LG KC910 8 megapixel camera phone in works?

Sony Ericsson may have announced the industry first 8 megapixel camera phone, C905, but that doesn't mean other players are sleeping. Apparently, Korean LG Electronics is working on its own such device with 8 MP camera and Xenon flash, and is readying the device for October launch.

If rumors proved to be true, the upcoming KC910 model may be one of the best devices on the market. Here's what we know so far:

The device will be able to record video at 720×480 pixels and 30 frames per second.
image stabilization, face recognition
WVGA touchscreen, that's 800×480 baby!
brand new UI
very thin aluminum casing (less than 14 mm) with a hardened glass display

Nothing from above is confirmed by LG and at this stage we're not sure whether they'll actually release such a device. However, as Sony Ericsson and other handset makers slowly move toward higher megapixel count, it's fair to argue we'll see other players jumping on the "8 megapixel board" as well. Hopefully, we'll soon have some leaked photos to prove the story…

Samsung has officially announced its real iPhone killin' device. Instinct is just not smart enough to compete with Apple's handset, but the 12.5mm-thick i900 certainly is. Let's quickly go through specs, shall we:

Network: quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE + HSDPA 7.2Mbps
Wireless: stereo Bluetooth (A2DP), WiFi
Display: 3.2-inch WQVGA (240×400 pixels) touchscreen
Camera: 5 megapixels with auto-focus, featuring face and smile detection as well as auto-panorama shots
OS/UI: Windows Mobile 6.1 with Samsung's widget-friendly TouchWiz user interface running on top of it
CPU: Marvell 624MHz (*update*)
Other: built-in GPS, accelerometer for auto-rotation, optical mouse
Two models will be sold: 8GB and 16GB, that can further be expanded with microSD memory cards
Availability: from June 2008, Europe - July 2008

And that's it! Boy do we want one. The only problem I see is that WQVGA screen which may find hard time competing with the Diamond's VGA and/or XPERIA's WVGA, though, that's not actually a problem.

Specs wise, the Sony Ericsson S500i Jemma Kid limited edition is identical to the original S500 version and features the same 2 megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth support, music player software and memory expansion slot.

AT A LONDON Dali exhibition, Samsung announced the renaming, unveiling and rebranding of the SGH-F480, which will be henceforth now known as the Tocco – the Italian for touch.

Officially launched at Mobile World Congress, the Tocco is Samsung's latest touch-screenhandset, running with a “new and totally unique UI” designed for customisation and personalising.

It’s touched up with a five-megapixel camera and a 240x320 2.8-inch 262K QVGA LCD display, with the Access net browser built-in. Users can bust their lug-holes to the integrated FM radio, full music recognition functions, with storage for 240MB of internal music - expandable to 8GB on SD card.

Samsung Tocco – The Dali interpretation

The UI looks rather akin to Windows Sidebar in Vista, with widgets having a “drag and drop” ability. Some of these include the radio player, music player and other funky personal wonderments like birthday reminders.

As with the extremely popular Samsung G600, we, in the UK, took the lead in the creative aspects of this inspirational phone, such as the advertising and naming of the phone, to effectively target the UK market,” said Mark Mitchinson, vice president, Samsung Mobile UK and Ireland

The phone offers high-end camera features, such as automatic face detection technology and a sophisticated image stabiliser. The Tocco also touts 7.2Mbps HSDPA along with 3hrs talktime/250hrs standby.

Samsung has thrown the money at the launch with an extensive advertising campaign in the UK totalling £3.5million: £1.5 million for TV, £1.3m for online and out-of-home, 350K for press, 170K on experiential and 100K on online and PR. Grateful thanks to our anonymous and wonderful source.

MSIs GX600X TurboBook gets inspected, reviewed

Surely you remember that G600 that MSI showcased at CeBIT, right? We know you're sitting in stunned silence just thinking back, so we'll move forward anyway. The crew over at TweakTown managed to get ahold of the GX600X TurboBook, and rather than just frolicking in fields of flowers with it, they put this puppy to the test. Unlike the vast majority of MSI lappies, this particular one manages to stand out somewhat, with a relatively loud design and a fairly potent set of components to boot. Reviewers found it to be a "peak performer" with "excellent overclocking capabilities," and while the logos may catch a few eyes, these critics felt that those very decals may deter folks from buying an otherwise solid machine. Nevertheless, head on down to the full review -- you may find yourself surprisingly attracted to an MSI. Imagine that.

Ricoh introduces the G600 - Digital Camera

G600 is the latest digital camera released by Ricoh, priced at $700 thanks to the compact size & rugged characteristics, more specifically being dust-proof, waterproof - maximum of 1 meter - as well as shock-proof with drops of 1.5 meters set as the highest it can handle.

In the inside, the new Ricoh G600 has 52MB of memory, and a 10MP sensor with 5x optical zoom. The 2.7-inch display can go underwater to shoot photos, and record videos at 30 frames-per-second.

Mainly developed for professionals requiring a sturdy and compact digital camera, the Richo G600 replaces the G500.

Ricohs G600 and Kodaks disposable camera: separated at birth?

There is definitely a likeness there. However, if pressed, I would probably pick the Ricoh since it’s a full-featured, water-and-dust-resistant 10-megapixel digital camera and not a shady plastic box with a bit of film inside. It’s basically made for outdoor use when skiing, camping, at the beach and so on, so you don’t have to worry about sand, snow, or water spoiling your nice new camera.

It’s got the features you like - decent 2.7″ LCD, 5x optical zoom (doesn’t protrude from the body, thank you Ricoh), 3200 ISO (though I’d try not to use that if I were you), and so on. Unfortunately it costs £350, which is a little less than $700. Oh man. Maybe I’ll wait until Christmas or something.

Samsung head steps down amid scandal

Rocked by scandal and fraud investigations, Samsung's CEO Lee Kun-hee has announced his resignation as Chief of Samsung. Following a tax evasion indictment, Lee will be relinquishing control of the Samsung Group after 20 years at the helm.

"(I) deeply apologise for causing concern to the nation and will take full responsibility for that," said Lee.

Lee's son, along with four other high-level executives, have also stepped down.

The shuffle was said to be an effort to increase the company's transparency following a corruption investigation launched in January. Still, "This cannot be considered a major reform measure even with Lee stepping down, because the management structure of Samsung is built up so that he can influence it as he wishes anyway," said Park Won-suk, a senior official with the People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy.

Lee's family controls the most powerful conglomerate in South Korea, and his influence extends beyond just his role as head of Samsung. Through the conglomerate and its affiliates, Lee's family controls 20% of the country's exports. The resignation is likely little more than a public overture of change at Samsung. As Stefan pointed out, powerful businessmen with more money than they know what to do with don't go to jail. They just resign and jump ship with a golden parachute.
