If you visited Forum Nokia website recently, you’ve certainly noticed a brand new design. The Finnish giant’s developer network worked round the clock to make the new website better serve its members and non-members alike.

From the “official blog post:”

Matt Collins’ Forum Nokia Blog: First, it was important to all of us in Forum Nokia that we include actual users of all kinds at every step of this renewal process. So we created a Developer Advisory Committee, made up mostly of Champions, with which to discuss our ideas. We conducted the most comprehensive website research we’ve ever commissioned to capture your feedback and concerns. We spoke with several of you to help understand your pain points and goals online, and we did several rounds of testing to make sure that the site would enable you to get to the resources you need more quickly and efficiently. In other words, the changes you will see have been made with you in mind.

…You’ll see right away that we’ve got a new site design and information architecture (IA). We hope that you will find that both will make navigating easy. The IA includes an all-new way of uncovering our resources, a task-based approach to navigation that is called “I Want To.” You tell us what you want to do, and we’ll take you to the resource you need. This should make it even easier, especially for newcomers, to find what they need. If you like to subscribe to feeds, you’ll find lots of places throughout the site to subscribe to Forum Nokia content. Also, a persistent right-hand column will feature all the most important resources Forum Nokia has to offer, from upcoming events to online community highlights.

If you’re currently developing for any of Nokia-supported platforms, you’ve probably already noticed a redesign. We’re eager to hear your thoughts - do you find the new design more helpful? Does it make your life easier? Comments form is all yours…

The website 148apps.com has reported that 10,000 applications have now been released to the general iPhone and iPod Touch-loving public within the App Store.

In a cool touch, the site has also created this tribute page that shows a micro-icon for every application available in the store. On this page you’ll also find some interesting statistics concerning new submissions by month, app count by price, and app count by category. It was no surprise to me when I took a closer look at this page that the Games category was far and away the most popular, with 2,319 apps. The Entertainment and Utilities categories are next in line, with 1,109 and 1,009 apps available respectively.

Some other interesting tidbits to note… Roughly 24% of apps are free, 35% cost $.99, and the average cost of apps within the store is $3.12. What a cash-cow for Apple… and the developers. But mostly Apple

Well done to Apple and all of the very talented developers out there that have been working very hard on some fantastic (OK, and some are not very fantastic) apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch. I wonder how long it will take to hit 20,000 apps? 100,000 apps? Should be interesting to see where we sit at the same time next year.

Note: 148apps.com is so named because you can add up to 148 apps to your iPhone or iPod Touch. That’d be a lot of screens to swipe through, no?

Mary Lou Jepsen—the XO Laptop's designer and OLPC's CTO before defecting and founding Pixel Qi—has even grander ambitions for new laptop project than hitting a mythical $75 pricetag. Pixel Qi is working on a laptop will be able to run on a standard for 20 to 40 hours, no pixie dust required.

How? It's all about the screen. Just just like she reinvented the LCD screen for the XO, making the project possible both costwise and practically (with the flip of a switch, the color LCD can switch to one that's monochrome and highly reflective, making it easy to use outside and even more energy efficient) she's trying to do it again with Pixel Qi's latest. Their incredible efficiency is what will allow the laptops to possibly run for 20-40 hours.

Obviously, she wouldn't spell out in detail what's so magical about their screens yet. In an email to PC World, Jepsen simply says that:

"At Pixel Qi, we have a new series of inventions that go well beyond the OLPC screen that we are developing right now... We can enable an increase of 5-10X battery life between charges compared with a standard notebook. This means that rather than needing to recharge your batteries every few hours, you could run 20-40 hours of use on a one charge."

However they work, we'll be eager to check 'em out when they debut sometime in the second half of next year.
- Global Electronics Leader Transforms Hotel Market With Award-Winning TV Range

Samsung announces a raft of major deals in the hotel industry, marking the end of a highly successful 12 month launch period in which it has seized 20 per cent market share.

Samsung has partnered with Europe's top hotel systems integrators, Acentic, Locatel and Quadriga, to provide a 'one stop shop' for entertainment and revenue generation via hotel TVs. Prestigious European hotel groups which have already installed Samsung include, De Vere, Dorchester, Concorde Louvre Hotel and The Intercontinental Hotel Group.

Pammi Mudhar, European B2B Sales Director, Samsung said: "By adapting our award-winning 4 and 6 Series Flat Screen TVs for hotels, Samsung has developed an offering which is high on design and functionality, but low on price. As one of the most instantly recognisable consumer technology brands, Samsung is now acutely focused on becoming Europe's premier hotel technology supplier."

Using Acentic and Samsung, the Cavendish hotel in London has installed in-room digital broadcast, on-demand and interactive television systems in all of its 230 rooms. Hotel General Manager, Ciaran Fahy, said: "Our guests are more discerning than ever about their choice of hotel - and the standard of in-room technology is a major factor in their choice. By offering the high levels of design, picture quality and connectivity of Samsung TVs we are exceeding guests' expectations."

"The TV is a reflection of the quality of a hotel and represents our commitment to guest satisfaction and a unique in-room entertainment experience," said Alistair Forbes, CEO at Acentic. "We are delighted with our partnership with Samsung, which we believe will enable European hotels to bring perfect picture quality content, stunning design and a set of tools that they can use to increase their TV revenue, as well as extend the hotel's image and branding to guests through the TV screen."

Mr. Mudhar added: "European Hotels have been hit hard by slowing economic conditions and many are cutting their rates to shore up business levels. However, hoteliers should not fall into the trap of devaluing the hotel experience by price-cutting. Instead, they should seek ways to cost-effectively improve their rooms - thereby appealing to broader market segments, as opposed to limiting their appeal to higher end hotel guests."

The sleek Flat Panel LCD TVs present the best crystal clear quality, along with Samsung's unique Touch of Colour design. Samsung hotel TVs also allow instant access to multimedia content from portable devices, including media players, camcorders and cameras. As well as being an essential viewing device, Samsung's hotel range enables guests to connect to the internet - supplying live weather and news reports, as well as interactive information about the hotel's services.

Samsung TVs have been installed within the following prestigious European hotels:

- Hotel Meurice (Dorchester), Paris
- Hotel Plaza Athenee (Dorchester), Paris
- Hotel Crillon (Concorde Louvre Hotel), Paris
- The Connaught, Mayfair, London
- The De Vere Cavendish, Jermyn St, London
- The Intercontinental Hotel Group (preferred supplier EMEA)

Big Canvas is out with with OilCanvas, a neat application that allows users to paint on their iPhone/iPod Touch device using nothing but a finger.

Here’s how it works:

With OilCanvas, users create or personalize artwork by first selecting an image they capture or previously saved to their iPhone library. After selecting an image to serve as the base picture, users choose a brush and paint with their fingers. OilCanvas eliminates confusion and simplifies art by automatically locating the paint color from the imported base picture.

And that’s about it. The app is free — ot at least to the first 50,000 people who download it, according to the official release — and you can grab it from here (iTunes link).

Previously, Big Canvas released three other iPhone apps: PhotoShare, SmallCanvas and PhotoArtist.

A short clip of “OilCanvas in action” follows after the jump.

"The ability to use the Nokia S60 platform devices as a dual-mode phone, empowered with DeFi, allows our customers to use the Nokia products to their full potential while saving thousands of dollars a year on roaming and data connection fees."

DeFi Mobile recently launched DeFi Global Access, a subscription-based service enabling its members to make and receive unlimited phone calls worldwide via Wi-Fi access to DeFi Mobile's carrier-grade, global IP network - - all for a flat monthly fee of pounds Sterling 23/ euro 29 / $40 plus tax. The service also includes unlimited worldwide Internet and data access for mobile device web browsing and e-mail.

As part of this service, DeFi Global Access members' mobile devices automatically connect to millions of private, free and commercially available access points around the world. This is the result of more than 50 global partnerships involving 75+ countries and includes 15,000+ hotels, 120+ international airports and tens of thousands of coffee shops, restaurants and marinas around the world.

DeFi Global Access members experience business-class voice quality with important features and applications including voicemail-to-email, caller-ID, call-forwarding, call-hold and call-transfer -- all with feature-rich support. DeFi members tailor these services to their specific needs via their own web-portal, which includes account management, call-logs, on-line support and self-help tools. DeFi members receive high quality customer support, including on-line support available at http://www.defimobile.com/support.

DeFi Global Access members choose the country from which their DeFi contact phone number originates, a number that will remain theirs as long as they are DeFi Global Access member. For an additional pounds Sterling 5/ euro 7 / $10 monthly fee plus tax, DeFi members can have up to three phone numbers in three different countries all ringing to the same phone. This allows customers, friends and family to place low-cost, local calls directly to DeFi Members. This service is called DeFi Global Access+ and is available as part of the sign-up process at http://www.defimobile.com. Another convenience, DeFi Global Access members can continue to use their same cellular provider phone numbers, because DeFi members use dual mode smart phones that are both Wi-Fi and cellular capable.

Leveraging DeFi's automated Wi-Fi access point connection service, DeFi Global Access members save money on data-roaming fees, connecting to the Internet and sending and receiving corporate and personal e-mail from their smartphone. DeFi members may also use Nokia's recently released Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, a fast and easy corporate e-mail solution for more than 80 million mobile devices around the world: http://www.nokia.com/A4136001?newsid=1250102

DeFi Global Access is a superior to standard mobile VoIP solutions in several significant ways. By routing calls over its managed network, DeFi delivers superior call quality, eliminating the "jitter" and dropped calls synonymous with other VoIP operators. DeFi members also automatically connect to commercial Wi-Fi access points worldwide unlike DeFi competitors who require their users to purchase Wi-Fi separately, often from multiple providers, and then to connect manually.

DeFi Mobile recently announced that DeFi Global Access will be available for Apple iPhone users before the beginning of 2009. As well, DeFi Mobile is currently developing DeFi Global Access support for people who rely on other smartphone operating systems, including RIM (Blackberry), Windows Mobile, UIQ and others.

About Forum Nokia PRO

Forum Nokia PRO provides specialized support for advanced developer companies creating the next generation of software based on the Series 40, S60 and Series 80 platforms from Nokia.
Mobile Broadband Network Limited (MBNL), the 50:50 joint venture formed by 3UK and T-Mobile UK to manage the integration of both operators' 3G radio access networks (RAN), has awarded Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) a four-year managed services contract for the operation and maintenance of the consolidated network.

T-Mobile and 3 formed their infrastructure sharing agreement in January 2008 with the aim of creating the UK's most extensive 3G network by 2010. This ground-breaking network collaboration will deliver close to complete nationwide population coverage for 3G services and significantly improve in-building signal strength. The agreement will also deliver substantial cost savings as well as environmental benefits, including the decommissioning of an estimated 5,000 cell sites.

Under the terms of the agreement, Ericsson has responsibility for the operation and performance management of both parent companies' 3G networks and T-Mobile's 2G RAN infrastructure. The four-year contract will enable MBNL to control operational expenses and deliver high service levels at a time when the 3G network consolidation is moving into the mass deployment phase.

The first integrated cell site was commissioned in early February 2008. Since then MBNL has concluded a pilot in the Leeds and Bradford area which successfully validated the network sharing technology and is now engaged in consolidating the radio access networks across the UK.

Around 80 employees from T-Mobile have been transferred to Ericsson, further strengthening its existing UK managed services capability. In the UK, Ericsson holds separate managed services contracts with T-Mobile and 3. T-Mobile and 3 are both global Ericsson customers.

Emin Gurdenli, Chief Technology Officer for T-Mobile UK, says: "The appointment of Ericsson is another significant step towards realizing our commitment to create and operate the UK's most extensive 3G network. Partnering with a proven and progressive services organization reinforces our intent to deliver superior, high-speed mobile data services to customers across the UK."

Mats Granryd, Managing Director, Ericsson UK, says: "We are delighted and proud to be given the responsibility of operating the radio access network for MBNL. This is an extremely exciting and bold project and we are entirely committed to playing our part in achieving success for MBNL's parent companies."

Graham Baxter, CTO, 3 UK, says: "The deployment of our consolidated mobile broadband network is advancing rapidly. Having Ericsson as a trusted partner operating the access network will be an important contribution to our overall goals of providing a reliable and high performance service."

The contract with Ericsson is the latest of a number of key supplier agreements awarded by MBNL in recent months for the provision of 3G radio network infrastructure and a five-year managed service contract for the supply of high-speed Ethernet connections to 7,500 cell sites.

Espoo, Finland - Nokia announced today that the highly anticipated Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is now, or soon will be, available in select markets globally, including Russia, Spain, India, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Finland, among others. The latest in Nokia's XpressMusic range, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic delivers an affordable music device with a touch screen interface to the mass market.

Aiming to put music into the hands of millions, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic offers all the music essentials including a graphic equalizer, 8GB memory for up to 6000 tracks, support for all main digital music formats, and a 3.5mm jack. Built-in surround sound stereo speakers offer the industry's most powerful sound.

"When it comes to music phones, people all over the world want a device that is a great music experience and still works really well as a mobile phone, without sacrificing features," said Jo Harlow, Vice President, Nokia. "The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic delivers on this and allows consumers to quickly and easily access and share the content that is most important to them with the people that are most important to them."

Making the most of touch screen technology, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic delivers easy and fast access to all music, video and photos through a one-touch 'Mediabar' drop down menu. The Media Bar also offers a direct link to the Web and to online sharing. Because the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic supports Flash content, individuals can surf the entire web.

The innovative 'Contacts Bar' lets people highlight four favorite contacts on their home-screen and, through a single touch, track a digital history of recent text messages, emails, phone logs, photos and blog updates.

For the best screen resolution available on a mobile phone, the 3.2" widescreen display brings photos, video clips and web content to life in vibrant color and true clarity. With a 16 by 9 aspect ratio and 30 frames-per-second playback and recording, the device is ideal for VGA quality video recording and playback. The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic also features a 3.2 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens and, with a single touch, images or videos can be shared via a favorite online community, such as Share on Ovi, Flickr, or Facebook.

Ensuring a seamless music experience, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic also provides easy access to browse and purchase tracks from the Nokia Music Store, where applicable, while the newly updated Nokia Music PC software allows for easy drag-and-drop transfer of songs and management of any music collection.

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic supports 60 languages worldwide and offers a variety of input methods including a virtual alphanumeric keypad, a virtual computer-style QWERTY keyboard, a pen stylus -- and for true music enthusiasts, a plectrum -- are all available.

Photos of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic are available at www.nokia.com/press

About Nokia
Nokia is the world leader in mobility, driving the transformation and growth of the converging Internet and communications industries. We make a wide range of mobile devices with services and software that enable people to experience music, navigation, video, television, imaging, games, business mobility and more. Developing and growing our offering of consumer Internet services, as well as our enterprise solutions and software, is a key area of focus.
