which will be presented at the mobile industry's biggest annual event, the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on 17th February 2009.

The GSMA's Global Mobile Awards are a unique platform for companies in the mobile industry to gain truly independent recognition for their work.

This year's awards incorporate several new categories including a new 'Green Mobile' Award (highlighting eco-friendly mobile products, services and initiatives), Best Mobile Internet, Best Mobile TV Service and Best Mobile Money Service.

The Best Mobile Technology categories have been refreshed to ensure they capture the wealth of creativity and imagination in the mobile industry. Categories of Mobile Entertainment, Mobile Services, and Best Mobile Handset, are already established as highly desirable awards for any new product or service.

Coolest Gadgets for August 2008

IDG News selects the best gizmos for 8/8, so you don’t have to…

Their lead-off item is the Toyota Winglet, which was introduced 8/01/2008 and is “personal transport assistance robot ridden in a standing position”. The Winglet seems to be ~~knock off~~ er, improvement on the Segway. Actually the Winglet is considerably lighter and smaller than the Segway but carries a reduced payload - think of it as Segway-lite.

Second-up is Sony TransferJet, the high-speed (375 Mbps), short-range (3cm) wireless data transfer system. The TransferJet Consortium hopes to have the thing working by 2009. …some competition for Wireless USB.

The list gets a bit lame after that, but they redeem themselves at the end by including the well-regarded MSI Wind Netbook. What’s not to like about the Wind U100? - its small, light, got the Intel Atom processor, 1024×600 display with LED backlight, and comes in Noble Red, Angel White, Empire Black or Romantic Pink. Now with a 6-cell battery.

Spore Origins due to hit iPhone this week, likely a let down

Spore hit the Apple Keynote stage all those months ago to show iPhone 3G hopefuls what kind of gaming experience to expect on the iPhone 3G and iPhones running the iPhone 2.0 OS. Spore Origins, alongside Sega’s Super Monkey Ball, promised to usher the iPhone and iPhone 3G into the world of mobile gaming.

Unfortunately, the initial release of the Spore Origins game was only compatible with the iPod. More unfortunate is the fact that Spore Origins doesn’t offer character transfer or online play. Spore Origins will essentially spin-off of the Spore game title, offering little more amusement than guiding your Spore creature through a primordial soup filled with smaller-than-you food creatures and larger-than-you predators. The goal will be to feed on smaller creatures while running away from larger predators.

Spore Origins is expected to launch on the AppStore later this week for $5. Were the game more integrated in to the Spore parent-game, Spore Origins would have a larger potential audience. As it stands, we’ll have to wait and see how the game fares against the competition.

Creating a new gadget website

I’m working on a new gadget website a dedicated gadget for boys site.

One of my projects is to make a new gadgets site. I have already 10 Wordpress blogs so I want to do something different. I want to make a marketing test to see if a HTML site ranks better than a WordPress one.

I’m oscillating between using Flash or not. There are voices who claim the flash is not correctly indexed and read by search engine spiders. Other people say the search engines have improved and read and index flash pages ok.

All will be up for the template. I’m not a very good designer and I have to work after templates. I want to look for a free template first, but if I can’t find a good one I will pay for a good template.
So let me resume if I will find a flash site which I will like I will use it if not I will use a simple HTML site.

On Dreamtemplate.com I found a free website template which I like. You can see it here . The template uses the colors red which call to action, blue which means calm, peace and is recommended for business and the background is white which makes reading easy. The header image must be changed but with a little of attention and a little of luck I think I can make a decent header. If not there are always sites like get a coder, rent a coder and elance to get custom images.

This template is free for members. I like it but not very, very much. I wonder if it worth paying $59.95 and access to thousands of new templates. To pay almost 60 dollars for one template is a little expensive since this is the only HTML site I want to do for now.

I will get the thousands of templates and pay the fee. After all I can use the templates for later projects.

Of course what it matters the most are the back links. No links back to your site => no Google top ten positions unless you use longtail keywords with almost zero competition. So I will try to get as many back links as I can from different sources like: general directories, niche directories, article directories, blogs, forums and others.

The site will contain only gadgets for boys and toys for boys like: games consoles, RC helicopters, fast remote control cars and others.
