Over the past couple of years, Logitech developed wide range of universal remote controls, which allow users to control their entire home entertainment system from a single, central unit.

The Harmony Advanced remote from Logitech can actually replace up to 5 devices at a time, a feature that could really come in handy when you’re the owner of a large home entertainment system, formed out of several components (DVD player, HDTV, cable or satellite receiver, etc.).

The universal remote is compatible with a very large number of products, and its database can always be upgraded by connecting it to a PC via the included USB cable.

A smart feature of the Logitech Harmony is represented by the Interactive LCD with help function. This will allow users to setup their remote controls in a very fast and easy manner.

With Harmony Advanced you can control a televisions, satellite or cable box, DVD player, video recorder, digital media player, TiVo or other PVR, game console, amplifier, stereo, or even a PC or home automation setup.

The remote supports 5,000 brands and 225,000 devices.

Today Sony made the next logical step, dropping its $500 BDP-S550 to $400. It's a sizeable price decrease, and it comes well before Thanksgiving, indicating that there could easily be another sweet drop. I'm still more of a fan of the S350, though, now that both are BD-Live capable. That extra $100 for the S550 only gets you a 1GB Memory Vault ($12.99 on Amazon), a 7.1-analog output, DTS-Master Audio decoding and a light-up remote. Oh, and the product itself won't ship until the end of October when, who knows, another price cut may hit. Sherwood isn't the only little-known company bringing the Blu to CEDIA -- now we've got a boutique manufacturer joining the crowd. Announced today in Denver, Cambridge Audio has revealed that it too will be producing a BD deck in early 2009. The 640BD will be designed to complement the Azur range of AV receivers, and it will boast full HDMI 1.3 output (including bitstream output of all the latest Dolby / DTS tracks), a full set of analog video outputs, Ethernet, S/PDIF, Toslink and a set of separate, dedicated 7.1 / stereo analog outputs. Unfortunately, that's all the details the company has prepared for this year's Expo, but we'll certainly be hearing more as CES time draws near. Per usual, the full release is after the break.

Continue reading Cambridge Audio dips on in, announces 640BD Blu-ray player for 2009

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Yamaha Electronics Corporation, just yesterday introduced the YAS-71 AIR SURROUND XTREME front surround system. The system comprises of a slim front surround module, which can be neatly mounted underneath a flat panel display or on a shelf without disturbing room aesthetics, and a powered subwoofer, both with stylish, compact designs and glossy black finishes. Yamaha’s proprietary 24kHz HRTF (Head Related Transfer Function) surround technology allows listeners to hear clear dialogue and other sounds from the front, specific sounds from the other channels to the sides and rear, and smooth audio movement all around them. The YAS-71 is fully compatible with Dolby Digital, DTS and Dolby Pro Logic II to provide surround sound from all sources. It currently retails at suggested price of $599.95.
We suppose it was just a matter of time before iPod docks and HTIBs achieved some sort of unholy union, and their demonic lovechild has appeared at IFA -- say hello to the Philips CinemaOne. Essentially a mashup of an iPod speaker system, a DVD player, and a soundbar, it's designed to plug in to your flatscreen via HDMI and provide surround audio through five DSP-driven speakers and 4-inch sub, all in a package about the size of a football. The DivX-compatible DVD player seems decent, with 1080p scaling and Dolby Digital and DTS support, but even though the speakers use the same soundbar tech found in Philips' Ambisound line, we've got our doubts that this thing sounds any good -- most soundbars we've heard require a separate large sub to be effective. No pricing or release date yet, but we'd wait to actually hear this thing in person before we started to set aside spare change. Action shot after the break.
