DLO's has leapt into the world of High Definition with the HomeDock HD Pro. This dock will be on display at CEDIA Expo 2008, allowing clients to view iPod content on their HDTV, although you wouldn't really get great looking movies since the iPod's resolution is way below High Definition standards. It will receive upconversion treatment from the HomeDock HD Pro though, touching base with 1080i or 720p via an HDMI connection, but that isn't good enough compared to native HD resolutions. Other features include IR output for compatibility with universal remotes as well as enhanced on-TV interface for easier navigation. No idea on pricing, but the DLO HomeDock HD Pro will be out this fall.

The Homedock HD Pro is an upscaler dock that can add 1080i or 720p output to your iPod through an HDMI cable to your TV, and it's going to be demoed at the upcoming CEDIA Expo show. It's got "industry standard connectivity" over RS-232 and I.P., with digital optical audio and an IR receiver so you can bolt it into your media setup and control it with universal IR remotes. Better still the dock has an "enhanced on-TV interface" which "features album art in an icon-based format," which makes it sound like a mini AppleTV. There's no pricing info as yet. One thing's for sure: DLO's pretty attached to its HomeDock brand, and evidently it could care less about just how confusing these naming schemes are to customers. Let's clear some cobwebs real quick -- this isn't the HomeDock Pro, nor is it the HomeDock HD. Rather, it's the HomeDock HD Pro, a glorious combination of the two (or something). Aimed at home theater enthusiasts and home installers alike, this upscaling iPod dock takes stored content to 720p or 1080i over HDMI, and you'll also find an HDMI extension socket, optical digital audio port, RS-232 control connector and IR output for supporting universal remotes. Expect this one to set you back $399 when it arrives this fall. Full release after the jump.

Last year, Switched On discussed the KeySpan TuneView and the DLO HomeDock Remote, two products that allowed remote control of an iPod using small screens on a remote. One of the limitations of those products was that they each required their own docks instead of working with any of the scores of iPod docks already on the market. At CES 2008, though, a company showed a product that not only allows you to use your iPod -- and many other devices -- as a wireless remote with the iPod dock you may already have. Even more unusually, the company that sells it is not one well associated with these speaker docks, such as Altec Lansing, Bose or Logitech, but rather It is iSkin, a company that made its name selling silicone cases for iPods.

iSkin's music product line is called Cerulean, the most flexible configuration of which is the $129 TX+RX (transmitter / receiver). The transmitter, like those bundled with iPod wireless headphones for years, allows you to use your iPod as a remote, sending music to any Bluetooth stereo speaker. But not only does Cerulean free the iPod from the dock, it frees the dock from the iPod.

Plugging the Cerulean Bluetooth receiver into practically any iPod dock opens a door for many Bluetooth stereo music sources -- such as MacBooks and notebook PCs, digital music players from Sony and Samsung, and many cell phones. When used with a subscription service such as Rhapsody, the Cerulean lets you create playlists from thousands of songs or listen to YouTube music videos on your notebook with better audio quality, but there's even one more trick up its sleeve.
Continue reading Switched On: From Bluetooth to the bedroom and the backyard

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Apparently, some sleuthing around by Macnn has resulted in the unearthing of the rumored iPhone nano. It looks rather strange at first glance, and don’t you think that it would be better to have a reversible design with the clickwheel located on one side along with the secondary display while the large touch screen is on the other side? Whatever the end result is, what you see above could most likely be it since DLO (a famous third party accessory manufacturer for all things Apple) have been working on a nano-styled iPhone dock since a couple of years back. Patience is the keyword here, so all we need to do is sit and wait.

The folks at Macnn could possibly have stumbled upon the rumored iPhone nano's design, and here's their take on it.

Yet the UK rumor may still have some legs when you consider that a prominent Apple iPod and iPhone accessories company by the name of Digital Lifestyle Outfitters (DLO) has been working on a nano-styled iPhone dock, illustrated here, since 2006.

It would be interesting to see what the final shape is like, considering the fact that Apple has always been pretty darn good at swearing their employees to secrecy although later products seem to get leaked much more often compared to the initial iPods.

Looking to pimp up that boring new iPhone 3G of yours?

Here’s the list of my favorite iPhone 3G accessories available on the market:

1. B&W Zeppelin Speakers for iPhone 3G

These beautiful speakers from Bowers & Wilkins were released late last year. At the time we weren’t sure that they would support the iPhone 3G. Now that the iPhone 3G has been released we can confirm that they work seamlessly together. Check out the iPhone Speakers / B&W Zeppelin video which demonstrates this.

2. Plantronics Discovery 925 Bluetooth Headset

The Plantronics Discovery 925 is the best bluetooth headset I have played with to date. I know, I know there’s a lot of buzz about the new Aliph Jawbone but until I get my hands on one, the Plantronics Discovery 925 is my suggested iPhone bluetooth headset. Also waiting for Blueant’s Z9i to hit my desk!

3. Sennheiser MM iP iPhone Stereo / Mobile Headphones

The first high quality music headset for the iPhone. Upgraded music quality to take and make calls. Tailor-made for the iPhone.

4. Parrot Minikit Slim Bluetooth Speakerphone

The new Parrot MINIKIT SLIM Bluetooth Speakerphone is packed with innovative features, including nxt SuperSound technology which gives the MINIKIT SLIM it’s sleek ultra-slim design. One of its most impressive and useful features however is the automatic phone book synchronization with text-to-speech voice synthesis.

5. Mr.Gadget iPhone 3G Screen Protector

Huge glass screen display, susceptible to scratches and the like, needs protection. Our Mr.Gadget iPhone 3G screen protectors cover the full screen and also come with a life-time warranty. Can’t go wrong.

6. DLO iPhone 3G Car Charger

We all know that battery life is an issue with both old and new version of the iPhone. So instead of whinging let’s do something practical to keep it energized throughout the day, like with the DLO iPhone 3G Car Charger!

7. DLO iPhone 3G Portable Speakers

Whether you’re at school, in the office or in the park, you can now share your music with your friends and the rest of the world. One neat trick about these speakers is that, once you’re done, you can fold them up into a ball. Not sturdy enough to play soccer with, I’m afraid.

8. XStand for iPhone 3G

Why settle for a boring desk stand when you can have an Xstand to hold up your iPhone 3G? Its named is derived from its contemporary “X” design and complements the curves of the phone to provide secure desktop support.

9. DLO Sports Action Jacket iPhone 3G Case

For those fitness buffs who want to securely carry around their iPhones while doing exercise, the DLO iPhone 3G Sports Action Jacket Case is perfect.

10. Dexim BluePack Battery Packfor iPhone

Another way to keep your iPhone topped-up, this time without the aid of a free AC power point handy, is with the Dexim BluePack Battery Pack for iPhone. With one of these gadgets attached, you can enjoy another 30+ hours of audio bliss or 3+ hours of talk time. Well worth considering buying and just keeping in your bag.

There are a couple more that I would’ve liked to add, but these are my top 10. Keen to hear what else you thought I should have added here!

Besides the quality leather build, I like the inbuilt card holder! I now have no need for a separate wallet as I store my cards and some money all in the one unit! Wouldn’t recommend storing memory cards though as they may slip through…

It clips securely to my belt and keeps your iPhone 3G in place with the velcro-shut flip cover.

I’m use this on a daily basis and give this full thumbs up! Highly recommend the DLO HipCase for iPhone 3G!

Another iPhone launch, another generation of multi-colored condoms, holsters and other miscellaneous polycarbonate crap designed to waste your time and drain your money. As the accessory market for the first-gen iPhone aptly demonstrated, there's seems to be no limit to the gimmicky, over-the-top and flat out useless accessories companies can conjure up for the device. And while it's still early in the 3G game, here's our short list of products whose very existence angers us. We have a strange feeling this list will grow exponentially in the coming months. —Bryan Gardiner

[Editor's note: we've assigned each accessory an A-F grade with "A" being excellent and "F " being your standard epic fail.]

1. The DLO VideoShell

Part see-through protective case, part 3G iPhone kickstand, the VideoShell saves you the trouble of actually holding your new iPhone, all 4.7 ounces of it. DLO says the stand/case will work on any flat surface. It

Grade: Lazy, transparent, and useless. Fail.

2. The iWood

If the $200 or $300 you just shelled out for the iPhone, plus the additional $160 you'll be paying over the lifetime of your AT&T contract didn't put enough of a hurting on your checking account, try Minot's iWood case. This ligneous shell costs nearly as much as the 8GB iPhone — and rumor has it, it's fashioned from Ents! Optional wood dock sold separately. Seriously we’re not making this up.

Grade: Chop down a tree to make an iPhone case? Great, I've got a car that runs on baby seal blood and bald eagles you might like. Fail.

3. Macally Privacy Screen Protective Overlay

You're an important person with an important phone…doing important things. Needless to say, you'll want some privacy while updating your Facebook profile. The Macally privacy screen overlay is just the ticket. Nosey onlookers out of the 60-degree viewing angle won't see a thing on your iPhone, including how horrible you are at Super Monkey Ball.

Grade: You suck at Super Monkey Ball, and by extension, at life. Fail.

4. Macally Mirror Finish Screen Protector

Another vanity/utility hybrid gem of an accessory from Macally; this screen protector doubles as reflective mirror when your 3G iPhone screen is turned off. Are you more beautiful than your new iPhone? Buy one and find out.

Grade: Perfect for conceited douchebags who need to signal low-flying aircraft. Fail.

$10, macally.com

5. ClipPod Car Visor and Belt Clip

Okay, this one is really an accessory for an iPhone accessory. So meta! Fifteen dollars will buy you a protective pouch for (…wait for it) your Bluetooth headset. Clip it to your belt or car visor and let everyone know how easy it is for you to throw money away.

Grade: An accessory for an accessory. What, are you trying to be ironic? No you're being an idiot. Fail.
