This has got to be the coolest video that I have seen for a long time. A pizza sliced into eight perfectly sized slices with the help of a laser cutter. While I am not sure how much something like this would cost, I must admit that I am interested to sample a piece of laser cut pizza.
We already got a decent enough look at Intel's new convertible Classmate PC when it made its debut at IDF yesterday, but if you're looking for a slightly more thorough examination of it, you may want to hit up Laptop Magazine, which got a chance to spend some time with the device and offer some initial impressions. As is even more apparent in these pics, the hardware is very much not finalized, with it sporting some mismatched parts and some components that may or may not make it into the final version. That said, they do seem fairly impressed by the laptop, with the built-in accelerometer working well, and the included "Quick Launcher" software shell making Windows XP considerably more accessible to students, and adults for that matter. Hit up the link below for the video hands-on and, of course, plenty more pics.

It's been quite a while since Viliv last popped up on our radar, but the company has just rolled into IDF with a pair of new devices to rectify that situation, including the S5 MID and S7 UMPC. From the looks of it, the S7 (pictured above) is the more interesting of the two, with it sporting a convertible form factor, the usual Atom processor, built-in GPS, and an integrated Wimax or HSDPA module. Pricing doesn't look to have been nailed down just yet, but the company is apparently looking to launch it in the first quarter of 2009. The S5 (after the break), on the other hand, looks to be a fairly run of the mill MID, although UMPC Portal says that a 3G option is "possible," and its promised video playback time of five to six hours is certainly respectable enough. No word on a price or release date for it either, but you can check out some more pics and videos of each device by digging into the links below.

P.S. We should note that the S7 is still in the "final design stages." We hear that last "P" is always the toughest.

Read - UMPC Portal, "Viliv S5 MID"
Read - UMPC Portal, "Viliv S7 Atom-based UMPC"

MIT scientists are developing technology that harnesses natural characteristics of viruses to manufacture tiny batteries that could one day power all sorts of micro devices
An explanation from MIT...

MIT scientists are developing technology that harnesses natural characteristics of viruses to manufacture tiny batteries that could one day power all sorts of micro devices.

An explanation from MIT:

First, on a clear, rubbery material the team used a common technique called soft lithography to create a pattern of tiny posts either four or eight millionths of a meter in diameter. On top of these posts, they then deposited several layers of two polymers that together act as the solid electrolyte and battery separator.

Next came viruses that preferentially self-assemble atop the polymer layers on the posts, ultimately forming the anode. In 2006, Hammond, Belcher, Chiang and colleagues reported in Science how to do this. Specifically, they altered the virus's genes so it makes protein coats that collect molecules of cobalt oxide to form ultrathin wires -- together, the anode.

The final result: a stamp of tiny posts, each covered with layers of electrolyte and the cobalt oxide anode. "Then we turn the stamp over and transfer the electrolyte and anode to a platinum structure" that, together with lithium foil, is used for testing, Hammond said.

The team concludes in their PNAS paper: "the resulting electrode arrays exhibit full electrochemical functionality."

What's next? In addition to developing the third part of a full battery -- the cathode -- via the viral assembly technique, the team is also exploring a stamp for use on curved surfaces, Belcher said. "We're also interested in integrating [the batteries] with biological organisms."

They were terrific; I could not believe how mush noise they kept out. I bought myself a pair for the next trip as my husband was going with me. We will never travel again without them!!!!!

Listen Carefully (2008-08-11)
I first encountered this product early in its commercial life, while flying cross country. My seat mate put his Bose headphones on with great relish, and offered me a listen. I eagerly obliged and in 30 seconds of listening, I thought: very good sound and where's the background noise? Really neat!

Months went by as I pondered the high price, whereupon I succumbed to Bose's slick marketing, and ordered a pair. After several hours of use, I became disenchanted with these headphones. First of all, these phones reduce noise, but do not cancel it. The high pitched whine of a jet engine comes through clearly, although reduced in volume. Other external noises intrude as well, reduced but hardly cancelled. A Bose dealer tested my phone's performance and deemed them to be within specification. In fairness to the Bose, it's noise cancelation works just about perfectly in a quiet, home environment, but not that well when you need it most, like on a plane. The packaging, instruction manual, and connection adapters are all top-notch.

One day I directly compared the Bose's sound fidelity to my 25-year-old pair of AKG K 240 GFs (non-noise canceling); the result: a virtual tie. The Bose had a slightly cleaner treble, but the AKG's had a slightly fuller bass and mid-range. Considering the Bose's high price, I feel that their sound quality is below that expected of a high-priced component.

Lessons learned? For a high-end audio component, research competing components, take ample time to shop and listen carefully, simultaneously comparing your final choices if possible. Consider the manufacturer's marketing claims with a grain of noise, albeit reduced.

Hurt my ears (2008-08-02)
I bought these with high expectations. I am returning them because whatever frequency is used in the noise canceling technology actually hurt my ears. I agree with other reviewers that the cover to the battery chamber is a flimsy plastic and could break off easily. Plus, closing the battery door, which should take a nanosecond, took me awhile because the fit is so tight, you have to close it in a certain way. When I did have the headphones on, they seemed to do a very good job at blocking sound. Honestly, though, I am going back to the type of ear protectors worn by hunters, they block sound VERY WELL because they are so well padded.

Awesome headset, A+++++ (2008-07-24)
I had this headset before, but it got broken accidentally.
Bought for the second time and am very happy with it. Especially good for traveling on the plane, cancels a lot of noise.

Power walking is happier with my new Bose Headphons (2008-07-22)
With my new Bose QuietComfort headphones I can do my power walking and not have to stop and put the buds back in my ear. I can keep my head up
and sing as I go. Very happy with this purchase

tags : gadget

Based on the same system used for Apollo, the group of eight parachutes deploys after re-entry, ensuring the Orion capsule glides down back to terra firma for a pillow-soft landing. That's what's supposed to happen, anyway.

Here, the initial chutes that positions the craft for the main chutes' test (so, not a part of the final system) failed shortly after being dropped from a C-17 cargo plane at 25,000 feet. As you can see, it all goes downhill from there, terminating in "a landing that severely damaged the test mock-up." Well said, NASA—I'm guessing any test dummies inside for pressure measurements had to be scraped off the desert floor with a knife.
More <del datetime="2008-08-20T09:55:01+00:00">abuse</del> news for iPhone lovers as Vodafone released the plans which include voice as well as data. For a new postpaid user, there are three plan options - iPhone 499 (Rs. 499), iPhone 799 (Rs. 799) and iPhone 999 (Rs. 999). On the calling front, these plans will have free 199, 249 and 299 minutes (local & STD) respectively. All local calls go at 60 paise flat while STD at Re. 1. SMS charges are 1/2/5 (local/national/international). Heavy internet users will be disappointed because there is no unlimited data plan to go for. The free data usage per month for these plans is 50MB, 250MB and 600MB.

For existing Vodafone customers, you can add a data pack which has the options of Rs. 199 giving 50MB free, Rs. 499 for 250MB and Rs. 699 for 600MB.

Prepaid users need to buy a data bonus card which will cost Rs. 100 with no free usage.	5 paise per 10kb for additional data transfer.

The final interpretation is that locked iPhones on sale without any contract.

It is without a doubt if you are able to parade a Mobiado handset around, you’re pretty much set for life. The Mobiado Lucido is no different, as it comes with a combination of sapphire crystal, stainless steel and aircraft aluminum in the final product. There will only be 200 of these circling around the world, so getting spare parts would be pretty much out of the question - hence, be careful while using this! Features include :-

Triband GSM/WCDMA 2100Supports MP3, MP4, eAAC+ and AAC file formats2 megapixel cameraInternal memory

No idea on pricing, but as I mentioned, this shouldn’t be cheap in any sense of the word if its pedigree is anything to go by.
