Mitsubishi’s 65-inch LaserVue 1080p rear-projection HDTV is priced at a hefty $7,000.The TV will be released later this month. Unfortunately, there is no word on pricing for its 73-inch version. As a reminder, the LaserVue is a laser-based HDTV, which uses an array of red, green, and blue lasers to project its image onto the screen. According to Mitsubishi, this HDTV provides a color gamut over 200% NTSC standard, and consumes less than 200 watts.

Gizmodo found some hand’s on pics of Microsoft’s new wireless Arc mouse, which we told you about some time ago. The verdict? Looks just as drool-worthy as it did back then. The $60 mouse is portable and folds in half, thanks to a “strong metal hinge,”. Apparently the USB dongle slips into the underbelly of the mouse when not in use with a simple magnet. You also get a storage bag. According to the package you’ll get a 30-foot range. Looks sweet. What do you think? Are you good with your old mouse, or will you be rocking the Arc?

The $60 mouse folds down to half its size for easy portability thanks to what the packaging calls a "strong metal hinge," and the glossy veneer, to quote Blam, is indeed "flip and drool" worthy.

According to Alex, the tiny USB dongle attaches to the underbelly of the Arc when not in use via a magnet, and there's a storage bag for travel purposes. The packaging quotes a 30-foot range, and jumping is non-existent, says our tipster. Thanks, Alex!

The mystery was solved today, as BitStream discovered the massive HDTV will set you back $7,000 when it ships later this month. There's still no pricing info for the 73-inch LaserVue, which was also revealed in June. The 7k figure is comparable to what manufacturers are asking for similarly sized HDTVs in the space, but this one has frickin' laser beams. And unlike military lasers, these create a feast for your eyes, instead of your stomach.

We've been kind of laser crazy here at Gizmodo lately, and with good reason: Deployable solid state lasers could be landing in military hands as early as 2009. We simply wish to be at the forefront of the pew pew revolution, with the hope that any burning sensation our writers feel in the near future is the result of an unforgettable night out, not a disgruntled weapons grade laser system operator. But that last little diatribe brings up a good point, specifically in regards to what, exactly, laser warfare is going to look like. Sci-fi tends to glamorize laser weapons (pew pew, you're dead), when in reality the experts say getting "shot" with will probably feel more like napalm (*sizzle sizzle*, protracted death).

Wired's Danger room notes that the U.S. Air Force has effectively shifted away from the instant death scenario as of late, and focuses instead on how long it will take to cook a human with a laser (allegedly, everything is still top secret).

[F]rom what we know, the Air Force considers laser effects on eyes and skin, for the most part. Skin damage is very much easier to achieve than penetration; simply raising skin temperature to (say) 80C/ 180 f to a depth of a couple of millimeters will cause serious blistering (second-third degree burns). If 40% of the body is burned in this way, then the target will be disabled and may die.

[...] So instead of "zap-and-you're-dead" in normal science fiction style, with a hundred kilowatt laser, it's more a matter of spraying the target all over to ensure they're done. The description of the ATL as a "long range blow torch" is probably quite accurate.

I suppose it's fitting that a new slogan for tomorrow's battlefields came from a Colonel: Original recipe, or extra crispy? [Danger Room]

Instead of using their $300 million on customer services/refunds for wrongly-installed Vistas on brand new laptops/PCs, Microsoft is trying to copy Apple Genius strategy by having 155 Microsoft Vista...

Instead of using their $300 million on customer services/refunds for wrongly-installed Vistas on brand new laptops/PCs, Microsoft is trying to copy Apple Genius strategy by having 155 Microsoft Vista experts roam around your local BestBuy and CircuitCity.

As someone who had a horrible experience at BestBuy trying to return a digital camera, (which BestBuy didn’t let me return it for whatever reason so I now have TWO identical digital cameras) I will be officially boycotting BestBuy and CircuitCity stores for the duration of this Microsoft stint.

Even without Microsoft, I have a hard time getting around the retail stores without sales people annoying me with their “Can I help you find anything” questions.

Call me bitter but Microsoft deserves it after I bought a new HP desktop PC last year and of course it came with a Vista that wouldn’t work with any of my printers, mouse, pretty much all my USB devices.

Now, Microsoft should be paying me at least $25/hour during the time I formatted my PC using a special Linux Boot CD (because harddrive gets junked when you install Vista, you need to partition it and get rid of the root Vista thingee) and installed a fresh copy of Windows XP, which took me a total of 5 hours.

Now that’s $25 x 5 = $125 + Cost of Vista = about $500.

There, what Microsoft needed to do in order to survive and turn people like me into fans is about $500 for all my troubles and $500 for every PC/laptop I buy that come with Vista.

My next operating system will definitely hang around Ubuntu or another Linux system, but definitely Microsoft needs to realize for the good of human kind that their new Vista sucks so much even with their new $300 million marketing. (Marketing...not product features or upgrades that Microsoft is spending money on)

Here’s to Bill Gates or whoever is in charge of Microsoft:

“Please stop re-selling consumers an outdated, poorly designed operating system. No matter what marketing tatics you employ, I will do my best to let everyone else know that Vista has not changed (Yes, your mojave marketing had a reverse effect on me) , it’s the worst operating system I have ever used in my life. We are smarter than you think. Just having a new Vista Period. (and there’s goes my middle finger too.)”

Interesting facts:

There’s 525,000 search results about “Vista Sucks” on Google today. (Probably more as we go on)

In 1985, RDI Video Systems released the Halcyon, a home video game console with a built-in laser disc player. Besides that, its main claim to fame was its patented voice recognition system, where all input would be handled by speaking into an attached microphone.

"Innovative", but only two video games were released before RDI went belly-up. And as this early demonstration shows, its easy to understand why: the average user had to eye-roll their way through three or four minutes worth of labored, electronically monotone pillow talk before the Halcyon would even let you play a damn game.

I love this clip. From the stuttery, uncomfortable RDI Spokesman's insistence that the Halcyon is just like 2001's HAL-9000 (a computer system mostly known for licking an extraterrestrial Monolith and going on a mass-murder rampage) to the shimmer of grease on all the veteran broadcast men, it's a masterpiece of unintentional humor. You could slap it up on BBC's Look Around You site completely unchanged and everyone would assume it was a masterful parody.

Every time you pine for the retro-future of decades past, keep in mind this little exchange, as The Computer Chronicles host tries to get the Halcyon to accept his voice command.

Broadcaster: Sorry, HAL.

HAL: HUH?

Broadcaster: One.

HAL: WUT?

Broadcaster (emphatically): ONE.

HAL: SPEAK CON-SIS-TENT-LY, STU-ART.

This is the future we all were promised!

It can be seen as an upgrade to the MX Revolution, which was probably the “king” of wireless mice, but had been on the market for over a year without any updates. The MX 1100 is a bit larger than an average mouse, but it’s ergonomic and versatile with many features that will not disappoint.

The Specifications:

Connectivity: 2.4 GHz wireless (USB Adapter)

Power: Two AA Batteries

Sensor: 848nm Adjustable-dpi laser

Special: DPI Controls & Stealth Thumb Button

The Buttons: - 5/5 stars
The best part of the MX 1100 is the large amount of buttons it features without becoming overwhelming for those who don’t plan on using anything past the essential ones. The mouse is a bit larger than an average sized mouse, but is quite comfortable to use and both the left & right click buttons provide great tactile feedback. A button below the scroll wheel allows switching between a “notched scroll” and a “frictionless scroll”. The standard “notches” setting lets you feel each bump while scrolling, whereas the “frictionless” setting allows flicking through pages rapidly. The scroll wheel supports 4-way scrolling, so leaning it to either side will allow scrolling in that direction. Pushing in the scroll wheel functions as a middle-click, which is great for opening links in new tabs. A plus and minus button at the top left of the mouse allows increasing or decreasing the DPI settings to adjust sensitivity. It’s quite neat to be able to change the sensitivity at anytime without having to dig through the Control Panel. Directly above the thumb rest are the forward and backward keys. Although well placed, they were a bit too soft to offer enough feedback in my opinion. The final neat feature is the “stealth thumb button”, located in the thumb rest, which has been configured by default to launch Vista’s 3D flip interface to switch between open windows. And as always, installing Logitech’s SetPoint drivers and software will allow customizing any button to do just about anything you would like it to do.

Accuracy and Transmission: - 5/5 stars
Despite being a wireless mouse, the device maintained a strong connection with the transmitter. There were no problems getting it to work from even over 20 feet away. The MX 1100 is also quite accurate, movements are almost flawless and the adjustable DPI doesn’t disappoint. Hard-core gamers will probably still complain about accuracy, but for most consumers this will end up being the most accurate mouse they have used. That doesn’t mean its bad for gaming, it was better than any of the mice I had and was excellent to use while playing a game of Counter-Strike.

Battery and Charging - 3/5
The way the mouse gets it’s juice is probably the only drawback. The Mouse runs of two AA batteries and Logitech claims it will last about nine months. The mouse automatically goes into a power-save mode, however Logitech still says by using the “on/off button, you save even more power.” There is a battery indicator on the mouse that lights up when turned on, but fades away after a couple of seconds. A re-chargeable version of this mouse is available, however it can only be purchased as a part of a Cordless Desktop Wave Pro keyboard-mouse bundle. Unfortunately we can’t test the mouse for nine-months, but from experience I can say that the lifespan could be much shorter or longer based of how many hours it gets used each day.

Conclusion:
Overall, the Logitech MX 1100 is a top-of-the-line mouse and is probably one of the best ones I have used to date. It is extremely comfortable, completely customizable, and just works. If you do happen to be a “lefty” (left-handed), you are out of luck. It would be quite difficult to use this mouse comfortably with a left hand. For a retail price of $79.99, while being available for as low as $65 online, it’s affordable and offers just about everything you could ask for. I only wish it was rechargeable, but despite that most owners will be truly satisfied by what Logitech’s MX 1100 has to offer.
