Sony’s alphabet soup method of naming products continues with the pending launch of the XR1, W1, ZX1 and X1 series of LCD TVs with a total of 8 models.

The top of the line is the 55-inch KDL-55XR1. The 55XR1 has 1000000:1 contrast, Triluminos RGB LED backlighting for 122% NTSC in 1080p. Image massaging, er processing, is via Bravia Engine 2 Pro, Motionflow PRO 120Hz and DRC-MFv3, all working together to reduce noise, improve contrast, produce more & better colors, smooth motion and unconvert to 1080p where necessary. 750,000 Yen.

Sony sez the XR1 has “the highest picture quality in the history of Bravia” … remains 2b seen.

Take a look at the offerings from Ikea and you’ll know what I mean - practical, space saving and easy on the eye. The Under Cabinet TV With DVD Player is surely a subscriber to that mantra.

Mounted under a cabinet in a kitchen or office, this compact media center lets you enjoy TV programs, DVD movies, music CDs, and AM/FM radio without creating countertop clutter. The 9″ diagonal screen flips down and can be swiveled 270 to achieve the preferred viewing angle; its 16:9 aspect ratio makes it ideal for watching movies. Its TFT active matrix LCD (the same as those used in flat panel televisions) produces sharp, detailed images with rich color in widescreen or standard 4:3 formats. It has a digital/analog television tuner, receives 135 cable channels, and it can be used as a stereo system, playing CDs as well as tuning in AM/FM radio stations. Plugs into AC and mounts easily with included hardware. Remote uses two AAA batteries (included) and has a magnet for attaching to a refrigerator.

Hammacher is currently making the Under Cabinet TV With DVD Player available for $299.95.

Okay, so maybe those all-in-one PCs have their positives, but seriously, who really looks forward to paying good money for something that's so impossible to upgrade? Tim Schellekens sure doesn't, and rather than biting the bullet, he chose to snap up one of VIA's EPIA motherboards, an old school 15-inch LCD and a bit of fiberglass. The four pages waiting for you in the read link detail the transformation, and while we personally wouldn't have gone to such extremes (buying two monitors to get one?) just to craft our own web surfing desktop, we definitely admire the dedication. Behold, i-EPIA.

[Thanks, Ewan]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Epson has lifted the curtain on three new LCD projectors at the CEDIA expo that support 1080p resolution for all your high definition needs. The three projectors would be the PowerLite Home Cinema 6100, PowerLite Pro Cinema 7100 and Pro Cinema 7500 UB. The flagship Pro Cinema 7500 UB is Epson’s pride and joy, featuring the following :-

75,000:1 dynamic contrast ratioC2Fine software and FineFrame technology12-bit 3LCD driver 2.35 or 2.4 aspect ratio viewing

The remaining two projectors are less capable, although that doesn’t mean they aren’t good enough for the average home. The Pro Cinema 7100 comes with a 18,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, 1,800 lumens of brightness and a Day and Night mode. As for the PowerLite Home Cinema 6100, that model boasts a 18,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, a Dynamic Iris system and a 200W lamp. All three models will feature a trio of HDMI 1.3a inputs, S-Video, composite and VGA connectivity. You can pick up the PowerLite Home Cinema 6100, Pro Cinema 7100 and 7500 UB for $1,999, $3,000 and $4,500, respectively.

For the most part, Runco stays pretty quiet in the consumer realm... until CEDIA rolls around. Once again, the high-end AV company is firing on all cylinders in Denver, announcing seven new 1080p LCD / plasma displays including its largest LCD to date, the 70-inch Crystal Series CX-70DHD (pictured). Along with the new panels, the outfit is unveiling its exclusive OPAL (Optical Path Alignment) technology on select models which "delivers extreme glare reduction and enhanced contrast for high ambient light environments." The aforesaid 70-incher (shipping mid-October for $34,995) actually comes bundled with an external DHD video controller / processor, which incorporates Runco's Vivix II tech to "enhance all digital and NTSC content to near high-definition quality." We'll admit, that sounds an awful lot like something Toshiba's got going on just a few booths over, but make of it what you will. For details on the other half dozen sets, hop on past the break.
Continue reading Runco lets it all hang out, intros seven new 1080p LCDs / plasmas at CEDIA

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Of course you do—and the best part is that you get to put your nerd knowledge to the test in the process. All you need to do is take the "history of television" quiz after the break and send it in to us. The winner will be selected randomly from the submissions with the most correct answers.

Here are your questions:

1. What was the call signal for the first broadcast television station in the United States?

2. Television was first broadcast in the 30-300 MHz range, as well as the 300-3,000 MHz range. What are the common names for these frequencies?

3. What year did color TV sales overcome black and white TV sales?

4. In January 2007, Sharp unveiled the largest LCD television at the time. How big was it?

5. WABC, the call sign for ABC's flagship station, was briefly owned by another national broadcaster until 1946. Which broadcaster owned that call sign?

6. What is the longest continuous running TV series in the world?

7. In 1884, the first patent for a television device was registered. Who registered it, and where was he from?

8. Name the group of universities and companies created in 1993 to spearhead the American HDTV specifications.

9. Who published the work "Liquid Crystals" in 1904 and is considered the father of LCD technology?

10. What year did LCD TV sales surpass CRT TV sales?

11. Which company introduced the first wall mounted LCD TV?

Once you have completed the quiz, send it (all in one email) to contests@gizmodo.com with the subject "Aquos TV Contest." Again, a Sharp 37" Aquos TV will be awarded to a randomly selected contestant with the most correct answers. Good luck!

Sponsored by Sharp AQUOS. Change your TV. Change your Life.

LG Electronics announced that it would launch the LG-KC910, the only 8 megapixel multimedia phone with a full touchscreen interface.

The LG-KC910 boasts top-of-the-range camera capabilities and the latest multimedia features, all combined with a 3.0 inch full touchscreen.

The LG-KC910 is the perfect successor to the multi-million selling camera phone, LG Viewty. Like its predecessor, which debuted as the slimmest 5 megapixel phone, the LG-KC910 will be the slimmest 8 megapixel handset on the market at just 13.95 mm when released.

This phone combines the latest multimedia features and an intuitive user interface evolved far beyond what Viewty offered.

With this phone LG has created a multi-sensorial experience like no other, providing enhanced viewing enjoyment, superior sound and better use of touch.

The LG-KC910 leads the industry with its 8 megapixel camera, which is being developed to include Schneider-Kreuznach certified optics, a xenon flash and ISO sensitivity up to 1600. Further strengthening the phone’s camera features are image stabilization, auto-focus, manual focus, Face Tracking, Smile Shot and blink detection. An embedded GPS receiver gives the LG-KC910 the ability to geo-tag photos for later plotting on an interactive map. A variety of creative shot modes, so far only found on standalone digital cameras, will be included.

The handset’s perfect repertoire of high-end multimedia features provides the ultimate multi- sensorial experience. The LG-KC910 is the first handset for the global market to include Dolby Mobile, an integrated suite of audio processing technologies which brings depth and richness as well as clean, powerful bass to the music listening experience.
Video features are just as advanced as audio features. The LG-KC910 can record video from 5fps up to 120fps, which allows it to record in both fast and slow motion. The phone also plays DivX and Xvid movies straight out of the box, without the need for additional encoding.

A 3.0-inch WQVGA full touch LCD screen is the ideal canvas for experiencing and interacting with the LG-KC910’s multimedia features. A customizable interface, with numerous widgets and shortcuts, makes the phone’s myriad features even easier to use.

Rounding out the phone’s comprehensive feature set, are A-GPS enabled navigation, compatibility with the latest 3G HSDPA networks for connections up to 7.2Mbps and Wi-Fi for even faster internet access. The phone also includes a Jogging Buddy program that uses GPS technology to help track workouts, a feature sure to please exercise enthusiasts.
The KC910 will be available for purchase beginning in October. LG will release additional technical specifications and information on the LG-KC910, including details on its comprehensive capabilities and pet name.
