Do you need a new bed?  Do you want a new $5000 platform bed for a lot less?

Here’s a cool DIY on how to make your own platform bed from scratch.

I sincerely do love this DIY since I own a platform bed myself.

The last step to completing my bed was upholstering the entire particle board box. I purchased enough sheets of one-centimeter-thick foam from a local foam store. The foam store employees agreed that foam thicker than 1 cm is difficult to upholster using just a simple staple gun. Using a regular staple gun from the hardware store, I covered the four box sides of the bed. I tried to not staple anywhere that would be visible or touchable on the top or side of the bed. Instead, I stapled on the inside edge of the boxes where the mattress would hide the staples and under the lip of each empty-bottomed box side. The bed in it’s partly upholstered state is shown here below.

Here’s an interesting DIY that re-uses an old State Farm insurance sign into a chair re-make.

This chair is made from, obviously, a 25-year old metal sign — but, to complete the concept, all the wood I used is recycled campaign sign posts. In this election season, those wooden stakes should be plentiful. They are generally crap, rough-sawn wood, but with a little sandpaper and elbow grease, they can be cleaned up. It is 100% recycled, save the fasteners.

The LightMate is basically a large pillow with a few warming lamps which are presumably there for the user to feel that he or she is snuggling with a warm body.

Judging from the comments that were posted on the INBED article, there will no doubt be comments on this article saying that the LightMate is “creepy”. My only response to that is this: if you are actively pretending that some inanimate object is a sleeping partner, then yes, that is creepy. However, I know a lot of people who sleep with a body pillow, and nobody thinks that is disturbing, but a simple channeling of our snuggling instinct.

Unfortunately, what designer Francesca Lanzavecchia was attempting with the LightMate was that she wanted to create “soft anthropomorphic pillows”. For those of you who don’t know what anthropomorphic means, it is “the attribution of human form, human characteristics, or human behavior to nonhuman things”.

In this case, it applies to act of pretending a pillow is a sleeping mate. Of course, this is what designer Lanzavecchia was trying to do by creating “a mate to hug or a huge companion you can lay on”. Okay, that’s a little creepy, and I think I’m going to quit now.

The Jetboil Personal Cooking System (PCS) has sparked a revolution in outdoor cooking. Capable of boiling two cups in two minutes at 75-80% efficiency, the PCS is twice as fast and uses half as much fuel as conventional stoves. The PCS boils up to 50 cups (12 liters) of water from only one isobutane/propane micro-canister. Well, this is neat especially for those who love adventuring in the great outdoors, and starting a fire can be quite a hassle. It also makes for the perfect device if you want instant hot water (although there is the initial 2 minute wait), allowing to brew your own coffee almost instantaneously.

This device consistently imposes limits on TV, video game, or computer usage, helping your child learn how to effectively budget time. The device to be monitored plugs into the time manager’s locking outlet. You can create accounts for up to six users, each with its own daily or weekly time allotment, PIN, and “block out” times, where the device can’t be used–for example, from 3:00 p.m. to 5 p.m., to ensure time is set aside for schoolwork. When a user’s time allotment is exhausted, the device sounds a warning so that equipment can be powered off normally. The Sony BDV-IT1000ES 5.1 channel Blu-ray Disc home theater system comes in a super slim speaker design, bringing together a flat voice coil, light weight and highly rigid composite diaphragm, neodymium magnet and rolled type straight damper that enables the full range speaker to measure around 0.75″ wide x 22″ long. The shape of this solid stainless punch grill is able to provide the speaker a wide aperture and high transmission that will help avoid sound distortion. In addition, it is accompanied by a 700W (100W per channel x 7) and a 200W subwoofer. As for the BDV-IS1000, this unobtrusive speaker design will come with five small speakers that are roughly the size of a golf ball. Despite their small size, the 5.1 channel Blu-ray Disc surround system won’t have any trouble delivering the full power of traditional home theater products.

Thanks to Sony’s S-AIR technology, both systems are able to roll out a practical wireless multi-room solution without having to suffer complicated set-up requirements. The main system will transmit wireless audio from the living room to wireless rear speakers for a simple surround sound effect, in addition to separate audio devices throughout the home. All this works within a 164 foot radius, so make sure you don’t have too large of a mansion if you want to pick this up. All you need to do is connect a separate S-AIR AirStation receiver/speaker into a power outlet and you’re good to go.

The BDV-IT1000ES and the BDV-IS1000 will ship for $1,999 and approximately $1,000 this October.
