AT&T has added a new simple 3G phone from Samsung. Aside from boasting a 3G radio, the Samsung SGH-A637 hardly impresses anyone. To be fair, there’s a 1.3 megapixel camera, 1.9-inch screen, Bluetooth, integrated GPS and microSD card slot on board. Supported services include MobiTV, Cellular Video, XM radio, AT&T Mobile Music and AT&T Navigator. And that’s about it. The device seems ideal for seniors or those who want to fall in love in modern 3G services. In the latter sense, Samsung’s candybar seems like an ideal starting point…

Asus will release a new variant of its Asus Eee-PC next year. The company will introduce the new netbook at CES next year. It will be a touch-enabled model, dual-core Atom 330 processors with the pricing aiming at a sub-$300 model. I think Asus try to compete HP and Acer in the Netbook market.

eMachines, now part of the Acer computer family based mostly in Irvine, finally offers up a PC just $2 shy of $300. It’s a 25 percent price drop from its $399 price tag that eMachines slapped onto PCs 10 years ago, which changed the entire price scene of the PC market. Until now.

Its first small desktop computer, the EL1200 Desktop Series PC, is an interesting offering for the brand, which isn’t known for its pretty PCs. But this must be different. Even the press release calls it ’stylish.”

eMachines has come out with sub $399 PCs before but those usually had lesser hardware and weren’t that interesting. The brand started in Irvine, was later acquired by Gateway, which in turn was acquired by Acer last year. eMachines and Gateway are now brands of Acer.

All I can say is - About time! eMachines should have led the latest trend of budget-priced PCs (see “Netbooks everywhere. Do consumers really want them?“). The small form factor has already been done by everyone else, including Gateway. Dell has really nice-looking ones in the $599 range.

Getting back to the latest machine … The EL1200 is “one-third the size of a traditional PC,” according to the company. It’s 40 to 55 percent lighter than eMachines smallest desktop. Yet, as with traditional eMachines, the series “pack as much computing power as most mainstream full-size towers.”

The goods?

It has a 64-bit AMD Athlon 1.5 GHz chip (OK), 1 to 2 GB of memory (can add more cheaply), NVIDIA GeForce graphics chip (not bad), 160 GB hard drive (the going rate) and a DVD SuperMulti drive with Labelflash technology (fun!)

A nice touch: a low-power 15-watt CPU that uses less energy than a standard desktop (let’s hope so).

Two versions are available now. The $298 is at Wal-Mart. The $349 version, which has a larger hard drive and faster chip, is at Best Buy.

The new eMachines EL1200 models are available now. The EL1200-05w, available at Wal-Mart, has an MSRP of $298. The EL 1210-01e can be purchased from Best Buy, and has an MSRP of $349.

Specs are after the jump:

The Samsung t109 is an entry-level cellphone in the flip mode category, measuring 3.5 x 1.8 x 0.8 inches and with an approximate weight of 85 grams. It features dual-band 850/1900 MHz GSM/EDGE, and a battery life of 4 hours in talk time, or up to 10 days in standby time.

Interestingly, the Samsung t109 is so cheap that is actually free after the discount and AT&T service agreement.

Key features of the basic phone include Instant messaging software more specifically Yahoo and AIM, a photo caller ID function so you can easily know who is calling, and a few games.

Hop-on — the company behind the so called anti-iPhone, a handset which costs mere 10 bucks — has announced an “updated version” of its super-affordable mobile phone — or that’s a new model?. The dual-band (850/1900MHz or 900/1800MHz) HOP1811 costs $13.99 with a Graffiti Wireless Airtime Plan. That is 40% increase in price, but unlike the original anti-iPhone, this device actually has a screen.

Ideal as a backup handset when traveling abroad or for anyone looking for a super-affordable mobile phone that does its thing extremely well, the pre-paid HOP1811 can be used calling and texting, only. It weighs 79 grams and its battery can sustain up to 4 hours of talk and up to 150 hours of standby time.

To further push the sales, Hop-on now allows co-branding of the HOP1811 (and other models for that matter). The idea is to offer businesses an interesting promotional item — instead of offering clients/partners a mug, pen or t-shirt - they [businesses] could offer them a mobile phone. Neat concept, don’t you think?

Really, eMachines? You're honestly going to give your newest cheap-o PC this kind of tagline? Truth be told, we're not exactly sure what a standard sized dictionary even looks like (there's this thing called the internet...), but apparently, it's exactly the same size as the EL1200 desktop. Not sassy enough to be called a nettop, this here mini-tower is 40% smaller and 55% lighter than the company's second tiniest rig, and while it won't handle the likes of Crysis, it shouldn't have too many issues surfing the web and opening Word documents. As for specs, we've got a 1.5GHz AMD Athlon 2650e 64-bit CPU, NVIDIA's GeForce 6150SE integrated graphics, 1GB of DDR2, 160GB hard drive, a dual-layer DVD burner, 14-in-1 multicard reader, seven USB 2.0 ports and a $298 (MSRP) price tag. That system we just rattled off is available now at Wally World, while a slightly more stacked edition can be had at Best Buy for $349.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

From next year, we won’t need a mod to make this real as Asus will be announcing their touch screen enabled Eee PCs at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Samson Hu, GM, Eee PC business unit talking to Digitimes revealed their future plans regarding their best selling netbook. He also pointed out a cheaper (sub-$300) and a dual-core Atom powered Eee is in the offing as soon as Intel announces the shipment date for their processors.

“The company has not yet decided details of the models which will be updated but will reach a decision based on market demand. The company expects to showcase the products during CES 2009.”

T-Mobile soon will introduce a new service and a new device for its subscribers. It is not a phone, it is not a Bluetooth headset. What is it? A Picture frame with a sim card buit in. Back on January, Parrot announced the new DF7700, a digital picture frame with a GSM sim card in it. T-Mobile USA soon will offer this service.
