Spontaneous restarts and dropped calls among other things were not uncommon.

Well, good news for everyone running the device is that together with Rogers, RIM has released a new OS upgrade (4.6.0.162) which should address most of the issues people were having. The Bold ships with OS 4.6.0.125, so I know there are a whole bunch of you out there that were sitting patiently waiting for this.

To get started, download the OS from RIM’s website, install the package and then open Dekstop Manager. The update should go through without a hitch. As always with any OS upgrade however, make sure you BACKUP your device.

Welcome all to Episode 3 of The Signal!

The BlackBerry Storm came rolling in this week, complete with a 90% chance of advertisements from both Verizon and Vodafone. The next BlackBerry Curve, model number 8900, also peeked its head out on T-Mobile Germany. We also take a minute to fawn over HTC’s WiMAX version of the Touch HD in Russia and pray that it’ll come to Sprint’s XOHM network sometime this century. Short episode this week on account of Will being out of commission, but we still take a good solid look at the BlackBerry Storm and where it’s going.

If I am not mistaking, I believe we told you a while ago about HTC getting ready to release one Android device and one WiMAX device by the end of the year. Well what do you know? We have the HTC Dream or the G1 which is the first Android phone. And now we have the T8290 which is a WiMAX HTC Touch.

From what we can figure out it's a 3.8 inch 480 x 800 WVGA display, WiMAX and GSM support, 802.11g WiFi and Bluetooth 2.0.

How much it costs and when it is going to be available it's still a mystery. For now the phone has Russian language written all over it so we're going to wait for HTC official news.

With the CDMA evolution pathway coming to a veritable dead-stop in the next few years, it’s been safe to assume that CDMA carriers in North America would be jumping on board the 4G LTE bandwagon in the next decade. There’s been much speculation about Telus and Bell Canada adopting the GSM evolution pathway for their next generation networks over the past months, and today it all comes to a head.

Following on an interview from a Telus exec that had the Canadian carrier considering LTE as the standard of choice for their future data network, both Telus and Bell have announced that they’ll be launching GSM service in 2010. Both carriers will be rolling out 3G HSPA networks on a fresh GSM backbone in 2010, as both Telus and Bell prepare to eventually offer 4G LTE service.

Rather than rely on their CDMA network to handle the brunt of wireless demand until LTE comes online, Bell and Telus will be offering subscribers a GSM-option (3G HSPA) alongside CDMA. By layering their HSPA network over their CDMA network, the Canadian carriers hope to make the transition to GSM technology as smooth and painless as possible for their customers.

“Bell’s transition to the global 4G LTE standard with a combined EV-DO and HSPA network path aligns us with more than 30 major carriers worldwide planning a similar move to LTE,” said Stephen Howe, CTO for Bell. “This broad global technology ecosystem will mean a fast, efficient and cost-effective network transition to 4G LTE, and access to the broadest possible range of next-generation phones and data services.”

The adoption of HSPA will expand the roaming agreement that both Bell and Telus have had in place since 2001. With Rogers’ essentially monopolizing the Canadian GSM market, Bell and Telus are working to help eachother grow into their GSM-britches. In the next couple years, we’re likely to see the Canadian market undergo a significant shakeup. More GSM competition means Canadian consumers will see the cost of wireless voice and data service drop as carriers battle for market-share.

Your next mobile phone might just be a GSM handset on Bell or Telus. Cue the champagne!

No, Google hasn’t released a new Google Maps update with Street View functionality for the Windows Mobile camp. With the new Street View functionality announced for the T-Mobile G1, iPhone/iPhone 3G, and the BlackBerry lineup of smartphones, Windows Mobile users are left out in the cold.

But, it doesn’t have to be that way.

Enterprising xda-developers member KDKobes has gotten the Java-based Google Maps 2.3.1 application for BlackBerry handsets working on his AT&T Tilt (HTC Kaiser), complete with Street View functionality. Unfortunately, location-data support and GPS integration aren’t working with this version of Google Maps running on Windows Mobile, but it’s definitely a start.

I finally got Google Maps 2.3.1 on my Tilt with the Street View function. As of right now it is not available on Windows Mobile devices through Google just Blackberry and some Java devices, but I managed to find it with this function in Java form and it is working on my Tilt. - KDKobes

Download and install KDKobes Google Maps Street View 2.3.1 here.

You might remember that when I attended the Seattle Mobius in May, I was given the European version of the HTC Touch Diamond, which for network reasons I opted to have sent to Mitchell in Australia. The Diamond version he received and reviewed was at first glance nearly identical to the Sprint version I’ll be covering today, with the exception of their back sides.

During his testing period, Mitchell found that he liked the small size of the device, the multitude of radios packed in that small package (HSDPA, WiFi, BT, GPS and FM), the sharpness of the 2.8″ VGA screen, and the 3.2 megapixel camera. Qualities which he found disappointing were the radio strength, the device’s sluggish response time when using the TouchFlo 3D interface, the battery life, the auto-screen rotation, and the faceted back which didn’t allow the device to lay flat.

Mitchell’s verdict was a reluctant Fail, and as he summarized, “I had very high hopes for the Diamond; I wanted it to wipe the smile off Apple’s face, and be a proper competitor to the unstoppable iPhone. But alas it isn’t. It has too many flaws to be a competitor, and to be honest it has too many flaws full stop.”

Can you blame me for not being too excited when it was later announced that Sprint would carry the US version?

However, with memories of the faster processor and updated ROM introduced by HTC when they released the US version of their Touch (versus its European cousin), I thought it might be worthwhile to revisit this particular device, to see if Mitchell’s complaints were still warranted.

Let’s see how the US version fared…

i.TV is one handy app for virtually everyone who enjoy watching TV and/or movies. Whether you’re looking for something interesting on a TV or what’s hot in the theaters, i.TV can help you out. As a matter of fact, the official AppStore page says that users can browse more than 144,000 TV and movie listings and 5,000+ local theaters. In addition, you can watch TV previews and movie trailers (6,000+ of these are available at the moment), view detailed show descriptions, celebrity bios and photos.

There’s also a social networking element included in the mix, allowing everyone to vote, write reviews, and share TV and movie info with friends.

The best part is the price — i.TV is free. Plus, they’ve wowed to keep improving the app and make it the ultimate TV/movies guide. Some of the features that will be available in the coming weeks and months include live TV streaming, ability to use your iPhone/iPod Touch as a remote control for your DVR, DVD rentals management and the ability to buy movie tickets right from i.TV. Nice!
