Casio EX Z150

Hey, Casio: Time to call Jenny Craig. Your formerly slim, sexy Exilim cameras have ballooned up like William Shatner. Witness the EX-Z150, a chunky, pocket-sagging model that looks like it has a glandular disorder. Fortunately, like the fat guy on the basketball court who hits every jumper, the Z150 quickly proves its worth.

To instantly win the mine’s-better-than-yours contest, show friends the Z150's gorgeous three-inch LCD. It’s mammoth for a camera with a sub-$200 price tag, and bright enough to see in direct sunlight. You can also fire off a group shot without having to take the customary 20 steps back to fit everybody in: The Z150's wide-angle lens (28mm) offers a dramatically broader field of view than most pocket cams. Meanwhile, the lens zooms to 4x before the digital faux-zoom kicks in—that’s a whole "x" better than other models in this price range.

Idjit-proof controls and logical onscreen menus make the Z150 a camera anyone can pick up and use sans manual, though its small, cramped control pad hurts the overall ergonomics. Users with Shatner-size fingers will have trouble. One saving grace: a dedicated video-record button. Press it to start capturing YouTube-friendly movies at 30 fps, then again to stop. Note to other camera makers: Steal this button! Casio bundles a handy YouTube uploader utility, but you have to install it the old-fashioned way: from a CD. We're spoiled by Flip Video's camcorders, which run their software when you plug 'em in.

Available in five colors (including pink for her and Corvette red for him), the Z150 tops out at 8.1 megapixels—more than adequate for the party scene (birthday and otherwise). A generous helping of “Best Shot” presets takes the guesswork out of shooting fireworks, auction photos, candlelight vigils, and the like. But as you might expect, the camera produces considerable image noise when the lights are low and the ISO high. With sufficient lighting, however, you’ll get smooth, sharp, well-balanced photos. Only the color reproduction disappoints: It’s good, but lacking that zing we see in competing models from, say, Canon.

Of course, some of Canon’s pocket shooters tend toward the bulky as well, so we can forgive the EX-Z150 its slightly excessive carriage. And we’re mad for its big screen, sweet wide-angle lens, and affordable price. Priceline Shatner would be proud. —Rick Broida

WIRED Wide-angle lens just plain kicks ass, and 4x optical zoom gets you close without using your feet. One-touch video recording and YouTube upload software make this the perfect camera for Paris/Lindsay/Bigfoot sightings.

TIRED Too thick and heavy to leave in your pocket all day. Small, stiff control pad. Snapshot colors lack pop. Battery must be removed for charging.

$200, casio.com

Form and function, how long has this debate being going? Is it better to have something that looks gorgeous but doesn’t do everything you’d like, or is it preferable to have all the functions you require but look like the back end of a horse?

This VOIP phone concept from Tatung is trying to get the balance just right with a fantastic design which is devoid of features such as an Lcd screen, which clutters unnecessarily (if you can’t remember which buttons you pressed whilst dialling you need shooting) whilst adding a retro looking antenna nub, function wise the unit features touch screen dialling, Bluetooth and only the one actual button to connect your call.

Whilst this phone is still in the prototype stage, I would expect to see it very soon in a store near you, I would buy one and I don’t even use VOIP services.

Lighter Side's Peanut Butter Machine does exactly what its name implies, in either chunky or smooth, and can be used for other varieties of nuts besides. $49.98, but I'm almost just tempted to get a Giclee print of the picture and hang it on my kitchen wall: although peanut butter technology has certainly advanced in the century since George Washington Carver traveled back through time to gift it to us from the future, I simply can not believe any device can deliver peanut butter as mana-like as in this picture. This is a photograph of the Platonic Ideal of peanut butter making machines: I can not believe it is the actuality.

Here she is: the queen of CEDIA 2008. The first construction material to ever wear the oh-so-coveted THX certification badge. We're not even close to kidding folks -- the Quiet Solutions (formerly known as Serious Materials, evidently) reps were totally gung ho about this $1,495 to $2,495 door, and we just couldn't walk by without giving you a look at what a THX-certified door, um, looks like. Notice the gorgeous brass handles, sturdy (and we mean sturdy) construction and the word "sucker" lightly printed on the rear. Just kidding, we know there's a time and place for this and all, but we couldn't help but chuckle. Oh, and don't run into this thing while perusing the gallery at Engadget HD --face-first into a 220-pound object is no fun.

No surprise that JVC is showing off their own ultra high-def 10MP wonder projector, since JVC's D-ILA tech also powers the one we saw from Meridian a few weeks ago. That means it should deliver the same stunning 4,096x2400 resolution image—it's like IMAX in your house. Or you can watch up to four full HD screens at once. The D-ILA tech, with its ridiculous pixel density, is also what lets this thing be a whole 65 percent tinier than conventional ultra HD projectors.

You can stack two to increase the light output, though it generates 3500 ANSI Lumens already. It's also got an ethernet port, so you can control multiple projectors from your PC, and receive error reports by email. Price isn't mentioned, but the Meridian setup was $185,000, so you can use your imagination.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

JVC UNVEILS 10 MEGAPIXEL ULTRA HIGH DEFINITION PROJECTOR
4K2K D-ILA Projector Provides Four Times the Resolution of Full HD

Denver, CO (September 3, 2008) – JVC unveils the world's smallest 4K2K ultra high definition projector, the DLA-SH4K. Based on the company's new proprietary 1.27-inch 10 megapixel D-ILA devices, the DLA-SH4K projects images at greater than 4 times the resolution and clarity of the industry's latest full high definition projectors. The higher resolution will bring a new level of reality to aircraft simulators, medical analysis, 3D display, command and control, museums, theme parks, and ultra high-end home theaters.

The DLA-SH4K will be unveiled at CEDIA September 3 – 6, 2008 and will be on display throughout the show in the JVC Theater located at The Denver Center for the Performing Arts next to the Denver convention center.

The projector's chassis achieves a remarkable 65% reduction in size compared with conventional projectors in its class. This was achieved in part by using JVC's latest 1.27-inch Direct Drive Image Light Amplifier (D-ILA) devices and a new optical system. D-ILA is a proprietary form of Liquid Crystal on Silicone (LCOS), a reflective technology that offers far greater pixel density than competing devices.

The D-ILA devices used in the DLA-SH4K provide a native 4096 x 2400 resolution—multi-screen display modes that allow users to view up to four Full HD screens at a time. A new optical design featuring an 825 Watt Xenon lamp generates a light output of 3500 ANSI Lumens and features adjustable lamp power that ranges from 825 to 660 watts.

Two DLA-SH4Ks can be stacked for increased light output. In addition, the projector can be inclined up to a ± 90-degree tilt angle and has a horizontal lens shift of ±25% and vertical shift of ±50%, which enables flexible installation.

The DLA-SH4K includes DVI-D (dual-link) x 4 input terminals that accept a wide variety of input resolutions. In addition to the RS-232C and USB connections, an Ethernet interface makes adjustment and installation from web browsers on PCs possible. Furthermore, networking allows multiple projectors to be operated with a single PC and an email function also enables the sending out of error messages and lamp replacement reminders.

JVC will offer two lenses for the projector, the GL-MS4015SZG 1.22x zoom lens for screens up to 300 inches, and the GL-MS4011SG short throw lens for screens up to 250 inches. The DLA-SH4K is available immediately. For more information and photos on the DLA- SH4K D-ILA projector, please visit JVC's Web site at http://referenceseries.com.

ABOUT JVC PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTS COMPANY
JVC Professional Products Company, located in Wayne, New Jersey, is a leading manufacturer of home theater products and security products in addition to a complete line of broadcast and professional video systems.
As people buy more expensive digital cameras in hopes of taking better pictures and sharing more photos with friends and family, many have discovered that a few all-too-familiar problems won't go away no matter how many megapixels you buy -- like clunky PC utilities that seem determined to take the fun out of photography, and labor-intensive photo-sharing sites that feel like a chore unto themselves.

So today, Google is launching a one-two combo of Picasa 3.0 (beta), the next generation of its free photo-editing software, alongside a major technology upgrade to its free online photo-sharing site, Picasa Web Albums.

Picasa Web Albums now helps users automatically sort and share their online photos based on who's in each picture. Instead of requiring you to painstakingly label your photos one-by-one, the 'name tags' feature in Picasa Web Albums uses advanced clustering technology to quickly group together pictures of the same person. And new features in Picasa 3 make getting your photos online easier than ever, with a one-click 'web sync' that uploads an album and keeps it updated on the web when you make changes on your PC. Technophobes and photography buffs alike will find new ways to have fun with their photo collections and unlock the full potential of their digital cameras -- producing great-looking photos that can be shared in a snap.

Picasa Web Albums (http://picasaweb.google.com/) is fast and easy photo sharing from Google. Picasa Web Albums now features a remodeled user interface, and uses new technology to help you organize and share photos with the people you care about most:
Advanced 'name tags': Since people matter so much in your pictures, Picasa Web Albums has a brand-new feature called 'name tags' that helps you quickly and easily identify the people in each of your photos. If you assign name tags to a few faces in your collection, Picasa Web Albums will help you automatically find other photos with the same people so you can quickly tag your whole collection. That way, you can do things like create a special album for your grandmother that includes only photos of the two of you, create a slideshow featuring a select group of friends, or quickly share party photos with all the people who appear in your snapshots.

Share easily, no strings attached: You can share full-resolution albums for free with friends and family. Your uncle won't need need to sign up for an account to see your photos; the link he receives contains an embedded key so he can view your photos with one click. Web albums are viewable as gorgeous, full-window slideshows -- free of ads or distractions -- that load in the background so you can flip quickly from one photo to the next. You can allow visitors to download full-resolution albums to Picasa with one click -- perfect for family members who would like to print out pictures at home. You and your visitors can also directly order prints and photo gifts from not just one, but multiple retailers, like Walgreens and Snapfish.

Explore the world in pictures: A new 'Explore' section gives users a way to enjoy photos published by other Google Photos users around the world, including a 'Where in the World' game in which you guess the mystery locales of geo-tagged photos.

Picasa 3.0 beta (http://picasa.google.com/) is free desktop software for Windows that helps you organize, print, and creatively edit your photos. Picasa also integrates seamlessly with Picasa Web Albums for sharing your photos online -- with just one click in Picasa 3, you can sync albums from your PC to the web, so that any changes or additions you make on your PC are automatically reflected on your web gallery. New tools in Picasa 3 help you make professional-looking edits without any technical knowledge, including:

A drag-and-drop photo-collage tool gives you total freedom over layout and content
A powerful retouching brush to wipe out scratches and blemishes, and repair old photos.
A slideshow movie maker that uploads to YouTube with a click
Auto red-eye removal
Smart auto-cropping that guides you on how to zoom in on your subject
A fast-launching Photo Viewer to quickly inspect and manipulate images while in the Windows filesystem

As always, Picasa automatically finds and sorts the photos on your hard drive, and lets you drag and drop photos into folders or add custom tags. It leaves your original files undisturbed on your hard drive, so you don't have to worry about overwriting or altering your originals -- you can go back a year later and undo any edits you've made. And you can always download all your photos out of Picasa Web Albums.

Picasa 3.0 is available for free download at http://picasa.google.com/, and Picasa Web Albums is available for free sign-up at http://picasaweb.google.com/.

This allows the Samsung S860 to take detailed photos for printing up to poster size. With the Face Detection AF & AE function, the Samsung S860 enables the user to take better portrait pictures more easily. This function detects faces and automatically focuses on them. The brightness of the faces is adjusted optimally for beautiful portrait pictures. In macro shooting, it is now possible to take clear, natural pictures. Digital Image Stabilization (DIS) technology prevents the degradation of image clarity and color, which is sometimes found in flash photography. With DIS the effects of image blur are reduced in lower light conditions. You can even take well-exposed, sharper pictures in low light conditions without using a flash at all, which guarantees brighter and more natural pictures. The different icons, scene modes and other features are described in simple and easy to understand terms to improve the interaction between the user and camera. ISO - Auto, 80, 100, 200, 400, 800, and 1000 Flash Modes - Auto, Auto & Red-eye reduction, Fill-in flash, Slow sync, and Flash off Range - Wide 0.3m - 4.0m and Tele 0.5m - 2.1m (ISO AUTO) Self-timer - 2 seconds and 10 seconds Still Image File Format - JPEG (DCF), EXIF 2.2, and DPOF 1.1 Scene Modes - Children, Landscape, Close-up, Text, Sunset, Dawn, Backlight, Fireworks, Beach & Snow, and Night System Requirements - Pentium II 450MHz (Pentium 800MHz recommended), Windows 98SE, 2000, ME, XP, Vista, Mac OS 9.2, 10.4 or later, 64MB RAM, 200MB free space, USB port, CD-ROM drive, 1024x768 pixels, 16-bit color display compatible monitor, Microsoft DirectX 9.0C Dimensions - Approximately Width 3.66 x Height 2.44 x Depth 1.04 (93x62x26.5mm) Weight - 123 grams

Customer Reviews

It does not work - I am so crucially disappointed! (2008-09-02)
My samsung does not work. I have used one quite similar, for on the job photos, and wanted my own for a long awaited vacation and family reunion. I did not get a single picture. the LCD view finder goes completed BLACK in any outdoor light. so many missed shots! no outdoor pictures! I would have been better off with a $6.99 disposable from the drugstore. Is there Someone that knows why this happens? I am broken-hearted and sick to my stomach at the money I wasted, and the lost memories. I have never, ever heard of a camera that does not work outside!

Great camera for the price! (2008-08-29)
I chose this camera because I was on a strict budget, but (obviously) looking for the highest quality camera on the market. I've had this Samsung for a few weeks now, and have not been disappointed at all! The photographs are easy to take and come out gorgeous thanks to the 8.1 megapixels. There are also a variety of basic features and settings you can play around with in addition to the automatic one. The lag between the actual taking of a picture and when you can take another one is longer than I had hoped, but not unbearable. That is why I rated it only 4 out of 5 stars. This is a great camera for the price, I would definitely reccomend it for a friend.

NEAT LITTLE CAMERA (2008-08-28)
I bought this camera for my daughter when she went to camp. I didn't want her take the good one, but I did want her to have a camera. The AA batteries meant she didn't have to worry about charging, and taking extra kit. It has good zoom and face recognizing function, takes video and has different image functions. For $90 it was a bargain, I didn't buy the SD card with it though because, it shipped separately and incurred a shipping fee, so we bought that a local electronics store. Haven't seen it at the same price since though.

My Camera's the best! (2008-08-27)
I keep discovering many wonderful features for this product everyday..it's just terriffic!...even came with a free case and battery charger...what a thotful combination from Amazon...thanks!

Samsung S860 Power Problems (2008-08-26)
I hate this camera. Wish I could return it . I did just get i back from " repair" under warranty and it still isn't right.
It will not power on.. Sometimes if I jiggle the batteries it will come on, sometimes not. Sometimes taking the batteries out and putting them back in works, sometimes not. Real fun when you are trying to take a picture!
The last thing that happened before I returned it was the shutter stuck open.
I got it back today, put in two brand new AA batteries ( the recommended ones) and it still doesn't come on.
So......I learned that my next camera will not have AA batteries!
I am envious of you that have no problems with it.

tags : gadget
