Last week Nokia unveiled its much anticipated Comes with Music (CwM) proposition, whereby Nokia will bundle a phone with unlimited music downloads for a year. While Nokia also unveiled the 5800 XpressMusic phone, its flagship CwM device and its first handset with a touch screen, what was notable at the launch was the absence of its mobile operator partners, according to Ovum.

Nokia CwM devices combine a mobile phone with a year's free unlimited subscription to the CwM store. At the end of the contract, consumers can keep all the downloaded music, continue the service if they upgrade their phone, or buy a la carte from the Nokia Music Store.

Ovum analysts Adam Leach and Mark Little commented that Nokia has been bullish with its launch of CwM. Although its target audience of young music enthusiasts rely on operator-subsidised handsets, don't have credit cards and can't afford OTA downloads without flat-rate data plans, Nokia is not waiting for operator support on the ground. Perhaps Nokia surmises that it is this very bullishness that will push the operators into supporting a music service in direct competition with their own.

Nokia's new music service may eventually be seen by consumers as an exciting revolution that lowers the cost of exploring and discovering a sizeable choice of music. However, it currently risks being seen by operators as a disruption to business as usual with their most important handset provider.

CwM phones will be offered at a premium that is shared with the music labels. However, if operators have to absorb or heavily subsidise the phones it will cost them dearly; if not the cost will be dropped in the laps of credit-strapped youngsters.

Nokia emphasises that CwM has value and is not free, and as such generates income for artists and the music industry. The business model pays out a share of handset sales to labels and artists that is in proportion to that of downloads, plus limited supplementary payments over certain download levels.

This protects Nokia's margins from bored teens with too much time and a spare terabyte or two, but not from the bandwidth charges that a highly successful CwM service could create. That said, Liz Schimel, Nokia's head of music services and software, is confident that the CwM service will make a profit for Nokia and the labels.

Nokia announces its first touch-screen phone: the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

At launch three Nokia phones will come with music: the new Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, the Nokia N95 8GB and the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic. The 5800 will be the flagship device for the CwM service and will be available in the fourth quarter of 2008 at a cost of about US$378 (before subsidies); however, its initial launch will be limited to seven countries: Spain, Russia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, India, Taiwan and the United Arab Emirates.

Nokia intends the 5800 to be a global phone, and other territories will follow shortly including major European markets. The time lag to get the phone launched in other European markets is due to the time taken to produce operator variants for the device, hinting that mobile operators will be offering the CwM service to their customers.

For a mid-tier non-N-Series device, the 5800 is well specified. Aside from the 640×360 touch screen, which is enabled through a new release of the S60 platform, some of its highlights include: HSDPA, WLAN, A-GPS, Bluetooth, 3.2 megapixel auto-focus camera with dual-LED flash, stereo surround sound speakers, TV out, an accelerometer, proximity sensor and haptic feedback. This feature set represents great value for money for the consumer at a little over half the price of the Apple iPhone 3G (before operator subsidies).

Moreover, if the CwM proposition remains at the £129.95 (US$176) price point when bundled with the 5800 then for a little over the price of an iPod Nano the consumer gets a music player, a 3G phone and unlimited music for a year.

Nokia 5800 together with S60 5th edition SDK should encourage greater participation from third-party developers

Nokia's use of its S60 platform to power the 5800, together with its mass-market positioning, is an attempt by Nokia to motivate a greater number of developers to build third-party applications and services for its devices.

S60 5th edition is compatible with the previous S60 3rd edition; this gives developers an addressable market of approximately 60 million devices. Despite this significant installed base of S60 devices, Nokia has yet to leverage its full potential. There have been approximately 6,000 applications written for S60 since its first release back in 2001.

This can be compared directly to 3,000 applications written for the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch (with over 10 million downloads) since its launch in July of this year. Apple has achieved significant developer momentum for the iPhone in a short period of time, and this momentum is driving both demand and revenues for Apple. The 5800 and other mass-market devices, together with its recently announced strategy to provide S60 on an open source basis through the Symbian Foundation, should help Nokia achieve greater developer momentum for its platform."

Gsmarena have posted their review of the Samsung L700. Here are the key features, main disadvantages and final conclusion.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_h5hOmDEy1n4/SOurtezJpZI/AAAAAAAA-c0/JO4ySzfPwSE/s320/l700.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5254482188107883922" />

Key features
•Metallic body and solid construction
•Quad-band GSM support plus GPRS and EDGE
•UMTS 2100Mhz with video calls
•2.1" display with a resolution of 176 x 220 pixels
•2 megapixel fixed focus camera with LED flash
•microSD card slot (up to 8GB)
•Stereo Bluetooth (A2DP)
•FM radio with RDS
•Office document viewer
•Smart dialing
•ShoZu integration (direct image and video uploads)
•Basic Google integration
Main disadvantages
•Relatively low display resolution
•Trimmed down user interface as compared to Samsung seniors
•Video recording tops out at QCIF resolution
•Poor web browser

Samsung L700 is a nice attempt to bring more style to the lower midrange market. Brushed metal finish and 3G are all it takes to get noticed in this segment. That said, the metal gear will come in handy, as the L700 will have some heavy competition blows to ward off.

Typical for the price bracket, strong assets are offset against some annoying shortcomings. The Samsung L700 trimmed down user interface does the solid and classy exterior no justice. It lacks customization options and has a poor picture gallery, which takes away some from the capable 2 megapixel shooter. The underperforming web browser fails to take full advantage of 3G data speed. There's a really good music player but audio quality is a letdown.

Still the Samsung L700 sports Smart dialing, ShoZu and Google integration, and an office document viewer that might be enough to set it apart. Using it as a Bluetooth 3G modem for your notebook is also an option, so not all is lost in the web department.

In the end it's a matter of priorities and above all - pricing. Anyway, the L700 seems a viable alternative to most handsets in the target segment of 100-150 euro, but another unfortunate trade off can't go unnoticed. Samsung L700 looks above its class, but performs below its looks.

SAFA expects to launch its prosumer mp3 player named Bandi in Korea market, which looks much like candy. It will be available in October. Its available in 5 colors, green, white, black, pink (for girls?) and blue. Adopting a 1.5-inch OLED display and flash memory from Samsung, the Bandi features touch scroll, decent sound quality and distinctive GUI like a lightning bug.

The Media Port UP300 and UP300x video headset aims to be a wearable computer. The device basically looks like a pair of headphones with a small display, but has some nice specs. It features up to 8GB of flash memory for videos, music and file storage, Wi-Fi, and even, get this, a full internet browser.

The 300x model, even sports motion control. Browsing may be a challenge, who knows. You can also use the Wi-Fi connection to download audio and video content directly. The 300x will cost you $587. Looks like we are now on our way to becoming the Borg. If the next one requires that you dock yourself in a borg ship, I’m heading for the hills.

USB drives are usually far from having an earthy appeal. However, these new Mahjong flash drives are exactly that. Yes, it is still just a USB drive, but if it’s something you carry around a lot you might as well pay a few extra dollars (within reason) to have something that reflects your personal style. After all, if it’s out of your price range it’s really not going to matter if it does look perfect for you. Nobody likes those silly designer drives and their overly expensive prices that no common human being could ever afford.

The drives come in two different wood styles and then the option of either 8GB or 16GB. Then you can flip through and find which designs to place onto the drive. You can also have your name engraved onto the drive. Sadly this is one of those annoying products that although it is very cool, it is very expensive. It is currently sold for $400 just depending on what size you grab.

Other than Flash, there's one key feature missing from the iPhone and
every other browser-equipped handset: Firefox. Fortunately, Mozilla has confirmed that the first alpha version of Firefox mobile will be available
in the coming weeks.

Mozilla CEO John Lilly told the San Jose Mercury that his company has
been working toward an open-platform mobile browser similar to the
current desktop version of Firefox.

"We want to make sure that the Web on mobile is more like the Web than
what the mobile industry offers today, which is closed, separate
networks and not a very good information-getting experience for the
user," Lilly said. "The first thing is to bring Firefox to mobile
devices. We’re working on that, and we’ll see some alphas in a few
weeks."

This sounds quite exciting. Think about how much Firefox add-ons would enhance your mobile browsing experience. What'd be really cool is a touchscreen version of All-in-One Gestures,
which allows you to program custom mouse gestures to execute commands
such as spell check, switching windows, opening a new tab and so on.

What do you got for us, Firefox? We'll have to wait and see in the coming weeks.

With all the distraction around kids these days, it can get pretty tough to have them concentrate on their studies. Why not make education fun with the Leapfrog Crammer Study & Sound System? This is a homework and study device that targets kids who are in third grade all the way to eight, enabling them to download not only questions but flash cards onto the device while attempting the quizzes themselves when traveling. It even comes with a built-in MP3 player so that you can groove to your favorite tunes while answering those quizzes, although there are some people who find it much easier to concentrate on their studies without any background noise.

The Crammer handheld is a great replacement for tons of books, tipping the scales at just 4.6 ounces. Despite its diminutive size, it is able to navigate through over 16,000 mathematics, social studies and science quiz questions based on leading school textbooks. All a student needs to do is connect the Crammer device to their PC or Mac and start consolidating all the content on the handheld. Students also have the choice to create thousands upon thousands of digital flash cards for virtually any subject online for a portable study session. There is an integrated 10,000 word Spanish translator that will auto-populate Spanish-to-English and English-to-Spanish flash cards while providing even audio pronunciation for each Spanish word.

The Crammer also comes with 1GB of memory that is able to store up to 10 hours of audio. You will be able to download new content via LeapFrog’s proprietary online resource known as the LeapFrog Learning Path. Parents who are thinking of picking up the Crammer will be able to do so for just $59.99, which is much cheaper than a handheld console and will definitely aid kids in their studies using a much more technologically advanced manner instead of poring over tome after tome.
