ESPOO, Finland, -- Nokia took home a Mobile Marketing Association Award for its innovative work on a mobile advertising campaign for Unilever's Seda Teens Shampoo in Brazil. The initial goal of handsets sold for this product launch was met after only one month, prompting four increases in volume to meet retailer demand, still selling out after only two months.

The campaign, which won an award in the Branding Category for Latin America, drew consumers in with a branded mobile device, downloads, a game, a social networking site, and ads that ran on the Nokia Media Network. The Nokia Media Network is a premium, handset-agnostic mobile advertising network comprised of top-tier global publishers, operator partners and Nokia services such as Nokia.mobi.

"We were excited to take part in this new marketing initiative, allowing us to reach the consumers we want on the device they want," said Paula Lopes, marketing manager for Unilever. "This campaign shows how innovative both Nokia and Unilever are when it comes to reaching consumers."

Nokia and F.biz, Unilever's mobile agency, developed the mobile advertising campaign including:

-- A customized device -- the Nokia 5200 Pink packaging came with a Seda Teens-branded sleeve, phone jewelry and a folder presenting the Seda Teens offer;

-- Customized software preloaded with Seda Teens advertisements in the opening and closing screens, four Seda Teens 'themes,' a Seda-branded game and MP3s from a popular Brazilian band;

-- Bookmarks preloaded to the device, pointing to a Seda Teens game named "Dancing Star;"

-- A branded social networking site, accessible on both mobile and the traditional web, that allowed users to browse beauty and health tips, horoscopes and an area called "Experts," where they could submit questions on life; and

-- Banner ads that ran on the Nokia Media Network and decks of all major Brazilian mobile operators, leading to a download page for the game and the community site.

In addition to selling out inventory four times, the campaign generated twice the number of visits to the mobile site than the traditional website and more than 11,000 game downloads. The mobile website averaged a 10 percent click-through rate.

Nokia Interactive Advertising helps brands reach the potential global audience of 3.3 billion consumers with mobile devices. Through the Nokia Media Network and Nokia Interactive Solutions, Nokia Interactive Advertising provides brands with all they need to connect with and engage consumers with mobile advertising.

About Nokia

Nokia is the world leader in mobility, driving the transformation and growth of the converging Internet and communications industries. We make a wide range of mobile devices with services and software that enable people to experience music, navigation, video, television, imaging, games, business mobility and more. Developing and growing our offering of consumer Internet services, as well as our enterprise solutions and software, is a key area of focus. We also provide equipment, solutions and services for communications networks through Nokia Siemens Networks.

A change in operator attitudes towards mobile gambling, user interface improvements and the gradual introduction of legislation permitting remote gambling in selected markets are among the key factors...

A change in operator attitudes towards mobile gambling, user interface improvements and the gradual introduction of legislation permitting remote gambling in selected markets are among the key factors which are expected to push total annual mobile wagers to more than $27.5 billion by 2013, according to a new report from Juniper Research.

However, Juniper argues that, while EU intervention was having some impact on the liberalisation of Europe’s gambling markets, little progress had been made in the US market, where remote gambling services are still prohibited and will likely stay so until 2010 at the earliest.

The research company also found that mobile sports betting will comprise the majority of annual wagers over the next five years. On the other hand, mobile lottery services will also grow as they are being increasingly deployed in key Latin American and Asian markets, and will attain the highest adoption level of nearly 400 million users worldwide by the end of 2013.

Other findings from the report include:

Global gross win from mobile gambling services will rise from just under $192 million in 2008 to $3.4 billion by 2013.

In terms of total wager, Western Europe will remain the largest regional mobile gambling market throughout the forecast period, but the relative contribution of the UK will decline significantly with the deployment of more services in continental Europe.

Gambling service providers should deploy text-based gambling services in developing markets to encourage mass adoption.

More information about Juniper’s report “Mobile Gambling: Casinos, Lotteries and Betting 2008-2013 (Fifth Edition)” is available from their website.

Forms GSMA partnership to drive development of embedded mobile connectivity

[2008 GSMA Mobile Asia Congress, Macau – 19 November 2008] Huawei Technologies Co Ltd. ("Huawei"), a leader in providing next generation telecommunications network solutions worldwide, has announced that to date it has shipped over 20 million mobile broadband units to over 115 countries covering Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, North America, Middle East and Africa. Having worked closely with more than 230 international operators, Huawei' s mobile broadband is the preferred choice for operators around the world.

The growth in mobile broadband products including data card, dongles and embedded modems has far exceeded the forecast of the industry in 2006 and 2007 for two consecutive years. Over the next three years, industry analysts expect the mobile broadband market to grow at an amazing Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 46%, with annual shipments reaching 100 million by 2011.

"Huawei has emerged as the gold standard in partnering with operators for mobile broadband devices. Its proven ability to focus on operators' needs, to provide differentiated customization, including award-winning industrial designs, and to deliver robust applications suites has been recognized by operators globally," said Edward Chen, CEO of Huawei Communication Technologies. "Huawei' s robust R&D systems and processes are engineered to ensure a fast response to meet operators' terminal customization requirements. This has helped it achieve a commanding position in mobile broadband products. As the market leader, Huawei is firmly committed in its efforts to driving worldwide broadband penetration and the fast evolution of this technology."

Huawei also revealed today a partnership with GSMA, the global trade body for the mobile industry. The two have joined forces to help the mobile industry realize the huge potential market for consumer and industrial goods that can connect to 3G mobile networks. The cooperation will initially focus on bringing the benefits of continuous mobile connectivity to consumer electronics. Devices with embedded mobile connections can automatically exchange images, information and other data with mobile phones, computers or the Internet.
RIM’s long-overdue BlackBerry 8350i has been locked into Sprint’s Nextel iDEN network, but we haven’t heard about many other international releases aside from Latin America. Well, word has is Telus’ push-to-talk service, Mike, will also be hosting the new BlackBerry Curve in the near future. No word on release date, but they say that this Curve will be a little more ruggedized than the average Curve, which is key for the industrial environments where PTT is most used, and especially necessary when the old Curve devices aren’t exactly the toughest phones on the block. In addition to the usual web browsing, e-mail and music capabilities that all the latest BlackBerrys enjoy, the 8350i will also be packing Wi-Fi and GPS - both handy features no matter what sector you work in.

The Dell Vostro A860 we've heard so much about has finally hit the Stateside scene, and it looks like we'll finally be able to get our hands on the laptop that those lucky folk in the "emerging markets" of Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America have been into since before it was cool (that is, late August). Starting at $379 with Dell's instant savings, the 15.6-inch, 5.4 pound laptop comes with either a Celeron or Pentium Dual Core processor, GMA X3100+ integrated graphics, up to 2GB of memory, up to 160GB storage, 1366 x 768 display resolution, WiFi and optional Bluetooth. This "speed demon" comes preloaded with Vista Home Basic or Vista Business and is available now at Dell's website.

[Via Laptoping]
