MediaTek is exhibiting its WiMAX and WCDMA (W&W) chips at the 2008 Taipei International Electronics Show (Taitronics), with the WiMAX chips perhaps being mass produced at the end of 2008. WCDMA chip samples have already been sent to customers and related shipments are expected to begin in the first half of 2009. The so-called W&W chips will play an important roles for MediaTek's operation in 2009, company chairman Ming-Kai Tsai indicated.

MediaTek is also demonstrating its newest applications for Bluetooth, GPS, Blu-ray DVD, handset and DTV.

MediaTek reported consolidated September sales of NT$9.85 billion (US$304 million) up 4.19% on month, being the highest total for the company in 2008 and the second-highest in the company's history. Consolidated sales in the third quarter were NT$27.89 billion, up 25.85% compared with the second quarter and even better than the company's adjusted expectation of 22-25%. Investors expect MediaTek's earnings per share (EPS) in this quarter to challenge its high of NT$6. Its consolidated sales accumulated from January to September were NT$69.3 billion, up 16.34% on year.

Even though the weak economy may last 1-3 years in the future, MediaTek has a stronger financial base than many other industry players since it holds more than NT$30 billion in cash and has gross margins on average of higher than 53%. In addition, while other companies have announced they will cut back on staff, MediaTek is still recruiting employees.

Apple on Thursday sent out press invitations with the tease, "The spotlight turns to notebooks" -- and all signs are pointing toward the launch of a sub-$1,000 Mac notebook.

The invitation says the event will be held at the Apple headquarter's Town Hall building at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster said he was confident that Apple would be releasing a sub-$1,000 notebook. He explained that in Apple's last quarterly earnings call, the company suggested that in order to hit its gross margin guidance, it would have to release a product that's significantly lower priced than the
existing ones.

To further back Munster's theory, Inquisitr cites an Apple retail store insider who claimed seeing price sheets suggesting stores would carry an $800 laptop.

"We feel good they're going to have a sub-$1000 notebook," Munster said. "It's just been two and a half years since these [Mac notebooks] have been redesigned, so it's been long overdue."

Vijay Rakesh, a ThinkPanmure analyst, agreed it was likely that Apple would release a sub-$1,000 notebook. He said he believes this device will be Apple's netbook. Netbooks, which are low-priced, pared down laptops streamlined for internet usage, have been soaring in popularity, but Apple has yet to step into this new market.

Rakesh and Munster said it's likely Apple will release a touchscreen notebook -- the fabled "Brick" that many on the internet have squabbled about.

"It is definitely a new entry into a lower price segment," Rakesh said. "It
will probably impact their profitability, and they have expected some
lower price point products to come.... I think they are being
reactive to the lower-end netbook phenomenon, so we'll have to see how
differentiated and how attractive the new product is."

Nokia talked a bit about competitors today and was generally cool with throwing them a bone, while of course remaining confident in their own progress. For example, they respected RIM’s ability to work into the enterprise back-end while still claiming Nokia would overtake their numbers in the next couple of months thanks to a recent arrangement with Microsoft and Cisco. Similarly, Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo said of Apple, “We have a new, credible competitor in this business. You know I need to take my hat off … Of course we need to be able to respond to any competitor and we will.” When it comes to a statement like that, you can’t help but take a look at the Tube and wonder if that’s supposed to be their answer to the iPhone.

In any case, that’s the classy way to talk about competition. When announcing their Q2 earnings, RIM rebuffed the idea that the iPhone posed any threat whatsoever, which some investors thought was ignorant and downright delusional. Despite decent growth numbers, RIM’s stock took a dive following the conference call, which was further compounded by the US stock market crash. It just goes to show that attitude towards competitors can say a lot about a company.

RIM announced their quarterly results last night, and while pretty good on the whole ($2.58 billion revenue, up 15% from last quarter, 88% from last year), but their outlook for for next quarter sent the stock market in a selling frenzy. Overnight trading is seeing the stock price drop from $97.53 to around $77.80 over fears that increasing operating costs (now accounting for roughly 20% of revenue) is taking too big of a bite out of earnings.

Last quarter could have been a lot better for RIM, but the sad fact is they still haven’t launched the BlackBerry Bold in the US, their biggest market, and there was a lot of pricey product development happening during that time (Pearl 8220, Storm 9500, Javelin 8900 and ongoing Bold fixes). If rumours of an early October Bold launch on AT&T pan out and the BlackBerry Pearl 8220 makes a big splash, you’d think Q3 was looking good, but RIM’s costs are slated to increase, making things all the trickier. Personally, I remember seeing RIM’s stock at $140 this summer and wish I had bought after their 3-to-1 stock split the summer before when the price was down around $70-$80. If you’re telling me all of their upcoming handsets won’t more than make up for operating costs by the end of the year, well… that’s just crazy-talk.

The company's products for consumers, mobile professionals and businesses include Palm® Treo™ and Centro™ smartphones and Palm handheld computers, as well as software, services and accessories.

Palm products are sold through select Internet, retail, reseller and wireless operator channels throughout the world, and at Palm online stores (http://www.palm.com/store).

More information about Palm, Inc. is available at http://www.palm.com.

NON-GAAP FINANCIAL MEASURES: Palm utilizes a number of different financial measures, both GAAP and non-GAAP, in analyzing and assessing the overall business performance, for making operating decisions and for forecasting and planning future periods. Palm considers the use of non-GAAP financial measures helpful in assessing its current financial performance, ongoing operations and prospects for the future. Ongoing operations are the ongoing revenue and expenses of the business, excluding certain costs that Palm does not anticipate to recur on a quarterly basis. While Palm uses non-GAAP financial measures as a tool to enhance its understanding of certain aspects of its financial performance, Palm does not consider these measures to be a substitute for, or superior to, the information provided by GAAP financial measures. Consistent with this approach, Palm believes that disclosing non-GAAP financial measures to the readers of its financial statements provides such readers with useful supplemental data that, while not a substitute for GAAP financial measures, allows for greater transparency in the review of its financial and operational performance. In assessing the overall health of its business during the first quarters of fiscal years 2009 and 2008, Palm excluded items in the following general categories, each of which are described below:

Acquisition-related Expenses. Palm excluded amortization of intangible assets resulting from acquisitions to allow more transparent comparisons of its financial results to its historical operations, forward-looking guidance and the financial results of peer companies. In recent years, Palm has completed the acquisition of the Palm brand and the acquisition of other assets and technologies, which resulted in operating expenses that would not otherwise have been incurred. Palm believes that providing non-GAAP information for amortization of intangible assets allows the users of its financial statements to review both the GAAP expenses in the period, as well as the non-GAAP expenses, thus providing for enhanced understanding of historic and future financial results. Additionally, had Palm internally developed these intangible assets, the amortization of intangible assets would have been expensed historically, and Palm believes the assessment of its operations excluding these costs is relevant to the assessment of internal operations.

Stock-based Compensation. Palm believes that because of the variety of equity awards used by companies, varying methodologies for determining stock-based compensation and the assumptions and estimates involved in those determinations, the exclusion of non-cash stock-based compensation enhances the ability of management and investors to understand the impact of non-cash stock-based compensation on our operating results. Further, Palm believes that excluding stock-based compensation allows for a more transparent comparison of its financial results to previous periods. In addition, Palm prepares and maintains its budgets and forecasts for future periods on a basis consistent with this non-GAAP financial measure.

Income Tax Provision (Benefit). Palm believes that assuming a 40 percent annual effective tax rate on the non-GAAP operations basis provides a more appropriate view of fiscal year 2009.

Other Expenses. Palm excludes certain other items that are the result of unplanned events to measure its operating performance. Included in these items are patent acquisition cost (refund), restructuring charges (adjustments), gain on sale of land, impairment of non-current auction rate securities and accretion of series B convertible preferred stock, as some of these amounts relate to items that are unplanned and are not expected to recur on a quarterly basis. Therefore, by providing this information Palm believes its management and the users of its financial statements are better able to understand the financial results of what Palm considers to be its current financial performance, ongoing operations and prospects for the future.

Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortization. EBITDA is defined as earnings before net interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. Palm considers this measure to be an important indicator of its operational strength to incur and repay indebtedness. Palm excludes net interest and taxes to allow a creditor to assess the ability to repay different debt instruments. Palm excludes depreciation and amortization because while tangible and intangible assets support Palm's business, Palm does not believe the related depreciation and amortization costs are directly attributable to Palm's ability to repay debt. This measure is used by some investors when assessing the performance of the company. In addition, Palm further excludes the other non-GAAP items, such as stock-based compensation, patent acquisition cost (refund), restructuring charges (adjustments), gain on sale of land and impairment of non-current auction rate securities listed above, to determine Adjusted EBITDA. Palm believes the assessment of its operations further excluding stock-based compensation, net other income (expense), patent acquisition cost (refund), restructuring charges (adjustments), gain on sale of land and impairment of non-current auction rate securities is relevant to the assessment of internal operations and comparisons to industry performance.

Each of the non-GAAP financial measures described above, and used in this press release, should not be considered in isolation from, or as a substitute for, a measure of financial performance prepared in accordance with GAAP. Further, investors are cautioned that there are inherent limitations associated with the use of each of these non-GAAP financial measures as an analytical tool. In particular, these non-GAAP financial measures are not based on a comprehensive set of accounting rules or principles and many of the adjustments to the GAAP financial measure reflect the exclusion of items that are recurring and will be reflected in the Company's financial results for the foreseeable future. Palm compensates for these limitations by providing specific information in the reconciliation included in this press release regarding the GAAP amounts excluded from the non-GAAP financial measures. In addition, as noted above, Palm evaluates the non-GAAP financial measures together with the most directly comparable GAAP financial information.

TOKYO, JAPAN, September 22, 2008 --- NTT DOCOMO, INC. announced today that it will dissolve HIVE Inc., a subsidiary based in Japan.

1.Outline of subsidiary

Company name: HIVE Inc.
Address: 5-4-9 Kanda, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, Japan
Representative: Shigemi Suzuki
Business: Management of anime-related web portal sites and marketing of anime-related businesses
Capital: 88,000,000 yen
Shares issued: 1,760 shares
Fiscal year-end: March 31
Employees: 2 (as of August 31, 2008)
Main customers: DOCOMO, etc.
Shareholders: 98.9% owned by DOCOMO

2.Reasons for Dissolution
DOCOMO established HIVE Inc. as part of its program to encourage employee entrepreneurship. The subsidiary's purpose was to manage a social network service and anime-related web portal sites, as well as to provide marketing and consulting services for anime-related businesses. A tightening business environment, however, has made it difficult for the subsidiary to meet its revenue and profit targets, prompting DOCOMO's decision to dissolve the company.

3.Schedule
The dissolution is expected to be completed in February 2009.

4.Impact on DOCOMO's Operating Results
The dissolution is expected to have very little impact on DOCOMO's consolidated and non-consolidated financial results for the year ending March 31, 2009, and DOCOMO is not amending its forecast earnings for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2009 in connection with the dissolution.

About NTT DOCOMO
NTT DOCOMO is the world's leading mobile communications company. DOCOMO serves over 53 million customers, including 45 million people subscribing to FOMA™, launched as the world's first 3G mobile service based on W-CDMA in 2001. DOCOMO also offers a wide variety of leading-edge mobile multimedia services, including i-mode™, the world's most popular mobile e-mail/Internet service, used by 48 million people. With the addition of credit-card and other e-wallet functions, DOCOMO mobile phones have become highly versatile tools for daily life. NTT DOCOMO is listed on the Tokyo (9437), London (NDCM) and New York (DCM) stock exchanges. For more information, visit www.nttdocomo.com.

If you were wondering why Palm just posted another less-than-stellar quarter of earnings despite the runaway success of its Centro line, we think we have the answer: it's been digging into the piggy bank to ice out its gear. Palm has commissioned Ed Hardy to "specially equip" some Centros as gifts for presenters at the Primetime Emmys (which fall somewhere between Cable Ace and Teen Choice Awards for prestige), and the result is... well, this. The designs won't be available to the general public, but we think we're going to reserve our envy for anything else.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
