Americas Emergency Network has released a free mobile application called <a href="http://www.aen911.com/navteq/"target="_BLANK">AEN Mobile GPS Edition that alerts individuals about natural or manmade emergencies based on their current physical GPS location in real-time. AEN Mobile is actually a Where GPS widget that offers location based content on supported mobile devices including Nokia S60, Blackberry and Java J2ME.

Key features of AEN Mobile GPS Edition include:

• Emergencies Near Me – After the application has loaded, all bulletins within 30 miles of the device are displayed. Each item is marked [C]ritical, [I]mportant or [G]eneral to indicate the level criticality associated with the bulletin (see Page 3).
• Map This Emergency – Clicking a highlighted bulletin displays the emergency on an interactive map. Municipalities can define a specific address or coordinates of the event, as we illustrated with varying bulletin locations around Chicago O’Hare Airport.
• Display Preferences – Users can adjust the sensitivity of the application by narrowing or expanding the radius of matching events, time since posting, and number of bulletins displayed. An “All Emergency Bulletins” option has been added and turned on by default to ensure content is available during judging.
• Local Traffic Bulletins – To assist users in moving away from (or in some cases to) the scene of an emergency, NAVTEQ Real-Time Traffic Services are available from the application. Traffic bulletins within the defined radius of the device are displayed.
• Local Weather Radar – For weather-related emergencies, the application provides access to local radar and satellite images from AEN’s partner, The Weather Channel

Currently AEN Mobile GPS Edition is only available to any user with a Where developer account.

The upcoming This Is Spinal Tap Blu-ray is of course exciting to me. After all, it's been what, like seven years since I last hurled money at Rob Reiner, Christopher Guest and the rest of the lot for their well-deservedly best-selling DVD special edition. But while the Blu-ray will come with an intriguing-sounding game, this latest repackaging of the classic, due out January 20, 2009, could easily be dead on arrival, having choked on not necessarily its own vomit. For starters, it's not recorded in Dubbly.

Nope, according to the press release, it's got a 5.1 DTS HD Lossless Audio track, which is all well and good if this were, say, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, or Rob Reiner's other masterpiece, A Few Good Men. But this is Spinal Tap—er, that is, This Is Spinal Tap! No Dubbly, no dice.

I'm actually not convinced that a 1080p transfer will change the emotional tone of the movie. This is supposed to be a handheld, herky-jerky film, not some sweeping epic. How can high-def do more for those intimate moments—Fran Drescher almost not annoying, the late Bruno Kirby explaining the joy of Frank, Harry Shearer, aka Derek Smalls, trapped in his body-snatcher pod. Those don't improve with resolution.

While most of the Blu-ray's special features are identical to those from the seriously awesome DVD, the addition of a BD-Live “Create Your Own Band” game does raise an eyebrow or two. The press release provides very little about the game except that you use it to "create and customize your very own rock-star avatars," and that it will "send those other rock games back to the high-school auditorium." Bold words, MGM Home Entertainment—my only hope is that Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer are on your ass right now, making sure it's the most intentionally funny thing ever to come to BD-Live.

Press release topped with the requisite "11" joke:

THE HIGH-DEF EQUIVALENT OF ELEVEN ROCKS OUT WITH THE BLU-RAY DEBUT OF THIS IS SPINAL TAP
MGM Home Entertainment Releases Rob Reiner’s Hilarious Rockumentary Starring Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer Debuts on Blu-ray Disc January 20th

Brand New BD Exclusive Game, “Create Your Own Band” Sends Those Other Rock Games Back To The High School Auditorium

CENTURY CITY, Calif. – Ring in the New Year with the revolutionary UK rock band as This is Spinal Tap screams its way to Blu-ray Disc January 20th from MGM Home Entertainment. Directed by Academy AwardÒ nominee* Rob Reiner (A Few Good Men), This is Spinal Tap is Reiner’s directorial debut and is the “…absolutely inspired film” (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun Times) responsible for introducing mock documentaries to mainstream American audiences. Renowned comedy director Christopher Guest (Best in Show), Academy AwardÒ nominee** Michael McKean (A Mighty Wind) and Emmy AwardÒ nominee *** Harry Shearer (“Saturday Night Live”) star as the three members of the fictional heavy-metal/hard rock band Spinal Tap. Satirizing the wild personal behavior and musical pretensions of hard-rock and heavy-metal bands, This is Spinal Tap presents a second-rate band made up of aging band members who are desperately trying to cling onto what little fame they used to have. This is Spinal Tap also includes cameo appearances by renowned actors such as Billy Crystal (When Harry Met Sally), Anjelica Houston (The Addams Family) and Ed Begley, Jr. (Pineapple Express). Inducted into the National Film Registry in 2002, This is Spinal Tap has left an indelible mark on pop culture as evidenced by its numerous imitators and its esteemed spot at number one atop Entertainment Weekly’s “Top 50 Cult Movies of All Time.”

For the first time fans can own all of the special features included on the previous standard-def as well as Laserdisc versions with a brand new BD-exclusive game, “Create Your Own Band.”

This is Spinal Tap Blu-ray Disc will be available for the suggested retail price of $34.99 U.S. / $37.99 Canada.

* 1993: Best Picture (A Few Good Men)
** 2004: Best Music, Original Score (A Mighty Wind)
***1980: Outstanding Writing in a Variety or Music Program (“Saturday Night Live”)

Synopsis:

In 1982 legendary British heavy metal band Spinal Tap attempt an American comeback tour accompanied by a fan who is also a film-maker.

According to the Register, Sega is planning to launch a new handheld console next year, and it won't just play games.

The new console, called the Vision, will also play music and movies, have a built in camera, TV-Tuner and display e-books. We speculate that the battery pack will come in a separate, suitcase-sized box.

The UK will be the first place to get the Vision, and there are apparently a few prototypes to be won in London arcades. The video detailing the console has been pulled from YouTube already, but a few details survive. It will play "Java mini games", which suggests a similar experience to the "games" you can play on your cable-TV box at home.

Still, a pocket TV, despite being the ultimate 1980s throwback, could be worth buying if there are some classic Sonic games on there (ie. the first two, and no more). The Register's comments are chock-a-block with references to the Gamegear, Sega's last and fateful foray into the handheld market. It's failure was a real shame, as it was a great little device (despite poor battery life). There was even a TV-Tuner add-on.

We won't be getting too excited, though, much as a successor to the Genesis (or Megadrive) and Dreamcast would brighten our lives. This looks to be more like a souped up Tamagotchi than a full-fledged handheld gaming platform. Now, somebody port Sonic to the iPhone, already.

Sony's PSP is currently getting its butt handed to it by the Nintendo DS, but don't tell that to Sega. With its upcoming Sega Vision PMP, due out in the UK sometime in 2009, the former hardware company-turned-sub par software maker is hoping to take on the jack-of-all-trades portable market. The prognosis for such a device is OK, but then again how could it not be? After all, this is the company that brought us the 32X, Saturn, and the Dreamcast—the only direction any Sega hardware offering could go from this point forward is up.

As the comments about this device over at the Register suggest, this is one butt-ugly portable that probably shouldn't have been compared to the PSP, let alone a DS. The "games" it plays are actually Java-based affairs, and its strengths, should they materialize in 2009, would be as a portable TV, movie player, camera, and even an eBook reader.

It's a device you should probably watch in the dark or after a few pints, but it does in fact mark a return to the hardware business for Sega after two generations away from the game. We're just having trouble figuring out what the hook is. Consumers aren't likely to be swayed by simple branding, Sega's storied history or not.

 [The Register]

Update: Game's Over! Look for a transcript tomorrow! But we're all still chatting, so why not come in and say hi anyway?

It's been quite a while since we held our last IRC event, but with the equinox drawing the summer days to a wane, it's time once again to dust off the #boingboing IRC channel and spend a few hours in a rousing community game of an old favorite, Rule 34 Showdown.

Rule 34, as all men know, is the cosmic rule that demands that porn can be found on the Internet to fit any concept. The rules are simple: numerous times over the course of one hour, I will shout out a random Rule 34 Challenge.

"RULE 34: Obama French Kissing Joe Biden!" I might cry. The denizens of #boingboing will go scrambling to find a link that illicitly matches the challenge. The first three people to come up with separate links and images for the same concept will be awarded first, second and third place points of decreasing denominations. At the end of the hour, the person with the most points will be declared the official RULE 34 PORNOGRAPHER OF #BOING BOING! At least for the week. And to make it all timeless fun, we'll knock up all the links we accrue in the official transcript of the event, with the best images highlighted for fun.

This week's game will be held tonight at 4PM EDT / 1PM PDT / 9PM GMT. To play, simply come to the official #boingboing IRC channel on Freenode about 15 minutes before the game and /msg Brownlee that you'd like to play. Don't want to play? Come on by and watch.

If you've never used IRC before, you can find instructions on how to get to the channel here, or simply use the Java chat applet.

Update: Sorry! Huge time mess up in the title. It's at 4PM EDT.

Welcome to the new S60 5th Edition, which brings together a host of innovations into a single package. Smartphone users can look forward to a great user experience, boosted by the touch UI, sensors and the availability of familiar, easy-to-use tools to help developers create innovative applications.

So, let’s focus on what this latest version of the world’s favorite mobile platform offers to those of us who like to get the best from the technology in our hands.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_h5hOmDEy1n4/SOULZr3RwJI/AAAAAAAA-QE/dF4egEoSFKs/s320/s.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5252617076296761490" />
Do more and do it better

With S60 5th Edition, the whole mobile experience becomes more exciting with new touch and sensor capabilities, opening up new ways to use the mobile device. The possibilities are endless, from virtual handwriting recognition to touch-based control, from turning the device over to change the display orientation, to tapping it to cancel an alarm. These new input methods open a whole new world of excitement for end users and application developers eager to develop engaging experiences for their customers.

An unsurpassed Internet experience

S60 5th Edition also helps to deliver the best Internet experience over the mobile. The award-winning S60 browser provides full desktop-like browsing which the 5th Edition enhances by combining an improved browser engine and the touch UI. The platform fully supports multimedia, including Flash Lite 3. Regardless of the content type, S60 5th Edition can play it the way it was meant to be played.

Build what you want, using what you know

S60 5th Edition is an open platform that enables developers to create exciting mobile applications using a wide variety of development environments. It supports Web technologies, including Flash Lite and the S60 Web Runtime, which make it easy to create applications that combine Web-based data with platform functions and features. With C++, Java, and Python, on the other hand, developers can create innovative applications and extend the platform features. In addition, C++ developers can take advantage of Open C and Open C++ to leverage existing code and components from other platforms and from open source projects.

Building stand-alone Web applications is an easy way for developers to reach out to the vast market of the Internet and make it available on the mobile. Users can have instant access over their mobile to their favorite Internet content and services.

Yet S60 5th edition goes even further with its new opportunities to bring platform services to the Flash Lite and Web Runtime environments. Developers can create context-aware Flash applications and widgets that use local device information and functionality, such as GPS co-ordinates, phonebook entries and messaging functions.

Fantastic new possibilities open up. Always-on mobile access to the most relevant and useful content plus direct access to S60 platform services gives developers even more power to satisfy their customers with all the added value that only the mobile can offer.

There are many examples of how applications can combine device services and Internet data:

A widget that automatically connects to GPS to find the user’s location, then downloads local weather forecasts and mashes that with other information such as local film showings (for when it’s raining) and the location of friends to invite by SMS to the movie.
A flight booking application that adds relevant flight times to the device calendar, alerts the user if the flight is delayed, and enables one-click check-in straight from the phone.
An application that reminds the user to take their medicine, when a repeat prescription is needed, even booking an appointment with the doctor to get the new prescription.
Or how about an application that finds the nearest coffee shop from the user’s favorite chain and with one click gives step-by-step directions to it?

Built on field-proven technology

On top of all these benefits, it’s also important to remember that S60 is a highly developed and well-proven open platform that was launched in 2002. With S60 5th Edition, we now have the most reliable mobile platform in existence today.

If you want to take part and start developing applications on S60 5th Edition, the SDK is now available and includes the tools, emulator, code examples and technical documentation needed to create powerful and innovative context-aware applications.
