I don’t mean that BenQ used a person called Tim to launch the S6 (though they may have had someone of that name working on the launch), no, no, no - BenQ have launched the Mobile Internet Device called the S6 with Italian Operator TIM!

There is an Intel Atom processor inside, along with 4.8″ screen, and 370g of weight to account for. 3.5G and WLAN radios are onboard for InterWeb access, and Bluetooth even makes an appearance!

Apparently the cost will be 429 EUR, which isn’t too harsh, although it is going to have to compete with the increasingly popular netbooks at that price point.

You can check out BenQ’s info on the S6 here.

It is a very handy and portable projector that features technology from 3M and is capable of projecting a 50” image.

The mini projector can be used for playing photos and videos directly from Wii, iPod, cell phone or any media devices by means of a 3-in-1 AV jack. Aside from direct streaming, it also displays media from its 1GB of internal memory or an SD, MMC or MS Pro card. It works for any formats like AVI, JPEG, ASF and MPEG-4 and has a built-in battery and stereo speaker.

It can be used for video streaming and presentations. Whether you want to watch a movie in a bigger screen or just delivering a report that needs some visual support in your class, the PocketCinema V10 mini projector can help you. You certainly won’t be having trouble in carrying the device because of its small size unlike the present projector that most of us are using.

Together with the PocketCinema V10 mini projector, Aiptek also showcased their Mona Lisa picture frame with a built-in digital camera.

While MSI's 8.9-inch Wind U90 first made an appearance in June at Computex, it took MSI this long to flesh out all details -- which is actually a relief, given the ridiculous quantity of Eee PC SKUs ASUS has managed to pump out in the meantime. We just got to handle the new laptop, and we think MSI might have a winner here. The laptop is shipping with SUSE Linux exclusively to start, with an XP version in the works, and boots quite rapidly to the full OS. SUSE has never looked better, and we think these two might be quite the pair. MSI has kept the full keyboard of the 10-inch Wind, and merely bumped up the bezel while cutting the price; all the other specs are the same. MSI is planning on shipping this at the end of September or beginning of October for 339 Euro (no word on a US release), and is also working on a six cell battery to fix the paltry 2 hours of battery the Wind currently gets from the three cell.

Gallery: MSI's 8.9-inch Wind U90 in the flesh, Linux version shipping for 339 Euro

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Back in June, we saw E-Ten announcing four cool smartphones. After almost six months, the handset maker said it will soon release two of the four devices - Glofiish X610 and Glofiish V900.

The first one, X610, is a 2.5G smartphone running Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional edition. Designed for the emerging marketing, the device doesn’t exactly boasts high-end specs. Still, there’s a 2.8-inch QVGA touchscreen, 128 MB Flash ROM and 64 MB SDRAM, quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE radio, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, WiFi, FM radio, 2 megapixel camera and a GPS. Samsung’s SC3 2442 CPU at 400 MHz is providing all the processing power needed.

On the other hand, the Glofiish V900 is a mobile TV ready device. Aside from the DVB-T receiver, the stylish, 3G-enabled (triband UMTS/HSDPA) smartphone packs a 2.8-inch VGA touchscreen, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, WiFi, FM radio, 3 megapixel camera that can record videos at VGA resolution and a GPS. This time, Samsung’s more powerful CPU at at 533 MHz is in charge.

Pricing is not known at this stage, and the same goes for the exact release date. Stay tuned…

Recently I have had chance to have “extreme possession” of the MS800 device from Gigabyte (labelled under the “G-Smart” brand). Below are some brief highlights, pointer to the specs, and the G-Smart website itself:

Initial impressions were that the G-Smart devices come in a professionally put-together set of packaging. Included are in-car charger, USB cable, spare pointer, instructions, wired stereo headset, and multi-country component mains charger - a nice set of accessories. A case wouldn’t have got amiss, but it’s not a showstopper

The device itself is well-made - nice construction, and plenty of time and effort obviously spent avoiding the serious “creak” problems that many plastic-bodied devices have:

The O/S is WinMo 6 Pro - on top of this G-Smart have layered their “Smart Touch UI”, which is another attempt to make a finger-based input possible, rather than using a Stylus:

This isn’t entirely a success - whilst it is quite well-integrated with the traditional Win Homescreen, when you are utilising the carousel, it doesn’t react as accurately as you might expect. Compared to a certain “i” device, it’s not in the same league.

On the upside however, it’s fitted with a SiRF Star III GPS system, has HSDPA, a 2.8″ screen, 2MP camera, and also Mini-USB, Bluetooth 2.0, and WLAN b+g. Oh, and a Micro SD slot!

So overall then, I would see this as a nice business device - it’s understated, has a good suite of functions, and is well-built. Unfortunately it is not currently carried by any of the Operators in the UK, which means you’ll need to buy it outright. Speaking of which, you can find the list of stores carrying the MS800 here.
