Jason Calacanis told CNET's Nate Lanxon that "he knew first-hand that Apple was working on a networked television." From Nate's blog:

These LCD HDTVs will be fully networked, with the ability to stream all your iTunes content from your Mac or PC. In fact, Calacanis told me they'll function like a standard TV with an Apple TV box, only without the need for the box.
In many ways, this isn't surprising news, as Apple already produces a stunning 30-inch display for the Mac. So picture that -- only thinner -- in a bedroom, streaming iTunes movie rentals over 802.11n, controlled with the Remote app on an iPod touch or iPhone.

To which I have nothing to add, except that televisions with web/content browsers in them are obviously the future.

It looks like there’s no manufacturer which doesn’t have a touch screen anymore. Verizon Wireless, Vodafone and RIM recently announced the first touchscreen Blackberry, Blackberry Strom 9500.

Blackberry always has been distinguished by their effective e-mail handling for which a physical keyboard is almost essential. Blackberry Storm will try to demonstrate if they have been able to transport this experience to a touch screen phone.

Evidently the focus point of this device is its touch screen, that has a size of 3.25 inches, and a resolution of 480×360 pixels. Blackberry Storm incorporates haptic technology which provides user feedback by means of a small vibration when the screen is in use, besides illuminating the corresponding key so that we also have a visual indication.

Its sensor of ambient light, that we have already seen in other models will automatically fit the brightness of the screen for an optimal visuals and less battery consumption. The accelerometer allows the device to rotate the screen automatically for us when the device is turned. Another important feature is the multitouch screen…

Blackberry Storm has three different keyboards, two in vertical way and one in horizontal. We already had opportunity to see it, but we remember that the qwerty keyboard only appears when we have the Storm in a horizontal position.

We figured out if it in vertical, it offers two different options. First is the SureType keyboard; same as the one that is already in use with Pearl, while second is a “typical” with multiple letters in each key.

As far as multimedia Blackberry Storm has a of 3.2MP camera in addition to the ability to record videos.

In order to store content you’ll have to use microSD memory cards which is supported up to 16 GB. You can listed to all your music on your card either with an earphone through the 3.5mm audio jack or wireless with a bluetooth headset.

And don’t forget the phone and network features of Blackberry storm. It supports 3G with HSDPA support.

However the main reason why Blackberry Storm is on Navigadget is because of its GPS receiver. With that you will be able to use applications like Google Maps, besides associating each picture taken with its location. And we’re sure there will be some dynamic turn-by-turn navigation application.

Blackberry storm has a battery of 1400mAh which lasts 6 hours in conversation and up to 15 days in stand-by mode.

At face value, "1080p high definition" means 1920×1080 pixels presented progressive scan (all at once). But if a clip is 1080p that alone doesn't necessitate that it will look good. Just as you can stretch a thumbnail in Photoshop to any gargantuan size you like, so too can content providers give you ugly 1080p.

So when Dish Network announced premium 1080p VOD that they compared to Blu-ray quality, we were more than a little skeptical. Sound & Vision was as well, which is exactly why they sat down with a Dish and Blu-ray version of Speed Racer to compare:

DISH 1080p immediately impressed me. Speed Racer's brilliant colors and intricate details looked fantastic whether I was watching the satellite or the disc. Flipping back and forth between the two sources while sitting at a normal viewing distance, I could detect only subtle differences. In fact, I couldn't be sure I was seeing any difference at all...From the way-too-intimate viewing distance of about 4 feet, I started to notice a subtle graininess in the DISH 1080p picture, especially in scenes of slow, steady motion...but the fact that there wasn't a substantial difference in picture quality between the satellite and the disc bodes well for DISH's new service.

So in other words, there's a difference between Blu-ray and Dish Network, but it's a pretty small one. So what's the catch? Only exclusive Dish VOD looks this good—most of their 1080p leaves a lot to be desired—and there won't be much of this premium content any time soon.

Still, it's good to see content providers step it up and provide 1080p content worthy of its reputation. Eager to live in the fantastical future it has prophesied, NTT DoCoMo went to CEATEC and demoed an upcoming addition to its Pocket U service: MH2H (Mobile Home to Home), which gives you the ability use your cellphone to stream content from your computer at home to a friend's TV. The phone connects to your friend's WiFi network and sends his or her DLNA-compliant receiver the IP address of your also-DLNA-compliant server, then tells said server to accept the connection and start streaming any videos, songs, or photos you feel like sharing. When you leave, the connection ends and every one goes back to partying on their own isolated media islands like it's 2006.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

New Versions of BlackBerry Java Development Environment and BlackBerry Smartphone Simulators Support Innovative Mobile Application Development

Waterloo, ON - Research In Motion (RIM) (Nasdaq: RIMM; TSX: RIM) announced the availability of new developer tools for creating and testing innovative, mobile-savvy applications for the BlackBerry® Storm™, BlackBerry® Bold™ and BlackBerry® Pearl™ Flip smartphones.

The developer tools include new versions of the BlackBerry® Java® Development Environment (BlackBerry JDE) that enable the streamlined development of mobile applications, as well as desktop simulators for the BlackBerry Storm, BlackBerry Bold and BlackBerry Pearl Flip smartphones that accelerate mobile application testing. The new BlackBerry JDE versions and simulators are available as free downloads at www.blackberry.com/developers and will be showcased at the BlackBerry Developer Conference (www.blackberrydeveloperconference.com) on October 20-22, 2008 in Santa Clara, California.

BlackBerry JDE v4.7, available today in public beta, enables mobile application development for BlackBerry Device Software v4.7 which runs on the new BlackBerry Storm smartphone. It includes the ability to develop an application that works seamlessly on both touch-screen and keyboard based BlackBerry smartphones. New APIs available with BlackBerry JDE v4.7 that enable developers to take advantage of the new features of the BlackBerry Storm smartphone include:

•Touch-Screen Support – Allow applications with custom user interfaces to receive input from taps, slides and other gestures on a BlackBerry Storm smartphone.
•Orientation and Rotation Support – Enable an application to support portrait and landscape orientations and re-draw the screen when the BlackBerry Storm smartphone is rotated.
•Accelerometer Support – Enable 360 degree motion sensing for advanced gaming applications and other motion-sensitive applications.
•Virtual Keyboard Control – Control when a virtual keyboard is visible to the user within an application, and when the user can show or hide a keyboard within specified screens.
•Camera and Media Integration – Build camera and video recording capabilities into a custom application and add a "Send to" menu option that enables photos or recorded videos to be sent from within the custom application.
•Set Homescreen Background Image – Enable an application to set the background image on a BlackBerry smartphone’s home screen.
BlackBerry JDE v4.6, now generally available, enables mobile application development for BlackBerry Device Software v4.6 which currently runs on the BlackBerry Bold and BlackBerry Pearl Flip smartphones. The following APIs are introduced in BlackBerry JDE v4.6 and are also available with BlackBerry JDE v4.7:

•Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) – Create compelling interactive graphical interfaces, drawings and animation using vector-based 2D graphics.
•Location-Based Services (LBS) – Use the Locator API to add LBS capabilities to mobile applications.
•Multimedia Integration – Embed audio and video playback in a mobile application and enable the application to capture images using a BlackBerry smartphone’s camera.
•Customized Messages and Alerts – Create an integrated experience between a mobile application and a BlackBerry smartphone by displaying custom information directly in a message list or on the home screen. Application messages can appear in BlackBerry Messenger or other instant messaging applications. Alerts appear as indicator icons on the home screen banner and on the external LCD of a BlackBerry Pearl Flip smartphone.
•Multiple Calendar and Contact List Support – Enable a mobile application to access a secondary calendar and contact list databases for users that wish to connect their BlackBerry smartphone to both a BlackBerry® Enterprise Server installation at work and a BlackBerry® Unite!™ installation at home.
•Time Zone Enhancements – Enable mobile applications dependent on time zone information to access, display, retrieve and set time zone information.
•Décor Enhancements – Control visual properties of a user interface.
•SMS & MMS Listener – Set applications to automatically update content or alter the progress of a function based on preset criteria that can be triggered by SMS and MMS messages.
In addition to the new APIs, developers can also take advantage of new features for the development of browser-based mobile applications, including improved web page rendering with AJAX, JavaScript® 1.5, CSS 2.1, DOM L2 (including Core, HTML, Style, Events) and HTML 4.01 (including Forms, Maps, Tables, Frames, Objects), as well as support for downloading files via the browser.

Desktop simulators for the BlackBerry Storm, BlackBerry Bold and BlackBerry Pearl Flip smartphones accelerate mobile application development by enabling developers to easily test the end-to-end user experience and wireless network interactivity of their mobile applications.

"The latest versions of the BlackBerry Java Development Environment present developers with opportunities to create innovative, mobile-savvy applications that take advantage of the robust feature sets of the BlackBerry Storm, BlackBerry Bold and BlackBerry Pearl Flip smartphones," said Alan Brenner, Senior Vice President, BlackBerry platforms at Research In Motion.

Slingbox has just released yet another device for the living room, and this time round, this is a universal media player that will deliver broadcast TV, Internet video and personal content to the TV seamlessly. Fact of the matter is this - the SlingCatcher could eventually end up to be one of the more flexible Internet video devices released in recent memory. Slingbox did go as far as to describe the SlingCatcher being able to stream video from network TV sites such as ABC.com, videon content sites like Hulu.com and CollegeHumor.com, and community video sites such as YouTube.com. With a whole lot of videos for you to view, it makes me wonder whether you will have the time to watch all of them or not, or will it be relegated to certain dusty sectors of your hard drive in due time, ever waiting for “tomorrow” before it is viewed.

One of the most striking features about the SlingCatcher is its ability to hook up to video rental store Netflix, letting you stream movies straight onto your TV as though you were a subscriber to the service, but being the end user, you won’t be able to see anything that happens on the back end as long as the front end segment works fine and dandy, eh? Each SlingCatcher will come with a remote control that enables access and control of virtually any device hooked up to the SlingBox. some of these compatible devices include a DVR, Cable or Satellite set-top box. The good news is this - you don’t have to place the connected device in the same room, as it will work in a different room, another house or even from a remote location. With the addition of a USB port, you can connect a USB hard drive or flash drive to playback video media stored, including home videos, downloaded movies and other content. Native file format support consists of WMV, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264 and XviD, but you can add it extra format support for AVI, VOB, IFO, MPG, MOV and WMA.

Slingbox’s SlingCatcher will retail for $300 and works with both standard definition and high definition outputs. You getting one?

Designer Liberty Fearns has come up with the Twinned MP3 player that requires two devices to join up in order to function as a solitary unit. The moment you decide to break them apart, they can still function as standalone MP3 players, but the playlist in each of them will be identical to each other, forever. According to Liberty Fearns, “Twinned MP3 players which will play exactly the same music at any time. The unit must first be snapped in half in order to become functional, creating a formal ritual shared between two people. Music is uploaded to a shared online play list, which will only download new music when both MP3 players are in their docks, so that audio content always remains the same. Users build a soundtrack to their relationship, like a growing mixtape." Sounds like something only couples would purchase if it ever was released.
