The new Asus R710 portable navigation device (PND) with PathFinder is a handy navigational gadget that delivers a whole new level of vehicle safety through the world’s first PathFinder HUD (Heads-Up Display) technology. It is also equipped with a large 5" touch screen display that is not only functional, but exudes a sleek, stylish look. The Asus R710 also boasts a large variety of features that enable a smoother, safer drive, including Bluetooth handsfree functions and a built-in light sensor.

Press Release after the jump

The Asus R710 also doubles as a portable communications and multimedia center that makes driving or rest stops more enjoyable. Users can listen to MP3s, watch videos, and browse through pictures. It also features a Micro SD memory card slot that accepts cards with capacities of up to 8 GB, providing users with more than ample storage space for hours of multimedia enjoyment.

Taipei, Taiwan, October 9, 2008 –Without a doubt, car safety is paramount when travelling. That is why ASUS, producer of high quality handhelds, has released the new ASUS R710 portable navigation device (PND) with PathFinder. This handy navigational gadget delivers a whole new level of vehicle safety through the world´s first PathFinder HUD (Heads-Up Display) technology. It is also equipped with a large 5" touchscreen display that is not only functional, but exudes a sleek, stylish look. The R710 also boasts a large variety of features that enable a smoother, safer drive, including Bluetooth handsfree functions and a built-in light sensor.

Enhanced Car Safety with PathFinder HUD Support
The R710´s most unique and innovative feature is the PathFinder HUD. This ability allows the R710 to project navigational instructions—such as directions, speed and so forth—onto the windshield in front of the driver. This serves to aid users in focusing on the roads ahead, removing the need to constantly interact with the device and thus distracting the driver. It typically takes about 1 to 2 seconds for the driver to change his field of vision from the front of the car to a regular PND, so if the driver was travelling at 100 km/h, this glance would have meant that the vehicle had already traversed a distance of 27 m. With the PathFinder HUD, drivers can fully concentrate on the road in front of them—hugely improving car safety.

Sleek Design with Intuitive 5" Touchscreen Interface
The R710´s sleek, streamlined design does without the unnecessary clutter of buttons, emphasizing a seamless, smooth look that provides simplicity and elegance. An additional boon of its design is that there are no corners for dirt to gather. The R710 is also highly functional, providing users with a convenient, intuitive and user-friendly interface that utilizes the large 5" touchscreen for easy control. Furthermore, the large screen space allows users to see more roads, lanes and points of interests (POI) on the screen, while the concise and colorful menu helps users navigate with ease. At only 13.5 mm slim and 200 g in weight, the R710 is light enough for easy portability, and with its elegant and sleek look, fits perfectly into any car interior.

Bluetooth Features for a Smoother Drive
With Bluetooth 2.0 handsfree calling support, the R710 provides users with a safe way to answer incoming calls—allowing them to concentrate more on their driving without the need to handle the device. It also features fast transfer speeds and better voice quality for a smoother communicating experience, as well as the ability to auto-pair with other devices—requiring users to only set up connections once before being able to automatically build up Bluetooth connections from then on. The R710 is also equipped with an embedded echo-cancellation chip for superior audio quality.

Safety First with Built-in Auto Light Sensor
The R710 is also equipped with a built-in auto light sensor that automatically optimizes the backlighting of the LCD panel. This safety feature not only saves power, it also lets users view navigational directions regardless of what time it is in the day and environmental lighting conditions—the display remains vivid even when driving in a tunnel, for instance. With this feature, users will get optimal lighting to view directions without straining their eyes or drawing too much attention from driving.

Versatile Entertainment Center
The R710 also doubles as a portable communications and multimedia center that makes driving or rest stops more enjoyable. Users can listen to MP3s, watch videos, and browse through pictures. It also features a Micro SD memory card slot that accepts cards with capacities of up to 8 GB, providing users with more than ample storage space for hours of multimedia enjoyment. No matter if the driver is remaining in the car or taking a rest in a café, the slim and portable R710—with its multimedia functions—is the perfect traveling companion.

Thanks to about a million tips, I've been forced to sit through the new Britney Spears music video for "Womanizer" because the flashy Nokia 5800 XpressMusic 'Tube' makes an appearance. The phone is used to take a picture of a ridiculously be-wigged Britney before she violently attacks the photographer and slams his face into a photocopier, sending the poor phone flying. But that's not the end of the technology in the video!

I won't get into any depth on the song, because this is Gizmodo and when a song only has two words and both of them are "womanizer," it's tough to glean any gadget connection. But the Nokia first makes an appearance at breakfast, when Britney's antagonist checks his calendar to see what kind of womanizing he'll get up to today.
It's pretty obvious product placement when the words "Nokia" glimmer for no reason, but I was too distracted by what he was eating to care:
Okay, a square egg is easy, you can just cut the white into whatever shape you want. But the YOLK is square too! Britney should stop singing and open a restaurant, because that's goddamn amazing. Luckily, all this happens in the first minute so you don't need to sit through the awful inane screeching for too long. [- Thanks, everyone who sent this in]

It’s a sad day for every Nokia fan in China. Apparently Nokia’s iPhone killer, 5800 XpressMusic, will come without 3G and WiFi support. And while I can understand the lack of 3G radio because of Chinese TD-SCDMA standard, lack of WiFi is not that easy to explain. Why on earth would you want such a device like the Tube without WiFi support is beyond me. Sure, these two combined will make Nokia’s all-touchscreen wonder more affordable to the Chinese consumer, but will they actually want the smartphone that bad to get it that crippled? Any thoughts?

T-Mobile Deploys Nuance Mobile Care Solution to Deliver Improved Customer Experience, Operational Excellence in Customer Self-Care

BURLINGTON, MA, – Nuance Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq: NUAN) announced that T-Mobile USA, one of the fastest growing providers of wireless voice and data services, is deploying Nuance’s Mobile Care solution on select T-Mobile handsets.

The new application will enable T-Mobile to provide its customers with a more intuitive, user-friendly experience, allowing them to automatically resolve common problems. T-Mobile customers can now address such issues as diagnosing and repairing configuration problems, along with making account and billing inquiries – all on their mobile phones. Pilots and trials in both the U.S. and Europe have proven customers’ preference for on-device self-service.

“T-Mobile works toward delivering exceptional service to every customer, every day,” said Warren McNeel, vice president of product development at T-Mobile USA. “Nuance Mobile Care gives us the ability to provide a superior customer service experience and offers our customers an easy way to learn about and use advanced services, right from the screen of their phone.”

“The growing complexity in devices and data service technologies has made it challenging for wireless operator customer support and made it more difficult for subscribers to discover beneficial services,” said J. Gerry Purdy, Ph.D., vice president and chief analyst, Mobile & Wireless Communications at Frost & Sullivan. “Nuance Mobile Care represents an excellent solution for T-Mobile that enables their customers to solve – right on the device - many of the common problems they encounter, from checking their account balance and paying bills to upgrading their data plans and setting up email.”

“T-Mobile is known for its great service, which reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to meeting the needs of their customers.” said Mikael Berner, vice president and general manager for Nuance Mobile Care. “With our Mobile Care solution, the bar has been raised for quality customer service, helping companies reach the next plateau in customer satisfaction. Devices can now solve problems and answer questions more quickly and easily than ever before.”

Nuance Mobile Care solutions can be embedded on a customer’s mobile device over-the-air (OTA) or installed by the manufacturer. The interactive experiences, such as paying a bill, new feature tutorials or relevant service discovery can be created by the operators and pushed OTA to any device that supports Nuance Mobile Care. The product suite enables the delivery of interactive promotions, the resolution of most customer support problems, and allows operators to deliver a branded service experience to their subscribers.

About T-Mobile USA
Based in Bellevue, WA, T-Mobile USA, Inc. is the U.S. operation of Deutsche Telekom AG’s Mobile Communications Business, and a wholly owned subsidiary of T-Mobile International, one of the world’s leading companies in mobile communications. By the end of the second quarter of 2008, 125 million mobile customers were served by the mobile communication segments of the Deutsche Telekom group — 31.5 million by T-Mobile USA — all via a common technology platform based on GSM, the world’s most widely used digital wireless standard. T-Mobile’s innovative wireless products and services help empower people to connect to those who matter most. Multiple independent research studies continue to rank T-Mobile among the highest in numerous regions throughout the U.S. in wireless customer care and call quality.
