Conceived after visiting a children’s hospital in Jerusalem, designer Shabtai Hirshberg created the A2B trike so disabled kids could mount and ride by themselves. When a child mounts the trike, stepping on the pedal locks the wheels, enabling the child to literally walk right into a seated position. The chest support keeps the child stabilized, and the whole trike can be customized to each child’s needs. The gear based rear wheel makes it easy for the child to pedal since less force is required to drive the system. The entire steering shaft is cable driven so very small movements translate into larger movements.

If you’re wondering why disabled children are riding trikes, it’s more than a recreational activity. Hospitals around the world use it for rehabilitation, promoting independence, muscle development, and balance.

Imagine being blind for a minute, and you have to go to the store to pick up a few things. You have everything in your basket ready to be checked out and since you have no cash in your pocket, you whip out the old trustworthy debit card. However, since debit/credit card machines have pretty much gone all digital, you will have to trust the clerk to help you with entering your private information. Yeah, pretty scary huh? Kyle Lechtenberg, an Industrial Design grad from Auburn University - WAR EAGLE! - placed himself in the shoes of the visually impaired and has created the Visual Assistance Card. The card lays on top of the debit/credit card reader and through the use of Braille imprinted on the card, the user is able to keep their personal information private thus increasing their independence while shopping in any store. The Visual Assistance Card is light weight and can be easily stored out of the way until future use. Definitely designed for usability - a must in today’s world.

The Experience Recorder: here lies not only the possibility of near-perfect microblogging, but also a new meaning to the journalistic ideal of Total Coverage. The experience recorder fits on the hand and records not only photos, but sounds, movement, video, and temperature. Here you can experience the whole objective reality of a person’s experience! And, most important, it comes in a totally hot Fresh Prince color scheme!

The Experience Recorder’s designer Valeria Fuso chooses to don this product with the quote “Non si progettano prodotti, bensi comportamenti”, as spoken by the man called Godfather of Italian Design, Achille Castiglioni.*

*This quote translates roughly into “Design not just products; design behavior.” For those who love Industrial Design, please investigate Achille Castiglion; if you already know who he is, well done!

This Experience Recorder has a movement sensor, audio recorder, still-image camera, video camera, thermometer, and wireless computer connection. The Experience Recorder can record on auto mode, deciding on its own which information to collect, or on manual mode. While in manual mode, the user must activate the Experience Recorder through sensors in the fingers of the glove. For instance, if the user of the Experience Recorder is in manual mode and wishes to record video, they make their fingers into an O shape, and look through the newly formed finger-viewfinder to see what will be recorded (see pictures below to see what I mean).

I cannot help but fear such a Small Brother of a device, but the thought of “experiencing” events and places I might never get to experience otherwise- well, that’s awesome.

This clever little cycloptic concept by South Korean industrial designer Jin Woo Han is a combination computer and projector: a tiny Wind PC sized home theater box perfect for tucking under the arm and lugging around. The projector nestles into the concavity of the chassis top: surround sound is outputed through speakers built-in to the side. Conceptual, of course, which means it is forged of ganja during designer fever dreams, but it is often nice to peek through the occulus of a parallel world on these slower newsdays.

A few days ago, we covered the Suunto X10, a GPS device that fits on your wrist. While there may not be a huge market for the GPS on the wrist, some concept designer apparently has a plan for a wrist GPS boom.

The designer, Jukka Roitto, has taken the wrist GPS one step further by putting a search engine and navigation guide on his concept model, which he has dubbed the Seek. The name may be simple, but what the Seek does is pretty complex.

The Seek is meant to help a person look for local attractions in an area, such as theaters, restaurants, or clubs. So, if you’re in a strange new town, and you’re looking for a place to eat or have fun, just Seek and you will find!

The user interacts with the Seek with a full touchscreen. I have seen other photos of the Seek that have the touchscreen retracted, but I don’t see how it could, unless they are using that new LED screen technology that can somehow roll up.

There are other functions that the Seek has, such as a Portable Music Player. In fact, it can even give the name and artist of the track, and I think I see a place for a headphone jack.

Well, this is a concept product for now, so one cannot say if any of these features will ever come to pass. You got to admit that the Seek looks very futuristic, like something you would see in a classic science fiction movie.
