Apparently, there's a whole field of alternative medicine called magnotherapy, which claims that exposing the body to permanent magnets will help you heal. While you take a moment to recover from falling off your chair while cracking up, allow me to introduce Field & Stream's Magno-Therapy wristwatch.

Here's the deal: people who buy into magnotherapy often wear magnetic bracelets for their supposed health effects. If you wear a watch, that means hardware on both wrists. But you can ditch the bracelet if you have the Magno-Thearpy watch (Model F403GKBSM), which mounts permanent magnets in the metallic watchband. Each of the 14 magnets has a strength of 1,200 Gauss (which presumably means something to you if you actually believe this stuff), and the watch movement is shielded from their effects. Golfers will particularly like that the crown is on the left side of the bezel, giving the wearer more freedom of movement in the wrist.

Magnotherapy <s>nuts</s> enthusiasts can get some Tesla on their wrists for just $195. A ladies version is available for the same price.

The Army is planning to issue to front-line infantry units a so-called Rifleman Radio, a 7.5 pound unit that fits in the pocket of a field uniform, does more than provide voice communications for the Army’s smallest maneuver units. He said the radio also uses the Global Positioning System (GPS) to transmit the position of each soldier in a squad or platoon to a display attached to a team leader’s radio.

The Rifleman Radio, which is still under testing, is apparently using a commercial GPS receiver rather than a more expensive, and more precise, military GPS system to keep the costs down. However the commercial GPS is still good enough for a squad leader to pinpoint soldiers on the battlefield on a wrist-mounted display connected to the radio.

The cost of the new radio was not revealed but we’re guessing it will cost a lot just like anything related to the military.

The Rifleman Radio uses software that relies on a waveform or algorithm developed by Joint Tactical Radio System Program Executive Office at the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command, which is headquartered here, to communicate in the UHF and L-band frequencies. The radio uses Voice over IP for voice communications.

Google Street View and over the air Podcast downloads from iTunes. Yup, public transit and walking directions too and the ability to share your location via email. Bug fixes, Safari enhancements, the ability to toggle auto-text correction, and plenty more... just like we heard in the pre-rumor run-up. Now get outta here, your iTunes update awaits.

Update: Added some screenshots of the most notable new features after the break. The Street View implementation seems solid though we miss the compass feature found on T-Mobile's G1. Also, the real-estate saved by moving the Google search field next to the URL field in Mobile Safari is a welcome and obvious change. As to auto-correction, well, that's personal taste. Tipster Vizcaya also noticed that Apple added a new option to rate an App when you delete it from your phone. You can also view multiple screenshots of applications available in the App Store.

Update 2: The other big update, Podcast downloads, works just as you'd hope and should further promote the spontaneous isolation we all crave. A few shots of that added after the break.

[Thanks Gustavo and badburro]
Continue reading iPhone 2.2 firmware update available now, Google Street View and plenty more

iPhone 2.2 firmware update available now, Google Street View and plenty more originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 21 Nov 2008 00:43:00 EST.
FED (or Field Emission Display) hasn't quite caught on as quickly as some other display technologies, but Sony's still out there doing its best to move things forward, and it certainly looks to have turned more than a few heads with its latest demo. Apparently not content with simply showing off a new 19-inch display from its spin-off, Field Emission Technologies, Sony went so far as to demo it with a customized version of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue that's playable at 240 fps. To do that, Sony used four PS3s to increase the frame rate, something it had previously done to run the game at quadruple the resolution of 1080p on a Sony SXHD projector. While that setup is out of the reach of most folks, Field Emission Technologies says that FED displays are now finally heading to market, and that some high-end professional FED video monitors up to 32-inches in size will be available sometime next year.

[Via OLED-Display.info]

Baby boomers and active seniors don’t have to adapt their lives to our technology; we’ve already adapted it to their needs.”

HandleEasy 330gsm

“Finally, a phone that is intuitive to use and uncomplicated,” declared John Donnelly, a 65-year-old business management consultant based in New York and a Doro HandleEasy 330gsm user. “I turned on the HandleEasy 330 and began using it immediately without having to read through the manual. From the first minute I turned-on the Doro phone, I could easily navigate through the large, brightly colored screen, look through my phone book without reading glasses, check voicemails, and I especially like the cool, sleek design. It’s much nicer looking, lighter, and easier to use than the three-year-old phone I was carrying around.”

Eighty-two-year-old Manuel Machado – who lives in Modesto, Calif., travels extensively in retirement, and has limited vision from a medical condition, macular degeneration – said of the Doro HandleEasy 326i gsm, “This is a phone I can actually use! I can read the screen, see the directory, and easily make calls. This is the first phone I’ve had in several years that I will use more frequently.” Dr. Steven A. Machado of Los Angeles, Manuel’s son, explains, “Macular degeneration can be especially frustrating for patients like my father because it puts a blank spot in the center of their field of vision, making it nearly impossible to see details right in front of them, like when dialing a phone. So, this phone from Doro is a godsend for Dad.”

HandleEasy 326igsm

A fixture in most every household in Sweden for 35 years, Doro is well known for innovatively incorporating the latest technologies while maintaining simplicity of design and functionality. Consumers in over 30 countries already enjoy the inclusive designs and easy functionality of Doro’s phones. Doro HandleEasy 330 and 326i are the company’s first products available in the U.S.

Doro HandleEasy phones are currently available at all Centennial Wireless retail stores in six states (www.centennialwireless.com). “We are thrilled to offer Centennial customers Doro mobile phones designed especially for baby boomers and active seniors,” said Philip Mayberry, President of Centennial Wireless. “Doro’s long history of design innovation in Sweden is legendary in the telecommunications industry and now Doro’s user-friendly phones are popular all across Europe. Centennial is proud to be the first place in America that Doro phones are available.”

Doro’s U.S. Representative, Christopher Lundstrom, further explained, “Doro’s goal is to make its products available through a national delivery model in the months ahead, we want everyone to have the opportunity to enjoy Doro products. We are very pleased and fortunate to have Centennial Wireless offering our products in the U.S. market, Centennial created an excellent custom rate plan for the HandleEasy 330. This is a very attractive offering for both baby boomers and seniors alike, a tailored rate plan is key for this demographic and the overall customer experience.”

Neuros, who built their reputation with weird, chunky (but wonderful) modular MP3 players, has long since moved exclusively to the home entertainment field. Their latest attempt at eroding the Apple TV's market share is the Link, a set-top streaming box that will pull video from a wide range of online TV sources — Hulu, NBC, ABC, etc. — as well as stream local audio and video content from any USB hard drive. As is always the case with Neuros set-tops, the Link's software is open source and ready for modification. This time, mercifully, that might not be the box's biggest draw.

With the Neuros.TV interface, the Link does something simple but spectacular. Instead of pushing you through a clumsy series of web portals, it gives you a simple, unified interface for browsing online video content. With out-of-the-box support for nearly any video codec (courtesy of mPlayer and VLC, mainly), a solid interface and an included wireless keyboard/controller, it's a capable machine. At $299 (or $249 without the keyboard), it'll be tough to take on the $229 Apple TV, which in addition to having an included local hard drive and access to iTunes, supports most of Neuros.TV's features though Boxee.
You might think that you've seen it all with Gran Turismo 5 being played in full HD glory on your Sony Bravia HDTV, but your perception will definitely change if you've seen the same game in action running on a Nano-Spindt FED/Field Emissions Display developed by Sony, boasting a superior frame rate of 240fps. This is by far much higher than Gran Turismo 5 Prologue's frame rate of 60p (progressive), as the demonstration managed to hit four times the amount. The 19" nano-Spindt FED screen on display features more than 10,000 electron sources known as the nano-spindt emitter, per pixcel. Each time a fluorescent substance is exposed to the electrons from the emitters, light is produced - pretty much similar to how the principle in a cathode-ray tube works. The end result, however is stunning as you feel as though you're in a real world event.
