Nokia’s road to establishing an open-source Symbian Foundation has just been cemented with Samsung’s reported acceptance of Nokia’s offer to buy-out Samsung’s shares in Symbian. Samsung is the last remaining share-holder in Symbian that stands between Nokia and their Symbian Foundation initiative. With their offer accepted by Samsung, Nokia will have ownership rights to the entire Symbian code-base, setting up the Finnish cellphone manufacturer to hand over the code-base to an open-source Symbian organization, the Symbian Foundation, that will allow any and all developers to jump on board the Symbian-ship.

With mounting pressure from Windows Mobile, the iPhone OS, and of course Google’s Android, Nokia’s move to bring Symbian to the open-source table is logical. Nokia will have put up about $410 million to buy out all Symbian shareholders, which is no small amount. So it’s clear that Nokia is going to be backing Symbian for the foreseeable future.

More than 15,000 Sprint users to benefit from additional wireless connectivity on campus

OVERLAND PARK, Kan.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 3, 2008--Students, faculty, staff and visitors at Vanderbilt University and Medical Center (VUMC) will now have additional wireless connectivity on campus. Sprint (NYSE:S), a long-time provider of wireless services to this campus, will provide an upgrade to the existing system, including additional network coverage on both the Nationwide Sprint Network and the Nextel National Network covering eight buildings on campus, an area of 3.8 million square feet.

In 2004, Sprint installed an in-building system throughout the medical center at the university, including four CDMA and two iDEN towers on campus, a Sprint retail location on-site, and a dedicated account sales and support team housed on the campus. Advancements in technology, infrastructure modifications, and upgrades at VUMC increased the demand for additional network capability on the campus.

With the new expansion of Sprint's in-building solutions, VUMC employees and staff will have access to Sprint's suite of differentiated solutions, including Sprint Mobile Broadband, Group Connect and Nextel Direct Connect.

The Vanderbilt Office of Emergency Communications (Flight Com), which operates much like a 911 dispatch center, will use Nextel handsets to dispatch and maintain two-way communications with internally tiered emergency response teams within the medical center. Those teams include trauma, STAT, RRT and paramedics. "The Nextel Direct Connect functionality allows dispatchers to simultaneously dispatch large groups of responders and support staff," explained Jeff Gray, communications manager for Vanderbilt LifeFlight and the office of Emergency Communications. "Previously all dispatch to these teams was done by pager. Responders now have reliable two-way communications with dispatch that allows for additional directions or resources."

Employees and staff will also have access to Sprint Integrated Office, a solution used in both the hospital and other areas of the university. For example, within a hospital setting this solution is used to contact a nurse on duty. It allows the call to roll over from one nurse to another in case no one answers. The last call number in the group terminates to a desk phone, ensuring no call goes unanswered and unattended.

"Continuous and reliable communications across a large campus is key to enhanced customer experience and worker productivity, thus making wireless connectivity a huge priority," says Darlene Braunschweig, vice president, Converged Network Solutions at Sprint. "At Sprint, we understand the needs of our customers and in return offer them a portfolio of converged solutions that meet their day-to-day operational requirements. This mutual understanding is the foundation of our continued strong partnership with Vanderbilt University and Medical Center."

Sprint is a leader in providing enhanced in-building and campus-wide network consulting, integration and fixed mobile convergence solutions. Sprint designs, deploys and maintains wireless networks and mobility solutions that deliver the productivity and efficiency of voice and data communications to virtually anywhere a business and its employees need them. The Converged Network Solutions team offers 24/7 technical support and manages all stages of the customer-deployment process, from the initial requirements assessment through installation and deployment with consultant-grade methods, procedures and tools. For more information about Sprint CNS, please visit www.sprint.com/cns.

About Sprint Nextel

Sprint Nextel offers a comprehensive range of wireless and wireline communications services bringing the freedom of mobility to consumers, businesses and government users. Sprint Nextel is widely recognized for developing, engineering and deploying innovative technologies, including two wireless networks serving nearly 52 million customers at the end of the second quarter 2008; industry-leading mobile data services; instant national and international push-to-talk capabilities; and a global Tier 1 Internet backbone.
LONDON, United Kingdom – 2 September 2008 – Symbian Limited, the market leader in open operating systems for mobile phones, today released the following unaudited financial and operational figures for the second quarter ended 30 June 2008:

Highlights – Q2 2008 as at 30 June 2008
225.9 million cumulative Symbian OS™ units shipped across 249 different phone models since the formation of Symbian
During Q2, 19.6 million Symbian mobile phones shipped to consumers worldwide an increase of 5% on Q2 2007. As expected, average royalty per unit declined as licensees migrate onto v9 of Symbian OS with a licensing pricing structure designed to significantly increase market adoption
At the end of Q2, seven Symbian licensees had 92 phone models in development, an increase of 48% on Q2 2007 (62 models) - the highest ever achieved
In Q2, eight handset vendors including the world’s five leading vendors, were shipping 159 mobile phone models, the majority of which were based on Symbian OS v9, including the latest release of Symbian OS v9.3, optimized for convergence
14 new models commenced shipment in Q2 including the Motorola Z10, Nokia E71, Nokia N78 and Nokia 6220, Samsung G810, Sony Ericsson G700 and Sony Ericsson G900, and several handsets for the NTT DOCOMO FOMA™ network including the SO906i, F906i and SH906iTV
76% growth in consulting services from £5.1 million in H1 2007 to £9.0 million in H1 2008 driven by a demand for Symbian services resulting from a broader and deeper range of customer mobile phone products in the pipeline
Symbian announced the ‘Symbian Partner Network’ (SPN) program, replacing the Platinum Program. The SPN offers new benefits including improved access to online developer resources, and a lower membership fee
9,834 third-party Symbian applications are now commercially available, a 25% increase on 30 June 2007 (7,888 applications). Source: Symbian research, see Notes to Editors
On 24th June, marking Symbian’s 10 year anniversary, Nokia announced its intent to acquire the share of Symbian Limited that it did not already own (approximately 52%). The transaction is expected to be completed during the second half of 2008 and is subject to regulatory approval and customary closing conditions
Simultaneously, industry leaders including AT&T, LG Electronics, Motorola, Nokia, NTT DOCOMO, Samsung Electronics, Sony Ericsson, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments and Vodafone announced plans to establish the Symbian Foundation, which will combine Symbian OS with S60, UIQ and MOAP(S) to create the world’s leading unified, royalty free mobile software platform. The Foundation is expected to start operating during the first half of 2009, subject to the closing of the acquisition of Symbian Ltd by Nokia

Nigel Clifford, Symbian CEO, commented:
“We are pleased to report that a total of 19.6 million Symbian mobile phones were shipped over 250 major network operators globally in the quarter. Symbian celebrated its tenth anniversary at the end of June, with a cumulative total of 225.9 million Symbian mobile phones shipped since formation. This number is based on nearly 250 models, designed and shipped by the world’s leading handset manufacturers.

In ten years we've achieved an enormous amount. Together with our customers we have invented, built and continue to lead the smartphone market. We are particularly pleased that our customers have reported that Symbian mobile phones are strong contributors to their financial performance and that each of our licensees has shipped at least one new Symbian mobile phone model since the beginning of 2008.

We’ve worked hard to extend the close collaboration with our customers and operators and have built a strong product pipeline. Our highly innovative product roadmap will ensure that Symbian OS continues to lead in the high-end converged device and smartphone markets whilst its penetration into the mid-range segments increases. As proof of this, there are now 159 Symbian phone models available in the global market from eight handset vendors – a rise of 30% over last year – and another 92 phone models are in development.

Yes, every blog’s been going on about Google’s soon to be released open source browser: Google Chrome. It should actually be released by now as the Official Google Blog did mention it would be available ‘tomorrow’ on the 1st of Sept. Nevertheless, if you haven’t seen the comic strip that Google’s published, here are some screenshots below, the rest (a few parts, quite long) are at the link below.

You might think with Firefox and IE and many other browsers out there that’s consistently gaining popularity, why should there be yet another browser? Well it seems Google’s watching from the backend of the internet for sometime and doesn’t feel that any of the browsers we currently have are nearly as good as the idea that they have in mind, the rather direct way to put it, Google’s decided to launch their own to put things straight and more! Their aim is simple, their browser will be just like their brand which has almost been built into most people’s basic underlying instinct, that Google is simple, easy to use, clean and slick and direct. Just like its search engine, Chrome will be lightweight, it will get you where you want to go with performancee and that means nothing getting in the way of your web surfing experience - that’s just my quick summary, here’s the official word, see for yourself…

So why are we launching Google Chrome? Because we believe we can add value for users and, at the same time, help drive innovation on the web.

All of us at Google spend much of our time working inside a browser. We search, chat, email and collaborate in a browser. And in our spare time, we shop, bank, read news and keep in touch with friends — all using a browser. Because we spend so much time online, we began seriously thinking about what kind of browser could exist if we started from scratch and built on the best elements out there. We realized that the web had evolved from mainly simple text pages to rich, interactive applications and that we needed to completely rethink the browser. What we really needed was not just a browser, but also a modern platform for web pages and applications, and that’s what we set out to build.

On the surface, we designed a browser window that is streamlined and simple. To most people, it isn’t the browser that matters. It’s only a tool to run the important stuff — the pages, sites and applications that make up the web. Like the classic Google homepage, Google Chrome is clean and fast. It gets out of your way and gets you where you want to go.

Under the hood, we were able to build the foundation of a browser that runs today’s complex web applications much better. By keeping each tab in an isolated “sandbox”, we were able to prevent one tab from crashing another and provide improved protection from rogue sites. We improved speed and responsiveness across the board. We also built a more powerful JavaScript engine, V8, to power the next generation of web applications that aren’t even possible in today’s browsers.

We’ll keep everyone updated as to when the download link will be made available to over 100 countries worldwide (for Windows and Mac users)… As for now, click here to check out the Google Chrome comic strip…

Google, in its attempt to dominate all markets, is launching a line of automotive rims today, Google Chrome. I didn't really read the article, but I'm sure they're expensive and we'll see them in rap videos.

EDIT: Ha, turns out Google Chrome is a web browser.

On the surface, we designed a browser window that is streamlined and simple. To most people, it isn't the browser that matters. It's only a tool to run the important stuff -- the pages, sites and applications that make up the web. Like the classic Google homepage, Google Chrome is clean and fast. It gets out of your way and gets you where you want to go.

Under the hood, we were able to build the foundation of a browser that runs today's complex web applications much better. By keeping each tab in an isolated "sandbox", we were able to prevent one tab from crashing another and provide improved protection from rogue sites. We improved speed and responsiveness across the board. We also built a more powerful JavaScript engine, V8, to power the next generation of web applications that aren't even possible in today's browsers.

Sure, okay, but why did they call it chrome?

We named the program Chrome because The Geekologie Writer posted a sweet-ass chromed Lamborghini last week and that shit was dope. Also, Icewolf sounded stupid.

Icewolf sounded stupid? You people are crazy. That's the awesomest fucking name I've heard in a while.

Google Chrome is set to be the third contender in a new round of "browser wars", competing with Microsoft's Internet Explorer and its rival Mozilla Firefox. Chrome is touted to be faster, more stable and more secure than the alternatives and was designed specially for next-generation web content – such as video, web-based games, chat and internet banking.Vice president of product management Sundar Pichai and engineering director Linus Upson said the company's developers had set out to "completely rethink" the concept of a web browser.

"On the surface, we designed a browser window that is streamlined and simple... Under the hood, we were able to build the foundation of a browser that runs today's complex web applications much better," they said in a post on Google's official blog. The announcement comes one day after Google sent a press release about Chrome to journalists in Europe in the form of a comic book, which quickly spread online. The 38-page comic book attempted to explain the technical concepts behind the web browser in layman terms.

"As you may have read in the blogosphere, we hit 'send' a bit early on a comic book introducing our new open source browser, Google Chrome," Mr Pichai and Mr Upson said."As we believe in access to information for everyone, we've now made the comic publicly available."We will be launching the beta version of Google Chrome tomorrow in more than 100 countries."Like Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome will be open source – meaning that other developers can contribute to the project or use it as a template for their own work.Firefox is one of the most well-known examples of the open source code ideology, a principle of software development that states that the technology behind a product be made freely available and that encourages community development.
http://feeds.feedburner.com/blogspot/lDpW

Of course you can’t just waltz in a Sony Center to buy a PSP for that price. You are only eligible to get a PSP for $35 a pop with selected Home Theater or Receiver products.

Back in 2006, Oscar Diös heard there was a dead Boeing 747-200 built in 1976 on one of the runways at Arlanda Airport, the largest international airport in Sweden, north of Stockholm. It was once owned by a Swedish company called Transjet, who used it to fly muslim pilgrims to Mecca, as well as doing charter flights around the world until it was grounded for "organizational problems" in 2002. The noble Jumbo was in a bad state, but Oscar saw the possibilities right away. Probably after way too many glasses of akvavit that day, Diös thought he had the perfect idea: to buy the 747 and convert it into a low-cost hotel.

I was getting ready to expand my hostel business in 2006 when I heard about an old wreck of an aircraft for sale at Arlanda. Since I had for a long time wanted to establish my business at Arlanda I didn’t hesitate for a second when this opportunity struck.

The connection doesn't seem too logic. In fact, it may even seem crazy to most, but it is not. After all, Oscar is the modest owner of the hostel Uppsala Vandrarhem och Hotell, in Uppsala, so he must know how expensive is to actually find a terrain near a busy airport like Arlanda, then actually build an entire hotel from scratch.

That's why, when he learnt about the dead Jumbo, Oscar only saw cheap space for rooms and decided it was time to continue his inexpensive hotel business right next to Arlanda. He thought that, being the busiest, largest international airport in his country, there was going to lots of clients looking for cheap accommodation.

However, from buying the airplane to setting up the hostel there was a long way. First he needed to get the OK from the authorities of Sigtuna, which is the town that controls the terrains in which the Arlanda Airport is based. He had the perfect pitch for them: it was going to be a unique landmark, he thought. He wanted to place it right at the entrance of the airport itself, on top of a concrete foundation with the landing gear tied to two steel cradles. The authorities heard the story and, surprisingly enough, they agreed to the plan and granted him permission to set it up.

The hotel itself was also a challenge. It wasn't going to be as easy as to install a few beds, and start selling curry kyckling macka, small beer cans, lousy pot coffee, and peanut bags at the plane second level cafeteria. The Boeing 747-200 interior—with 450 seats—needed to be completely dismantled and sanitized. Then, it needed to be insulated, divided into 25 rooms (each of them 6 square meters, with 3 meters to ceiling), and completely rewired. It also needed new plumbing, bathrooms, sanitation, and a new climate control system, since the windows on planes are fixed and can't be opened. And to finish it all, the whole result had to adhere to the strict construction policies of Sweden.

At the end, and after a two year odyssey, he did it: the Jumbo Hostel—as Oscar called his creation—has been towed to its final destination, and bookings will start in December. All in the name of inexpensive accommodation, pilots and stewardesses sex fantasies, and crazy Swedish landmarks. Pass the akvavit Oscar, next time I go to that part of the world, I'll be checking in.
