Sanyo has updated its line of tiny, waterproof videocameras, and the latest model is the Xacti E8.

The Sanyo Xacti E8 is not as suave-looking as a tuxedoed Sean Connory, but in the adventuresome department, it'll do: The company claims you can submerge it under five feet of water for up to an hour at a time (and it still won't confess). It sports the pistol-grip/raygun design that Sanyo pioneered more than four years ago with its first handheld SD-card camcorder. And it's tiny enough to conceal in an evening suit, should you decide that your own adventures require some visual proof.

While Sanyo was one of the first companies to shrink a video camera down to a truly pocketable size, the company's mini cameras haven't exactly had a reputation for quality. We're looking forward to seeing whether this model's 8 megapixel sensor and "Face Chaser" technology help make for better stills and videos.

The most remarkable thing to come out of it is the fact that all but two of them have no carrier, and are sold unlocked. Pictured is the Samsung Omnia, because you've seen enough of the XPERIA and the Touch Pro and the damned iPhone.

Sprint is spending a lot of money in attempts to slay the iPhone and give AT&T a run for their money. And while we may all snicker over how closely their new posterboy the Samsung Instinct resembles the iPhone, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Sprint has worked closely with Samsung to put a sleek iPhonesque UI over a pocketable handset that can handle video, stream TV, and offer turn-by-turn GPS.

So what did the reviewers think?

CNET
The Instinct's touch screen dominates its real estate. With support for 262,000 colors and a 432,240-pixel resolution, the display is positively gorgeous. Colors popped, graphics were vibrant, and text was crisp. Indeed, it's one of the better displays we've seen in a while...but [it] can look rather cramped...

AP
The result is a lucid, logical interface. It's not as pretty as the iPhone's, but it allows the user to quickly use e-mail, Web browsing, GPS navigation and text messaging; watch videos, live TV and photos; and listen to music and online radio.

Wall Street Journal
The touch system on the Instinct is more like that on an ancient ATM than a cutting-edge gadget, even though it has a gimmicky feedback mechanism that gives you a tiny vibration-jolt when you press an icon.

infoSync
Above all else, the Samsung Instinct made phone calls that sounded great..crisp and clean, with no static or drop-outs in our test period. Reception was a steady three bars in lower Manhattan, which seemed a bit low, but this didn't affect calling, messaging or data, so we didn't let it bother us.

PhoneMag
Messaging is a mixed bag, with the Instinct falling a little more on the corporate side than the consumer. SMS, MMS and email are all supported, with the latter playing nicely with webmail, POP/IMAP and Exchange accounts, but there’s no instant messaging client and only plain-text, not HTML emails are viewable. Attachments can be sent with outgoing email, but not opened from incoming messages.

Gizmodo
Samsung and Sprint borrowed liberally from the iPhone playbook when it came to look and feel. But the comparison itself isn't fair: The iPhone is a software platform that is growing every day, soon to have a host of applications that put it squarely in the smartphone category along with BlackBerry, Palm and Windows Mobile. The Samsung Instinct will never be mistaken for a smartphone.

We may have a new dream TV. Samsung is set to unveil an 82-inch LCD with ultra-definition resolution (3,840 by 2,160) that refreshes at 120Hz sometime this week. But equally as exciting, the display will also come in a multi-touch flavor for education purposes. That version will run at just 60Hz. Unfortunately, we have no images of either display. But what justice could a 500x300 representation do an 82-inch, 3,840x2,160 display anyway? So here's a puppy instead. There are rumors on the street, however, that point to a CDMA version of the BlackBerry Bold coming out on Verizon and Sprint not a year after AT&T, but a couple months later.

That’s right boys and girls… Verizon and Sprint may get a CDMA based BlackBerry Bold by summer’s end. Infosync World is reporting that the BlackBerry Bold will hit Verizon and Sprint in September of this year. That is just 2 months or so passed the release date of the BlackBerry Bold on AT&T.

Those of you dying to get your QWERTY on with RIM's hot new Blackberry Bold can start marking your calendars and stashing cash under the cushions -- release dates and pricing info have hit the tubes this morning. As expected, AT&T will get the Bold first in July for $300, while Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile customers will have to wait until September. Oddly, T-Mo subs will have to cough up an extra $50, which seems a little unfair. Of course, these aren't official dates and prices, so things are likely to change, but we'd say everything seems in the ballpark, wouldn't you?

Update: We got in touch with InfoSync World, where these numbers were published, and they told us that they were making estimates based on pre-release info. So nope, these aren't close to official -- but it's always fun to dream, right?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
